To assist in the manuPacture of ssfety arm guards all clubs are asked to again refer to the illustration of an approved design in this issue - if in doubt please contact your State Association or the A.C.T.A.

AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET N E W S - FEBRUARY 1990

Clay Pigeon Shooting ~ssociatiGn on tge possibility 3 in- troducing a biannual shoulder to shoulder competition bet- ween competing countries in the Maclcintash Teams Event. If successful we would see a team from all countries com- peting in a lOOT match with the venue rotating biannually from country to country commencing in 1992 when allcoun- tries would compete in England and finishing in the year 2000 when all countries visit Australia. A bit of wishful thi&ing perhaps, however, certainly well worth a try as it would add great interest to the already prestigious Mackin- tosh Teams Event - further information will be available as soon as the views of the other countries have been obtained.

On the skeet side, the conditions of competition for a Skeet "Mackintosh" Event are now before the eight countries that shoot the D.T.L. events with aviewto commencing this com- petition in 1991, with all results being declared at the A.C.T.A. National Skeet Championships. Early indications for the introduction of this teams match have been most favourable and we look forward to an early reply from all of the countries involved.

Approval has been obtained from the transfer of the 1991 Trap Nationals from South Australia to Western Australia with the 1993 Championships now scheduled for South Australia. Hopefully the problems that confronted S.A.C.T.A. for 1991 willbe solved in sufficient time to ensure that the 1993 Trap Nationals are held in that State. No deci- sion has been reached so far as the 1991 Olympic Discipline Championships are concerned, however, this situation should be resolved at an early date.

New members to the Association who at the timeof ioinine receive a complimentary A.C.T.A. badge will be theiirst receive one of the new A.C.T.A bad-a which have been ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ - - ~~~- ~~ - ~~~~ ---. ~ ~

designed around Lhe badge being used for the 1991 World Championships, although on a slightly larger scalc Badges will be available from the offlce for any person wishing to purchase and next month's C.T.S.N. will cany a notice to that effect.

Applications to the Australian Institute of Sport for funds toassistourLadiesand Junior Shootereprepareforthe 1991 World Championship unfortunately did not receive the suc- cess which we believe they deserved. With the Perth Cham- pionships providing the first financial opportunity to have teams in all events it was disappointing to say the least for our funding application to be rejected in total. We have another opportunity to present our case, when applications for 1990191 are called for and those Ladies and Juniors who are determined to gain selection in the Australian Team for the World Championships are assured that every effort will be made to gain for them some financial assistance.

Commonwealth Games are c-ntly being contested and so far as shooting is concerned we are confident of good per- formances being achieved. On behalf of all members of the A.C.T.A. we extend our best wishes to the Australian Shooting Team and in particular to Team Manager, Rob Smith and the Shotgun Team of John Maxwell and Russell Mark m a p ) and Ian Hale and Craig Meuleman (I.S.U. Skeet), allof whom are capableof bringinghome gold medals for Australia.

Trap Nationals in Tasmania next month, and all appears Set for a memorable competition at the Tasmanian Gun Club situated at Evandale. Nationals commence on Saturday, 24th March with the Annual General Meeting being held on Friday, 23rd Maroh. The Tasmanian Clay Target Associa- tion have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Na- tionals, particularly for the visitors from the mainland and the large contingent from New Zealand. If you haven't made your arrangements as yet, there is still time to do so. If you wish to do so you are able to lodge a postal entry which enables you to indicate your preferred shooting time, which although not guaranteed will be allocated to you if at all possible. Postal nominations close on the coupon in this month's C.T.S.N. on 28th February, please take advantage of this facility if it is of assistance to you.

ED R'S OX Sir.

The Skeet National Carnival in Wagga was a great success and not a little credit must go to the hard working staPf and the "Blue tailed Fly" Barney who was here, there and everywhere keeping the show moving along. Unfortunately it was marred by the nasty accident that incapacitated our hard working shoot marshal and saw him spend the rest of the carnival in hospital. We all hope now Adrian that you havefullyrecovered. Robbie Smith was able to fill the bill un- til he too was forced to retire early, due to family sickness and again we hope that all's now well in the Smith family. The weather was kind evenBob Buchan would have to admit that, though a little hot and sultry for a couple of days, resulting in a storm on the Saturday, which didn't last long.

