Random Thoughts Illustrated Random Thoughts Illustrated –– Worship Pastor EditionWorship Pastor Edition

When Becky and I were newly married I discovered something. There were times that she would start a conversation between us in her head and then halfway in, she would begin saying it out loud. I was completely at a loss for a while. When I would point it out to her, she would be incredulous for a minute, insisting she didn’t realize that she started it in her head, and then we would chuckle about it. I used to refer to it as “another edition of Random Thoughts Illustrated”. (We knew we had been married for a while when I actually started figuring out the conversation she was having with‐out me and I could jump right in, without having been present for the beginning). When I started writing a sports blog (for an audience of about 40), I titled it Random Thoughts Illustrated as a tip of the hat to Becky and also because there are frequent times where my style of writing is simply a col‐lection of random thoughts. I find myself in one of those moods today, so please bear with me as I share a variety of musings to ring in the New Year:

• We’ve just finished our second Christmas season at Clay‐como, leading the worship and choir, and I have to say that I love it. I’m so grateful to this church body for allow‐ing us to serve in a role that Becky and I are passionate about. Thank you.

• It seems like when I listen to a new music album there is always one song that gets listened to more than any other. Currently, there is a song on Disciple’s Long Live the Rebels album entitled “Erase” that I keep listening to. Especially as we approach the New Year, it’s such an en‐couragement to those looking for a fresh start. The words, written from the perspective of God, say:

When you say you're not ok, my heart it breaks to heal your pain. I will erase your yesterday. You'll be ok. My love is greater than this. Forget every regret, I'll make perfection from this mess. I will erase your yesterday. You'll be ok. My love is greater than your mistake.

The final line of that “my love is greater than your mistake” just gets me every time. How en‐couraging is it to know that there isn’t a mistake that can’t be covered by the love of Jesus through the blood of Jesus.

• The prevailing sentiment that I hear about 2016 is that people are ready for it to be over and they would prefer to burn it to the ground. There have definitely been a lot of horrible things

that have happened this year, a lot of beloved people have died, and un‐rest has been the order of the day in many arenas. However, it is impor‐tant that we don’t just look at it that way. We must remember that 2016 also included amazing milestones.  New lives were born, new marriages

started, new relationships were formed, and eternities have been changed forever. Let’s not for‐get to focus on what we can be thankful to God for, while we take note of what we want to help change for the better in 2017.  • It seems like when I listen to a new music album there is always one song that gets listened to

more than any other. (Do you see a pattern forming?!) The other album I’ve been listening to a lot is Crowder’s American Prodigal. The first single off that is called “My Victory” and it also has a refrain that grabbed ahold of me and just won’t let me go:

 Oh, your love bled for me. Oh, your blood in crimson streams. Oh, your death is hell’s defeat. A cross meant to kill is my victory.

The final line of that, “a cross meant to kill is my victory” is absolutely gripping to me. A device of death and torture played a pivotal role in giving me joy, peace, hope, and eternity with the Creator of All. Only God. Only God could make that true.

 I could go on, but some of my more random musings might cause you to question your decision 17 months ago, so I’ll table it here! I am blessed to be in this position and I hope that some of this will bless you as we start 2017. Let’s make the New Year one where we block out the noise of the world around us and fo‐cus on what we’ve been commanded to do. Let’s focus on binding up the broken, bringing freedom to the captives, and sharing the Good News from Claycomo to the ends of the Earth.            In Christ Alone,             Jamie

The year just past was wracked with violence, racism and political rancor. We long to fix these problems, but how? We may feel as frustrated as the church board member who spouted, “We’ve already tried prayer. It didn’t work!” Those words might resonate today, yet things aren’t always what they seem. We can’t see God behind the scenes crafting a new reality, but Scripture promises it. And though our prayers won’t undo earthly death, they surround the

grieving with strength and love. We can’t “solve” sin, but our prayers can bring communi-ties together and spur us to look out for one another. The Jewish Talmud states, “Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief. Do justly now. Love mercy now. Walk humbly now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” In this new year, may we be undaunted in doing what we can. It might not seem like much, but things aren’t always what they seem.

