EPA proposed lowering standards for annual average soot (particles >2.5 microns) from 15 micrograms/cubic meter to 12. American Lung Association pushing for 11.

EPA estimates the change would reduce U.S. health care costs by $5.9 billion in 2020.

Decision was made in December 2012 for 12 and includes lowering allowable ozone from 75 to 60 parts per billion.

IAQ & Health Facts • 30% of U.S. air pollution is imported – Harvard

University 2005.

• 500,000 people; 100 cities; 16 year study. For every 10 microgram increase in fine particles = 8% increase in lung cancer & 6% increase in heart attack deaths – American Cancer Society 2006.

• 59,000 women; 36 cities; 6 years. For particles <2.5 microns in most polluted cities = 150% increase in deaths from heart attacks & strokes – New England Journal of Medicine 2007.

• Fine particle pollutants trigger an increase in the number & size of fat cells & increase blood sugar levels – Ohio State University 2011.

According to the American Heart Association, more than

400 studies correlate heart diseases to particulate matter exposure whether due to short-term or long-term exposure.

IAQ Is A Self-Insured Risk! Mold claims have already cost insurance companies billions – as a result, commercial and residential policies now have exclusion language.

A pollution exclusion clause was added to post-1986 insurance policies leaving owners self-insured for IAQ related claims.

Health Care Costs

Carnegie Mellon & Harvard School of Public Health estimated (in 1997) annual health care cost per employee would be reduced $140 with improved IAQ ($36 billion in savings).

That is $585 per person in 2013 dollars based on 10% escalation per year.

Schools Schools have 4 times as many people per area of floor space as an office building.

Also contributing to IAQ are locker rooms, dark rooms, labs, art rooms & diesel school bus exhaust.

Children are more vulnerable to the effects of pollution, especially fine particles.

Multiple studies link student performance to IAQ including 12-14% higher scores on standard tests (EPA, CDC, Journal of School Health, etc.).
