SURVIVAL GUIDE
Dear ESNers,
It is a great pleasure for ESN Coimbra to host the Portuguese Council of Local Delegates 2015
and to welcome you to our city, a city known for being the student’s city.
After another year working and building a team and a family that we are proud to call ESN
Coimbra we decided to embrace a new challenge and host this event. A year that is fulfilling our
expectations as we keep being rewarded for our hard work. A year where our effort and our
passion were our main motivations. A year that unfortunately is already now coming to an end.
We accepted this opportunity with a mix of enthusiasm and conscience of responsibility. After
organizing the ESNOlympics we hope to be up to the challenge of organizing a National event
once again. But most of all we want to make sure that every ESNer feels comfortable and part
of Coimbra while they are staying here.
We are looking forward to seeing you and to make to help you with anything you need during
your stay.
Thank you,
WELCOME BY ESN COIMBRA

Coimbra, known as the “Students’ City”, is located in the centre of Portugal with around 150.000
inhabitants where around 20.000 of them are students. The city has good transport facilities
which provide easy access to airports and beaches, such as Figueira da Foz and Tocha.
The city has an extraordinary History as well as several important archaeological remains,
fado and other important stories such as Pedro and Inês’ forbidden love affair. With an exciting
nightlife, the daily life is marked by students with or without their so-called “Harry Potter capes”,
coming and going back from their lectures, stopping on the way to chat with friends, gossiping
and discussing University issues in some of the Praça da República or Sé Velha pubs.
The Historical Centre of Coimbra is divided into two main areas, where your hostels are located:
Alta upper town is the eldest part which consists of steep narrow cobbled streets,
where the Repúblicas (typical communal student residences) are to be found, as well as some
of the city’s most important monuments: Sé Velha, Sé Nova and the University of Coimbra.
Baixa lower town where most of the city’s traditional commercial activity is concentrated.
It is well known by its small and labyrinthic streets with old houses. By the Mondego River, the
Monastery of Santa Cruz and several medieval churches can easily be found.
The city has grown to other residential areas, such as Celas, Vale das Flores and Solum.
COIMBRA, THE STUDENTS’ CITY

University of Coimbra and Paço das Escolas
Founded in 1290, it holds Biblioteca Joanina, the famous University library which is richly decorated with
exotic wood in green, red and gold. The library now operates as a museum with an amazing collection
of about 300,000 volumes. It was recently recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.
Botanical Garden Jardim Botânico
Created by the Marquis of Pombal, Botanical Garden is generally regarded as one of the most beautiful
botanical gardens in Portugal, covering an area of up to 13 acres.
Machado de Castro Museum
It is one of the most important art museums in Portugal, containing Roman material from excavations,
medieval sarcophaguses, Romanesque and Gothic sculpture in stone and wood, goldsmith’s work,
furniture, tapestries, porcelain and painting
Sé Velha Coimbra Old Cathedral
The Cathedral dates back from the reign of King Afonso Henriques and is built on Romanesque style,
which was popular at that period in Coimbra. It is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in
Portugal.
Mosteiro de Santa Clara a Velha
Located on the left bank of Mondego River, it is another beautiful representation of the Romanesque.
It was built as a convent for nuns which were not allowed to speak, and was house of the city’s
patroness Rainha Santa Isabel on her last years. Because of the monastery being built on a lower level
than the rivers’ it has been underwater for a large number of years, but after another large years of
research and water pumping and restoration work it has become what you can see nowadays.
