I Come BrokenI Come Broken

A few weeks ago we introduced a new song on Sunday morning that is an update to the wonderful classic hymn Just as I Am. For those who were

there that morning, you may remember that I mentioned that every time we practiced the song I choked up. I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little more on why that is the case.  During the interview with the church for the Worship Pastor position around 11 months ago, I said that the most important thing to Becky and me is not whether we are doing hymns or modern worship songs, but that what mattered most were the words of the songs we sing. That truly is what I care about and the words are what continually bring me to my knees during this song.   When I introduced the song I did a mild disservice by stating that it hearkens to our state when we came to the foot of the cross to give our lives to Christ. I wasn’t wrong, because it does reflect that beautifully, however, the more I look at it and listen to it and play it, the more I realize that it’s much more than that. It’s also about the state we return to constantly. The first part of the chorus says:

I come broken to be mended   I come wounded to be healed   I come desperate to be rescued   I come empty to be filled    I come guilty to be pardoned   By the blood of Christ the Lamb

I cannot count the times that I look at my life and see that I’m broken or wounded or desperate or empty. I can‐not count the times every day that I stop and see that I’m still guilty in need of pardon or forgiveness. Those re‐alizations are not something that make me excited. They are realizations that I have once again failed the God who sacrificed everything for me. And that breaks my heart. The good news is that it doesn’t end there. The fi‐nal part of the chorus and then the third verse of the song say:

And I’m welcomed with open arms Praise God, just as I am. Just as I am I would be lost, But mercy and grace my freedom bought. And now to glory in Your cross,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Those words break me like a tidal wave breaks on the shore. They are a precious promise, but they don’t hide my failure. They celebrate that while I fail, the mercy and grace that are only found in the one true God are enough to buy my freedom even while I’m still a mess. That’s what gets me as I sing those words. I stand there just as flawed and messed up as when I turned to Him the first time, but I stand forgiven and with a greater hope than I could ever deserve. And that realization is far too powerful for me to be able to stand unmoved. I am beyond thankful that He mends, heals, rescues, fills, and pardons. I’m blown away every time I realize that I’m welcomed with open arms just as I am. Praise God!                      In Christ Alone,                     Jamie

To our family at Claycomo Baptist Church,

I’m still trying not to think about saying goodbye, so this will be difficult.  I need to say thank you, though.  When we came to Claycomo Baptist, it almost seemed like we picked it “out of a hat” ran‐domly.  Due to the fact that Brendan was preaching at a rest home, we needed to find a church with a

service at 11 am within a certain area so that we could make it to worship after the rest home service was finished.  We visited Claycomo Baptist and were blessed by the variety of generations we saw.  We were welcomed warmly, and not just because we had children as had seemed the case so

many times before.☺  We weren’t able to attend Sunday School for our first year, due to the rest home ministry, but once we could, we were quickly given a place in the family.  That family has been so wonderful!  I want to thank so many of you for so many things . . .

Thank you for allowing us to minister alongside you.  Thank you for the opportunities to teach, make music, and help.  Thank you for the donations you’ve made to the seminary’s food pantry – they’ve benefited us as well as others.  Thank you, Someone in Particular, for the repeated gift of bacon – you know who you are!! ☺  Thank you for loving our children, for hugging them and encouraging them, for teaching them and blessing them.  Thank you for not making us feel judged for homeschooling our girls.  Thank you for all the times you’ve been willing to help them participate in the Children’s Minis‐try.  Thank you for hugs, for encouraging words, for odd loans like a pair of nail clippers before Sunday School or an awesome DVD that you knew we needed to watch.  Thank you, Anonymous Someone, for the financial gift you gave to us every month for more than a year – may God bless you as much as you blessed us!!  Thank you, Claycomo, for all the aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, you’ve given our family.  You’ve supported Brendan on a mission trip. You’ve bandaged a child’s knee when she would‐n’t let her mama.  You’ve urged a young lady out of her comfort zone, showing that she can be vulner‐able with those around her.  You’ve allowed me to teach and sing.  You’ve given us rides for rehearsals and events.  You’ve encouraged Brendan in his studies and allowed him the privilege of teaching.  God has used you in our lives in so many ways . . . thank you all!

So, as we leave, I want to encourage you to be the Body that Christ has pulled you together to be.   We want to pray for you (hoping that you will also be praying for us) Colossians 1:9‐14.  “ . . . asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.  And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, grow‐ing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great en‐durance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.  For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

May God bless you as you have blessed us!   Marie Kennedy (and family)

St. Louis and Back Again…A Pastor’s Tale This year’s SBC Annual Meeting was full of the exciting, the unex-pected, and the overwhelming.

One of the most exciting opportunities I have ever had, especially at an SBC meeting, was to nominate Jose Burgos for Second Vice President. I was introduced to him through a friend who is part of a group of guys with whom I have connected online at a blog known as SBC Voices (sbcvoices.com). Jose is a bi-vocational church planting pastor in Indiana. He was with our crew at the event this year. He has been a blessing to get to know and to highlight to our SBC family of churches. While he made it into a run-off, he was not elected to the position. Please join me in praying for him, his wife and family, and the continuing ministry of his church.