The average scores shot in the doubles was better than the average scores shot in the Double Rise at the trap Nationals, so I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be included in the high gun. The high gun is over the advertised programme and that isas it shouldbe, so hopefully we'llseeit ineludedin future.

1990 REGISTRATIONS - CTSN

Any person registered for 1989 whose 1990 renewal has not been received as at February 28th will have their names removed from the CTSN mailing list and will not receive copies of the clay target shooting news following the March issue.

Memberships renewed after the 28th February will be returned to the m d b g list, however it is pmbable that at least one month's issue of the CTSN will not be received through the mail with copies unavailable through the ACTA office.

To ensurecontinuity of registration and all monthly issues of the CTSN it is imnortant that sufficient time is eiven to ~ ~ - - - - - - - ~-

allow your club secretary to remit your registratio; to the ACTA - please assist your club secretary in this regard.

T1E RY SN It is a while since one of these columns has been ~mduced ~ ~ ~

but that does not mean that nothing is happeningup in the land of the never never.

The biggest news of late has been the formation of a new club at Groote Eylandt. This club under the stewardship of Kevin Ross has 15 members;a DTL layout and shoots evely second Sunday. This is not a bad start for a small isolated community and we all wish them well. Groote is a beautiful place and it would not take a lot of promotion to become a really cxotic, rap, shooting venue.

Strange goings on at Alice Springs: major changes at the AGM with a new president, secretary etc. but then followed by even further changes. SufPice to say Mick Milera is still president with Michael Farren as secretary. Glad to see you still in the saddle Mick. Hope all's well for the new year.

Darwin also had an AGM recently. Ken Selwood has stayed on as president, Phil Grove as secretary and John Fletcher is keeping them honest as treasurer. Peter Hoare has taken on the all important role of bar manager (that's got to be worth a beer Peter?).

The pilot's strike upset the N.T. skeet team's plans of at- tending the skeet nationals but our lone representative, Jim Bitossi, did us pmud by taking out B Grade of the 25 pair National Skeet Doubles Championship. "'On ya Jim!" Things have been fairly quiet at Bormlwla but should hot

up again after the wet. Yulara have been going along well and have been busy

planning their major annual shwt for the Australia Day weekend so if you are looking for something unusual. slip over to Yulara for that weekend. I can assure you that the hospitality will be tops.

Yulara junior shooter, Chris Warren, all of 12 years, is progressing well and has been spansored by the. N.T. Government for special coaching and will be attending the Tassie Nationals with the Territory team.

Most clubs in the Territory wound down over the Christmas break mainly because it is just too hot. Darwin's Christmas shwt. held over the weekend 9-10 December. was well attended. Two Commonwealth titles were shot in- cluding 50 Single Barrel Day and 25 Deauville Doubles Night. Victor FerteWis took out the Single Barrel and the Deauville Doubles was won by John Fletcher and Victor Padovan.

The festive spirit at that shoot affected different people in different ways. Late in the very hot Darwin day, a call for a target was immediately followed by a dreadful noise reminiscent oP two sheets of sandpaper being torn. "Lost!" growled the referee, "It is supposed to be a single barrel event!"

All the best for 1990 to all shooters from the Territory. Bob Fox

V f i E EVA LEE

I t i s with much sadness tha t the Waswick Clay Target Club reports the passing of Eva Lee.

Mrs Lee was a foundation member of the Club, which was formed in 1949, was awarded a Life Membership in 1969 and held the position of President in 1966 and 1967.

Many shooters will remember the fine shooting style of Eva's late husband Clarrie, which was passed on ta son Kevin and grandson J6hn.

A stalwart member, sadly missed, Vale 'WX'. Our sympathies to sons Keith and Kevin and families.

JOE WALLIS We were all saddened recently by the passing of Mr Joe

Wallis whom the older shooters will remember. Although Joe never competed in clay target events h e

was Secretary of Myamyn Gun Club for approximately ten years and took a keen interest in the sport r ight u p until - . his death.

Most of his life was spent as a farmer at Breakaway Creek, but in later years as his health failed h e moved into Hamilton.

HAROLD NEVILLE The Devonport Clay Target Club would lilre to advise the

passing of foundation and life member. Harold Neville. Harold was always a willing worker a t club level and was a past Secretary - Treasurer. Harold wasn't able to shoot the las t few years but h e always enjoyed coming to the club on shoot days.