      I really like satire, even when I really like satire, even when   the satirist is picking on a group to which I belong or on

someone I consider a hero. If you haven’t yet seen the website, babylonbee.com, I recommend it to you. I consider it quite humorous—while sometimes carrying valid commentary regarding problem‐atic views and “values,” held by some within popular Christianity, which simply are not biblical at all.  I begin this article with a few selections from their article on the Top Ten Books of 2016:

We Can’t Dance If We Want To: Living In Holiness — John MacArthur: MacArthur excellently builds a scriptural case against rhythmic move‐ments of any kind, especially in church. Readers will leave this book with a renewed sense of reverence, and a fear of taking their hands out of their pockets for any reason.  Worldview: The Worldview: Worldview Edition — Al Mohler: Al Mohler is right in his wheel‐house when writing about worldviews, and his latest work, Worldview: The Worldview: World‐view Edition is an excellent guide to worldviews and the worldviews that view them in the world.  I Just Can’t Even With The Proper Doctrine You Guys — Jen Hatmaker: Encouraging readers to think of the book as “a big squishy hug,” Hatmaker uses her trademark conversational writing style to admonish all of us to “just be real, you know, and be true to our feelings, especially with things like theology and doctrine and I just can’t even.” A real page‐turner.  Get Out Of Debt By Selling Millions Of Books — Dave Ramsey: Financial guru Dave Ramsey shows Christians how to pay off debt, put money in the bank, and live happily ever after. His plan includes detailed steps on how to get people to buy millions of your books that mostly say the same thing, so you’ll become a millionaire too. Just don’t buy this one on a credit card!

 Yes, none of these books actually exist. They could be interesting reading, though, if they did!  :‐)  Now let me turn to a more serious list. Here are a few books I read this year which I think really will be of interest to you if you haven’t already read them:

Fearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown – Eric Blehm: The account of Navy SEAL, Adam Brown’s life. His story is a challeng‐ing and encouraging testimony of redemption and resolve. If you like true‐life war stories like Lone Survivor and American Sniper, you will enjoy this book.  The Free State of Jones – Victoria Bynum: Bynum writes of the events and happenings surround‐ing the development of the Mississippi‐based group, led by Newton Knight, which withdrew from the Confederacy as well as the Union. While she paints Knight in far too complimentary a light, making him a larger‐than‐life folk hero, her analysis of area churches, including Southern Baptists, is quite informative for us today.

Page 5: Claycomo Baptist Church - “Holding Forth the Word …...2017/01/02  · Fearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown – Eric

 A Practical View of Christianity – William Wilberforce: A politician who writes like a pastoral theologian. Wilberforce is the British Member of Parliament who was instrumental in ending the slave trade in England in 1807. His book is a practical theology seeking to apply the truth of Scrip‐ture to every facet of life. It reads like a book written by Jonathan Edwards or John Wesley, equally encouraging and challenging…and worth the time invested in it.  Openness Unhindered – Rosaria Butterfield: Dr. Butterfield’s second book further developing her story as “an unlikely convert” to faith in Jesus. Full disclosure, I am in the process of reading this book now. I have skipped ahead to the chapter which I hope those who read it will find eye‐opening, challenging, and encouraging: “Community: Representing Christ to the World.” She recently spoke at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church regarding sex‐ual identity and the Christian faith. Both of her books are worth the invest‐ment.

Happy reading! And if you have not read a book in a while, I encourage you to pick up one of these and enjoy.      By Grace Alone

monthly meetings in February.  Regular meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the

month at 12:00 noon from February through October.

Washed clean ~ Your morning shower can do more than cleanse your body. Retired pastor Norman Neaves takes time to remember his bap‐tism daily.

“As the water is pouring down on me, I reach up and get water all over my hand. Then I close my eyes and make the sign of the cross on my forehead. ‘I have been baptized in Christ,’ I say to myself quietly. ‘This day belongs to him. I am called to be Jesus’ rep‐resentative whatever I

am doing and wherever I might go. Give me the grace, Lord, to represent you well and with integrity.’”

Kindness counts • Make blankets or scarves for homeless people.  • Send a care package to someone who’s in college or the military.  • Collect coins for a charity or cause.  • When you can’t attend an event, give the tickets to strangers.  • Provide tutoring or men‐toring in your field of ex‐pertise.  • Offer to babysit or pet‐sit for free.  • Send a note of apprecia‐tion to someone who’s made a difference in your life.  • Share your gifts of music, reading or conversation at a nursing home.  • Donate old sports equip‐ment to schools.  • Give someone the benefit of the doubt — maybe even a family member or your‐self!

An insight on grace ~ Robert Louis Stevenson, the gifted writer who gave us A Child’s Garden of Verses, Treasure Island and other memo-rable books, was a man who had a sickly body. He died when he was only 44 years old. Despite his physical troubles, he was a person who took seriously the reality of God’s goodness and grace. He came to believe that we cannot live without it. Here is his brilliant statement of the neces-sity of God’s sustaining, unmerited love called grace: “Why not the grace of your maker and redeemer? He who upholds you? ... There is nothing but God’s grace. We walk upon it; we breathe it; we must live and die by it; it makes the nails and axles of the universe.”