Another couple of exciting declarations were made by the messengers at this year’s meeting. We discussed and passed a number of resolutions re-garding various issues, two of which I believe to be quite significant. Through one we declared our conviction and encouragement to all our SBC churches to be on the frontlines in ministering to refugees who are in

our country having fled from areas of intense trouble around the world. Through these events, our Lord is bringing the nations to our doorsteps. We must be reaching out through our churches and our homes to connect with people, love them, and show them the love of God and share the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In the other we declared, in the words of past SBC President James Merritt who offered an important amendment to this resolution, that “All the Confederate Battle Flags in the world are not worth one soul of any race.” As we stood, with the voice of an obvious, overwhelming majority, to repudiate a symbol which so many in our country clearly identify as a symbol of hate and racism, I was ready to cheer. I know some may see this as inconsequential. I do not. In line with the heart of the Apostle Paul, I am glad we as the SBC have taken a stand to repudiate a symbol which is a stumbling block to the Gospel.

Something I can say I had never seen at any previous SBC meeting was our unexpected challenge in electing the next President for the convention. We started with three candidates, which pretty much in-sured a run-off. The second ballot voting for the two remaining candidates also failed to produce a win-ner—to win the election, a candidate must receive 50% + 1 of the votes. The second ballot had just enough errant votes (wrong ballot number or wrong number marked when voting), which must be counted when determining the percentages, to keep either candidate from getting the number. Both JD Greear, pastor from North Carolina, and Steve Gaines, pastor from Tennessee, then sought each other out and expressed their willingness to concede to the other. In the end, JD withdrew his name and nominated Dr. Gaines to be our next SBC President who then received the convention ballot vote. I know this is a lot of geeky convention meeting detail, but it was fun to watch…except the fact that it kept the three of us who were ready to nominate people to be 2nd VP in limbo overnight!

And then there is the overwhelming…and exciting…and somewhat unexpected occur-rence this year. The group of guys at SBC Voices began talking months ago about a way to impact the SBC and make a positive statement about the involvement of “average SBC church pastors” (read that as pastors of churches with attendance of 500 or fewer) in the convention meetings. We landed on a vision for next year’s Pastors Conference. We pub-lished our idea centering around a series of sermons focused on a single Bible book or passage (like 1 Peter or John 14-16) which would be preached by these “average pas-tors” who would also represent the vast array of cultures and types (established and church plants) and situations (full-time and bi-vocational) within the SBC. Well…we nomi-nated Dave Miller of Sioux City, Iowa…and he won!!! Yikes! I am honestly looking forward to working with this group of guys to help Dave make next year’s “experiment,” as we called it, work. Be praying for this group of pastors as we go through the process of planning and preparing for the Pastor’s Conference which will take place just prior to the annual meeting in Phoenix next year.

Thank you all for letting me share just a little bit of what I thought was important in what happened in the meeting in St. Louis this year. By Grace Alone,

I started a new devotion book and I wanted to share what God has already been working on in my heart.

Luke 10:38‐39 ‐‐ As Jesus and His disciples were on their way, He came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to Him. She had a sister called Mary who sat at the Lords feet listening to what He had to say.

Having a Mary heart in a Martha World‐‐the thought may intrigue you, but it sure captivated my attention. Deep inside of me there is a hunger, a calling, to know and love God passionately. As Chris‐tians, we should all have that but sometimes life gets in the way‐‐the busyness, excuses, etc....it has for me. I want to truly know Je‐sus and the fellowship of the Spirit. I don't want more head knowl‐edge, it’s the heart to heart intimacy that I am longing for.

They say that variety is the spice to life, my Grandma used to use this phrase. That is, perhaps, why God so often puts people of such

different personalities and gifts in the same family. Mary was the sunlight to Martha's thunder. Mary's bent was to meander through life, pausing to smell the roses. Martha's was more likely to pick the roses, quickly cut the stems just so and arrange them in a vase, with greens and other beautiful fillers.

That is not to point out that one is right and the other is wrong. We are all created differently and that is how our Creator intended for it to be. Each of us has been gifted with strengths and weak‐nesses.  Mary pressed as close to Jesus as possible to listen. Mary didn't care that this was not how it was done and didn't care that the disciples or her sister may have looked at her funny. All Mary could hear was the sound of her Master’s voice, the call to come and listen. She recognized and obeyed that call!! It didn't matter to her what others thought or said.

Do we press closer to our Master to where we can hear and recognize His voice? Or have you been like me and allowed other things to distract you from Him? Do you make it a priority to read and apply His word? Do you come to church not just on Sunday morning? Do you teach your kids to listen for what God may be asking them to do? Are you listening for what God may be asking you to do? How long has it been since you've heard His voice?