He will be sadly missed. H e was truly a dedicated club member.

The club wishes to extend to Phylis and his family our deepest sympathies.

What a day we had at Wonthaggi Gun Club on December 2. The weather was gwd but a little on the windy side. Being our last shwt for 1989 it was our Xmas shwt and we had a very good attendance. 35 shooters, plus wives and children made it a very enjoyable day. The clubhouse had been decorated with Xmas decorations and we even had a Xmas tree.

After the shwt the ladies in the canteen put on a full Xmas dinner, turkey. Xmas pudding and all the time and ef- fort put in by all those concerned was greatly appreciated by everybody, thanks to you all.

The day was fully sponsored and our guest and sponsor David Siminton from "Computer Implementation Con- sultants" attended to present the trophies. The highlight of the day was the method our sponsor used to arrive at the club. David flew from Moorabbin to Wonthaggi in a helicopter and landed it in the paddook beside the club. Needless to say this was a real thrill for the kids. big and small. Steven and Corrie Parks were rather disappointed when their father Wayne told them that it wasn't their Xmas present and they had to give it back. I would, on behalf of the club like to thank David for making the day a real success and I believe a first for Gippsland, as we are probably the only club with a heli pad. Sponsorship such as that eiven to us bv "Comnuter ImDlementation Con- sultan<sm is very h&d to tome by &d is very much appreciated.

The first four events were graded A.B.C. 1.2.3. and prizes were hams for 1st and poultry for 2nd and 3rd. The last event was triple rise and was won by Don Kendall and Lynn Gray. There were graded high gum trophies as well and the winners were: A grade Keith Grey, B grade Fred Fwn. C grade Tup Pedersen. Ladies Lynn Gray. Junior Mitch Fwn.

On behalf of the Wonthaggi Gun Club I would like to wish all of you a safe and prosperous New Year and hope to see YOU at Wonthaeei in the near future. --

Good luck and good shooting Keith Gmy, Resident

SILENCE BECAME EVIDENT.

SLOWLY the committee came to life, one by one we all had something to say -

"I'U fix the club door", said Paul D. Kim N, 'TU do the trap door, i£ I can get some steel".

"Done!!", commented Paul T. "I'll deliver it tomorrow". Conversation really moved along and by the end of the

meeting. if everything went according to plan, we would have 3 rrrZ layouts ready. all tmphies picked up and 2,000 tickets sold for charity. THE REST OF THE STORY IS HISTORY. B.v the trmc Saturday 2nd of Deccmber 6.30pm came

The Guns with the latest and up to date technology built into them: Perazzi is the innovative gun that has done so much for so many in such a short time (in comparison with other manufacturers)

since their introduction that it is obviously the quality gun of the present and very possible the gun of the foreseeable future. It is the gun that amazes shooters (beginners andsxperienced) with its most effortless speed and ease of handling to give you the scores. That score that makes you a winner - in fact if you take notice it is the gun that is making headlines up front more often most times for the percentage of guns used.

Now anaiyse this and you must surely convince yourself that value for money your first or next gun must surely be a PERAZZI. Their balance is superb. We have so many of the more popular models in stock that there must surely be a model to suit you. If not, it would only be a telex call away and remember they are easy to shoot and extremely soft on your shoulder.

Also you must surely appreciate the simplicity of its dismantling and reassembling quality system as the innovation of the century and second to none in gun design. If you haven't seen one, ask anyone who has one. He would be as proud to show it to you as he is to own it.

So now think positive - "PERAZZI FROM YOUI".

50UEARSAGO ... AND IN BE EN By George Bigs, A.C.T.A. Historian

Despite the declaration of war in September 1939, Trap shmthg went almost unhindered for several months after.

October 1939 was particularly busy in Victorian shooting. Georee Barber ~artnered bv "Duxbac" won the Victorian ~ea<';ile~oubl;s Champioiship at Coburgwith a 20120 prs outright. Jack Bryant won the Victorian Double Rise at Seymour to make his ninth title for the year. CLUBS WiTH EARLY BEGINNINGS - WANGARAWA

I am fast running out of information on early days gun clubs, i.e. clubs that were formed and operated with live birds in the days before clays were intmduced in the late 1920s and have now become some of our foremost clay target clubs of today.

One such club is the Wangaratta Gun Club in north eastern Victoria formed on May 16. 1919 and still shooting todav. It is one of Victoria's ~remier clubs.

