Cleaning the Moon

The Moon has been a source of inspiration for artists, mythologists, scientists,

theologians, futurists, businessmen, and politicians sincethe beginning of time.

Entire gods and goddesses have made the Moon their domain. Whole calendars

have been based on the lunar cycle. Earth has only one moon, so of course it

would receive a superlative level of consideration. Talk of colonies on the Moon

crystallized in the twentieth century, and became a popular subject for science

fiction. Some people even began to speculate on selling property on theMoon.

Really, since the wealthy people on Earth will probably be the first people to go

into space, anyone in real estate has the potential for success when it comes

to the Moon. Today, the current international consensus is that the Moon is for

everyone, and no real estate tycoon has gotten his or her hands on it.

Back in the mid-twentieth century, we finally fulfilled a long-standing dream of

visiting our Moon after millennia of it being just out of reach of our wildest

imaginings. One observation that immediately came to mind, upon

seeing the Moon’s surface, is that it was very dusty. It was enough to inspire yet

another round of questioning, as the results of the Space Race came to the front.

Specifically, people may well have begun to speculate whether the Moon ought to

be cleaned. Surely that level of dirt was not acceptable for any celestial body.

For some time, it seemed that colonies on the Moon looked more likely to happen

than not. In which case, commercial cleaning and pressure washing services

would be following shortly. At that point, developers everywhere could

give the Moon the cleaning it so obviously needed. Part of Terra-forming should

really involve remaking the Moon to fit our own design specifications.

Landscapers everywhere could find exciting new work finding a way to render a

pleasing pictorial view out of the Moon. In arid climates like Arizona, people have

found ways to make exciting, lovely lawns using gravel. Perhaps they could bring

their techniques to the Moon, and create a wonderful suburban landscape

among the stars.

Sadly, the situation with the Moon has only gotten worse with time. Space trash

has reached epidemic levels, and the Moon is no exception. Space, once a vacant,

majestic, final frontier, is quickly becoming a graveyard for old satellites and

rockets. Really, it seems appropriate, given that similar things have happened to

most other frontiers humanity has crossed. This goes well beyond the majestic

American flags and Soviet Union pennants that marked both nations’ passages

to the Moon, or the boot prints the intrepid astronauts left upon lunar soil. There

is nothing symbolic about all of this space debris, or at least, not the sort of

symbolism we would want any potential extraterrestrial aliens to see. There are

now over one hundred seventy thousand kilograms of artificiality on the Moon as

we speak. TheMoon has become both unspeakably, naturally dusty and cluttered,

like the universe’s messiest house.

Perhaps cleaning the Moon is the job of NASA. However, assaults on NASA’s

budget continue on and on, and perhaps it is time for private

commercial cleaning companies to step in and make history. They can

give the moon the cleaning it so desperately needs and deserves. Humanity must

find a way to address its problems with outer space pollution now, or the entire

solar system may one day be filled with just as much space debris. We may well

feel nostalgic for the days when all we had to worry about was a dusty moon.
