LITERACY ALLIANCE – COLUMBUS/MUSCOGEE

For a 3rd year, the city has recognized the connection between literacy and crime and the CLCP has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Columbus Office of Crime Prevention.

The afternoon Adult Basic Education class sponsored by the Alliance will soon relocate to a local agency in order to reach more students.

“Kindergarten Readiness” volunteers continue working one on one with pre-k students. A “spin off” of this program called “Reading is RAD” (Reading for A Difference) has high school students using the curriculum, with some adjustments, with children in daycare and pre-k children in groups. In a pilot of this program, the children in RAD outperformed the children in Kindergarten Readiness.

On October 10th Georgia’s First Lady and children’s author, Mrs. Sandra Deal visited 2 schools, attended a luncheon with the Literacy Alliance and visited a local daycare. The CLCP has programs at all of the locations visited.

On November 4th the city council will proclaim November “Vocabulary Month in Columbus” for the 3rd year in a row. Barbara Moushon Executive Director

SUMTER COUNTY LEAP

To celebrate Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, LEAP (Learning for Everyone, Inc.) asked Adult Education students at the Stein Center and at the South Georgia Technical College McClain Center to write personal stories on what earning a GED diploma has meant. The 41 stories will be sent to state legislators as part of the GALA (Georgia Adult Literacy Advocates) Letter Writing Campaign to create awareness of the need for strong adult education programs across the state.

A student at the McClain Center wrote the following: “I joined the Adult Education Program because I am trying to better myself for me and my children. My personal experience in this program is going good and according to my plan of ‘sticking it out’. PEACH COUNTY LEAP L.E.A.P. (Literacy Education for Adults in Peach)

continues to fulfill their CLCP mission and take advantage of opportunities to partner with community organizations. In July, City Administrator Martha McAfee and Deana Moore with I Think I Am Foundation extended a challenge to Fort Valley organizations to bring school supplies to Festival Park and help distribute them to children.

L-R sitting: Ann Jefferson, Odessa McNair (L.E.A.P. Board

Members) L-R standing: Elena Gelter (CGTC Instructor), Desmond Jones (GED

Student), Mildred Lindsey (L.E.A.P. Director)

Over 18 organizations and 450 children signed up for the event and everyone went home equipped with needed school supplies. L.E.A.P. and Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) conducted registration as well.

In recognition of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in September, Peach County Family Connection invited L.E.A.P. and CGTC to present on literacy. Participating in the meeting were representatives from Central Baha'i Community, Fort Valley Community Gardens, Well Care Health Plans, Vic-Ki Foundation, Inc., Amerigroup, Congressman Sanford Bishop, Fort Valley Housing Authority, On the Path Children & Family Services, Fort Valley State University, MGCAA, Blue Heron Lake Nature Conservancy, Peach County Board of Education and Peach Neighborhood Service Center.

Several in attendance accepted the L.E.A.P. challenge to distribute flyers at their workplaces and will make an effort to refer at least 2 people to an Adult Education class.

The CLCP decided to send a message to everyone entering each corridor of Fort Valley and a reminder to residents. Colorful road signs carrying the message Don’t Settle for Minimum Wage, L.E.A.P. For A

Better Career! along with contact information are now posted at the city limits of all roads leading into the city. L.E.A.P. conducted a poster contest and Adult Education students created posters which resulted in the new signs. Blue Bird Corporation assisted with funding for the signs.

PICKENS COUNTY CLCP On July 24th, the Chattahoochee Technical

College Appalachian Campus library hosted a poetry reading, Visions of Verse. The featured poet, Charles Clifford Brooks, III, enthralled listeners with new poetry as well as from “The Draw of Broken Eyes and Whirling Metaphysics,” which garnered him a Pulitzer Prize nomination, among others.

Before reading, he talked with students about

poetry and how similar it is to music, citing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” “Though the words are written in German,” he said, “it makes us feel something… without ever knowing how to speak the language. That’s what poetry does—it makes us feel… makes us connect with others… and reminds us we’re not alone.” In addition to writing, Mr. Brooks teaches part-time in Adult Education, where he constantly urges his students to write. His teaching position is funded by the Pickens CLCP. Students presented at the event, sharing in the beauty of the written word. An additional reading was held September 25th. Amy Denney Board Member

BIBB COUNTY DREAM TEAM

In honor of Bibb County’s CLCP, the DREAM Team, CLCP Board Member Horace Holmes, Jr., spoke to the Buck Melton Adult Education classroom during Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. Laverne Stubbs and Phyllis Dorn co-teach the class. Mr. Holmes spoke to the students about persisting in their studies and overcoming obstacles. He shared with them his lifelong struggle with dyslexia and that it was not until he was 55 years old that he learned to read phonetically. He also shared with them the importance of punctuality and what that truly means: getting places early and coming prepared to do whatever it takes to be successful.