'&e original site for the cl;h was chosen to be at the rear of the present showgrounds. Live birds only were shot at this ground including pigeons, galahs and starlings. The club changed to its present position at the rear of the Vine Hotel during the late 20's. Clay targets were shot together with live birds as early as 1934 using a single hand cmked trap bolted to a large wooden block. The clay targets were usually used to fill the gaps in between the live birds events, which were still regarded with more priority.

The Wangaratta Gun Club bas been host to many great gunshots including the great John W. (Calrossie) Sutherland and Newton Thomas. Shooting was discon- tinued during the war years due to the ammunition shor- tage but again flourished after the war. Betting was also

Harvey Nunn of Paringa took the " B Grade honours with 35-50 and again a shoot-off for second between Peter Caddy (Barmera), Robert Maywald (Waikerie) and "Robbie" Robertson (Mildura). Peter Caddy won the shoot- off wi th 38-58.

" C Grade went to "Rocky" Spencer (Waikerie) 30-50, followed by Mark Rover (Remark) 25-50. Best Lady was Rita Maywald 19-50.

The "Bill Marschal Memorial Shield for teams of four was held in conjunction with the 50 Target Simulated and saw the Mildura team of Lea Featherston (37). "Robbie" Robertson (32). Dennis Moy (33) and Peter Tobin (37) amalgamate the good score of 139-200 to take the shield.

After a magnificent barbecue supplied by the ladies of the club it was "lights on" for the 25 Target Night Double Barrel Cham~ionshi~. This event was sDonsored bv the Mid-Murray Pine past Co, and the first prize was an outdoor setting of chairs and table. This trophy was eagerly sought after and the only shooter to 'cleanskid the lot was Ray Wylie of Barmera, much to the delight of his wife Linda. Ivan Maywald (Waikerie) took second place with 24-25 and sonRobert was thirdon 30-32 after a shoot- Off with Don Molina and Dennis Moy (Remark).

Many of the visiting sbwters camped at the range ovelnight and were ready the next morning to start again. It was another fine day and shooting got awsy promptly at loam with the 50 Target Simulated, some targets having been changed since the previous day.

Gus Clarkson and Peter Tobin again proved to be too strung for the opposition, taking 1st and 2nd in "A" Grade with 43-55 and 40-55 after a shoot-off, both having shot 39-50 over the two rounds.

In " B Grade father and son, Ivan and Robert Maywald finished in that order with 36-50 and 34-50, whilst mother Rita twk the Ladies' honours with 19-50,

"Rocky" Spencer repeated his Saturday efforts in "C" Grade. again taking 1st place with 23-50 followed by R. Shawyer (Renmark) 22-50.

The "George Handcoch" Memorial Shield 15 Target Points Score saw Bill Wilksch and Don Molina drop only one point to score 44-45. This meant only using their second barrel once over the 15 targets. The eventual winner was Bill with 50-51 with Don 2nd on 49-50 and Trevor Shaddock (Remark) 3rd with 43-45.

The big event of the shoot, The "Greyhound Coaches- Flag Internationw' 20 Target Double Barrel, attracted the greatest number of shooters as the winner was to receive a trip for two to Sydney courtesy of the sponsor. Four shooters - Peter Tobin, Trevor Shaddock. Don Molina and Gus Clarkson all shot the possible 20-20 and then settled down to one of the most exciting shoot-offs seen at the range for many years.

First to dmp out was Clarkson, followed soon after by Shaddock, then it was neck and neck with both shooters having to go and pick up more shells, when finally Molina dropped his 52nd target, giving the trip to Tobin with 52-52..

Sash Winners for the 100 Target Simulated over the two days were - " A Grade: Gus Clarkson 80-100; " B : Ivan Maywald 67-100; "C". "Rocky" Spencer 45-100. Gus Clarkson twk out the "Eddie Traeger" High Gun Award with a fine 158-185.

On making the presentations, the Club President, Ivan Maywald, expressed his sincere thanks to all whose firms etc that had sponsored the various events and who had donated tmphies for all the placegetters. It was only through this generosity that the club was able to raise money for charity and he felt certain that the hospital

would benefit to the tune of appmx. $1000. He then presented the various winners with their sashes and tmphies and called upon Mr John Gordon, Manager of the Waikerie Travel Centre, to present Peter Tobin with the vouchers for his Sydney trip on behalf of "Greyhound Coaches" and "Flag International".