Happy New Year 2017!  Happy New Year 2017!  As last year is now behind us, the thoughts we have for friends and family, and what they mean to us, is never forgotten.

This is a big Thank You to all who helped with celebrating my mom’s life, who passed last Au-gust. For the Claycomo Baptist Church family, who loves well, and who supports each other in kindness, words, deeds, and just being there… With Love & Blessings & Thank You’s, Pam Hunt

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What the New Year offers • A fresh start in the totality of our life. • A chance to do good things for others, especially older members of our family. • An opportunity to plan better for the future, including the use of our time, talent and possessions. • A challenge to read helpful books about living according to God’s plan. • A chance to better control stress and anxiety in body and spirit.
On your new calendar, be sure to mark important dates such as National Drinking Straw Day (January 3), National Artichoke Hearts Day (March 16) and National Crouton Day (May 13). Those pseudo‐holidays are now catalogued as part of the National Day Calen‐dar, a venture by a North Dakota businessman.
For a fee starting at $1,500, anyone can register a na‐tional day or even give one as a gift. Special‐interest groups are discovering that national days are great for marketing.
Throughout the Bible, God instructs people to set aside special days for rest and re‐membrance. Yet to him, every day is holy — even if it lacks a holiday, pseudo or otherwise. “This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
The meaning of Epiphany The meaning of Epiphany
Epiphany, which comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, means “an ap‐pearance” or “a revealing.” Centuries ago, the church set aside January 6, the 12th day after Christmas, to mark the revealing of Jesus as Christ to the wise men, who were Gentiles. Jesus’ first followers were Jewish, so the revelation of the divine Christ to the non‐Jewish magi reminds us that Jesus came to earth to save the whole world.
Symbols of Epiphany include light, a star, a crown (or three crowns) and a globe or stylized portrayal of the world. The color of Epiphany is green to symbolize life, growth, hope and eternity.   On the church calendar, the Epiphany season lasts until Ash Wednesday, which is determined by the date of Easter.
  January Update  December was once again a fun month for the youth at CBC. We kind of took a break from our typical weekly
schedule and were able to do some fun seasonal things. One fun event that took place was our annual white elephant Christmas party, which was hosted by Kevin this year.  The night was full of good food, fun games and good laughs. Some of the white elephant gifts were SUPER funny.   We also took the opportunity as a youth group to participate in our annual Christmas caroling night.
The weather might have been freezing cold, but that didn’t stop us from having a great night nevertheless. The youth were also involved in helping with this years Children’s Lock‐in at the church. It was a nice way to get to help minister and serve the families of our church.
As we start the new year, we are super excited with anticipation for all the things that God has in store for us as a youth group. Kevin and I met together recently and came up with a calendar of not only some super fun events , but also some great opportunities to serve the church and the commu‐nity. Below is just a sneak peak of some of the events that we have in store for the next couple of months:   January 21st ‐ Laser tag at Jagers ($5 per person)   January 29th ‐ Winter Jam ($10 at the door)   February 11th ‐ Valentine’s fund raising dinner   February 18th ‐ Youth Movie night @ the church  We truly do appreciate all that the church does to help our youth and leaders and we ask that you continue to lift up the youth group in your prayers as we continue through this time of transition.          Youth Leadership Team
Two pastors stood by the side of a road
holding up a sign that read: “The End
is Near! Turn around now before
it’s too late!”
Along came a young man who apparently had no time for re-
ligion. He slowed his car down and yelled at the clergymen, “Leave us alone, you religious nuts!” Then, with tires screeching, he sped
off. He had hardly left the scene when the clergymen heard a terrible noise
that ended with a loud splash.
One pastor turned to the other and said, “Do you think we should change
our sign to read simply, ‘BRIDGE OUT!’?”
WISE WORDS
Want to provoke a warm response from others? Look in people’s eyes and smile sincerely.
Faith isn’t meant to be kept to oneself. It simply has to be shared in non‐threatening ways and shown in loving actions.
Peace must begin within ourselves. Anger only provokes anger in others.
We cannot make enough of the virtue of trust. If we cannot be trusted, of what value are we?
ATTENTION EVERYONE!
If you or someone you know would like to attend Sunday School and Morning Worship Service but cannot or do not
drive, we have begun a church van route and would be happy to include you!
Please call the office and let us know you would like a ride and we will add you to the list and give you an ap‐proximate pick‐up time. Of course, return home time de‐pends on how long it takes to round everyone up and
hit the road!
Revered and read  In many churches, an ornate Bible lies open on the worship table near
the entrance to the sanctuary. Someone once commented that this is an appropriate symbol for some Christians — a Bible that is revered but never read. Let us prove that observer wrong.