God has placed each of us in this body we call Claycomo Baptist Church to listen to Him first and then to uplift each other to do the same. We all come with different personalities, backgrounds, strengths, weaknesses and sometimes that can bring strife BUT, if we are pressing into Jesus and listening, His will will be done and it brings peace. I am not sure about you but I long for peace!  It truly is all about Him and has nothing to do with ME or you. I am learning this more and more this past few weeks and look forward to what else God is going to teach me. It's not easy to listen because that means we are giving control over to Him and allowing Him to correct and change us.

It's not always easy to sit and be quiet, but to truly hear, we must!

Rhonda Gordon CBC Children’s Director

Be a lifesaver ~ About 200 people — including 100 lifeguards — attended a pool party in New Or-leans in 1985 to celebrate the first summer in memory that no one had drowned at a city pool. At the end of the festivities, the four on-duty lifeguards began clearing the area and found a fully dressed man in the deep end. Despite efforts to revive him, he died.

Just as swimming with a bunch of lifeguards doesn’t guarantee safety, “swimming” with a sea of churchgo-ers doesn’t guarantee peace. People in the pews next to you might be struggling to stay above water physically, emotionally, financially or spiritually. Be alert to ways you can serve as a lifeguard. Extend a helping hand, a listening ear and an encouraging reminder of Jesus’ ultimate rescue (see Romans 7:24-25).

So this has been an exciting summer so far for the G‐412 youth group! We haven’t allowed the heat to slow us down one bit and we have remained very active.

In addition to our weekly G‐412 On‐the‐Move meetings, we have also had some very fun and suc‐cessful events. We kicked off the summer by heading out to WOF for the day and boy was it fun…world’s of fun!! We had a great turnout and I think everyone had a blast.  We also loaded up in the youth van last Wednesday and headed north to St. Joe to hook up with Jeff and Ashley’s and several other youth groups in that area for a block party/concert. This night was extremely successful and full of fun. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with some old friends and make new ones as well.  Inspired by the idea of connecting with other youth groups in the area, we partnered up with Nashua Baptist and Open door Baptist for a group skate night at the Liberty Skating rink. I’m not sure who had more fun, the adult leaders who went, or the kids, but I will tell you that everyone was tired and sore after 3 hours or skating…so once again a successful night.  Because of the success of these group events, we will be looking to continue to partner up with these churches and others over the course of the coming months and I am grate‐ful for the partnership that we have with our local churches. There are many more events planned for the summer, such as a car wash, water park, car show and of course youth camp which will be occurring in July. Stay tuned for more de‐tails and please remember to keep the youth and their lead‐ers in your prayers.  Thank you for all your prayers and support. ~ Youth Leadership Team  On a computer screen, images can be magnified to show tiny details and make text easier to read. In the process, how‐ever, the “big picture” is lost. After checking various aspects of a project closely, it’s a good idea to “zoom out” again to be sure everything still looks as it should.

Likewise, it’s easy to fixate on the tiny details of our lives (especially flaws in ourselves and others). We tend to enlarge our problems far beyond their actual size and totally miss problems taking a toll elsewhere. We may also forget the beautiful “big picture” of God’s care encompassing us. After tending to life’s details, it’s important to take a broader view to see whether our up‐close perceptions hold true when we gaze on the work as a whole.

“Help us ‘zoom out,’ oh God,” prays Joshua DuBois in The President’s Devotional (HarperOne). “Widen our perspective and extend our horizon, so that we can more fully know your purpose this day, and every day.”

CBC Senior Singles Meeting this month!

This month’s meeting is at noon on  July 21st

@ Pizza Ranch N. Oak & Vivion.

Car pool will leave the church @ 11:30 so if you need a ride, someone will more than likely have room for you!

Regular meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the month at 12:00 noon from February through October.

+Christian Symbol+ Eagle Eagles came to sym‐bolize the Resurrec‐tion thanks to an‐cient legends that they renewed their youth, plumage or eyesight by flying near the sun, then diving into water. The eagle's upward movement made it a symbol of Jesus' ascension. John the Evangelist is represented by an eagle, for his "soaring" descrip‐tion of Christ's di‐vinity. God's care is likened to an eagle in Bible verses such as Exodus 19:4: "I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you myself" (ESV).

God has brought an unexpected opportunity into Ashley's and my life to adopt another orphan from Bulgaria! Some friends passed us a profile for a boy for whom our hearts broke. Already six years old and born blind and with mild cerebral palsy, the agency is basically all but giving up hope anyone would take him home. He is very developmentally de‐layed from his life in orphanages and, at his age, the transition to a new language, culture, and home will be very hard, but he needs a family. By the grace of God and in the love of Christ, we are ready to be that family. Please pray for us, for him, and for Lexy. This will be a difficult process for us all, but I am certain it will be worth it in the end. If you have a little to spare, please consider helping us raise the funds we need to make this hap‐pen (using the link below). The ultimate sum is great, but every little bit helps a LOT! Thank you for your prayers and support.