He also gave thanks to the ladies for their efforts in providing meals over the weekend and last but not least to the shooters themselves for their continued support.

The "Hospital Rsffle" was drawn by Mrs Joyce Spencer and the prize winners were Mark Webber. Ivan Maywald. Bill Wilksch, K. Napier and Robert Maywald.

General comments were that it was one of the best two- day shoots for some years and that it was very well organised and catered for.

The Waikerie Range boasts a full Simulated layout, a Skeet layout with fully auto-loading traps as well as the normal "Down the Line" trap range.

This month I would like to talk about goals. To attain suc. cess we must learn the basics, master the skills and have a positive attitude.

We can accomplish what we want i£ we put in the work. Yes, it is hard work, but working with a goal, an ultimate goal of accomplishment is what makes champions, suc- cessful businessmen and women, even a full and happy life.

Whatever your desire in life is, you can reach it if you sit down and work out a lone term ~ l a n to achieve it. -~ ~ ~

A good friend CP n&Le';ncc s2d - -plan your work and then work your plan" -that llas certainly worked for him.

WHAT THEN ARE GOALS? It has bcen said Lhnt "man" is always wanting something

anddoingsomechrngabout his wants. SincethechirftraicoP a h m a n being is wanting then his wmts nrc his goals.

We are often quite aware of what our goals really are. If this is the case, then rve are really wandering thmugh life without direction or purpase - just hoping things will change for the better or our luck might improve.

Where then should you begin if $u wi& to construct a framework of goals?

Firstly you have to decide, are your goals the most impor- tant thine vou wish to achieve. are thev worthwhile?

Now &;you know what you' want thin you should be able to write it down.

This being done, you should then also be able towrite down the way in which you can achieve it.

Fcr example, a shooter who averages 94% and has an overall goal of winning the National High Gun must set a short term goal of attaining 95% consistently over the next three (3) months. The plan would include positive practice. competitions and sessions with his coach.

At the end of the three (3) month period he would analyse his pmgress, readjust his goals as required.

Depending on this shooter's ability and dedlation a plan such as this could be over a period of three or four years before the goal was achieved.

REPORT Coaching is the art of assistingpeople to participate better

in their chosen sport. With ClayTarget shooting, alot of time is out into teachins the c o e t stance, guxdit &d hold and the basics of hitti$ moving targets - b'th in long and short barrel disciplines.

Three areas that don't get much airing, but are just as im- portant to understand are Superstition, Gamesmanship and that word Pressure.

superstitions are things that most of us have in some shape or form. Generally these little quirks do not interfere in our shooting, but every now and then, one can be let grow where it can assume prime importance. Even before we call for the target. A simple example is where you may have won an important event (i.e. State Double Barrel) in which a par- ticular shirt, shoes or cap was worn. Next time you go out to participate, you ensure that that particular item is worn. In- itially this causes no problems until after several successful shoots have passed, the item is worn out, lost or left at home.

Now is the time superstition takes hold as that item is synonymous with winning and doubt about being capable of winning without it takes over.

The same goes for the shooter who continuously fiddles with cartridges in the gull, ensuring the writing on the brass is horizontal. This seeminelv simDle a l i m e n t can become oaranoia to the mint whek"a shwter &s to take the rmn ~- ~~~~ Z~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~

from thc shoulder, just to check that the canridgcs & in correct ;tlignment. If asked why they do it, the answer is generally a blank look or best of all: i t ensures the pattern comes out the right way.

In actual fact it's superstit~on and somcthing thc mind has conmeed Lhe body it needs to do, to get an edge for hitting targets. None of tlie above examples hsve any relevance and it only cluttersthemind. OncetheSuperstitionis broken, the mind can get back to the task of simply breaking targets.

Gam~imanship should never be compared with sport- smanship as the shooter who practises it, is generally not a sportsman. We all have been a victim or seen situations where subtle tricks of one can cause another to miss targets. AU tca often they are missed by a referee, who is concen- trating on releasing a good target. These tricks are subtle: like blowingdowmthe barrels, late ejeotingof empties, scuff- ing the feet and the old favourite of jiggling shells in the m e t . All of this, just on or before you call pull.

Strangely, the person using gamesmanship is generay the one who is worried the most. He is the one unsure of his own abilitv and uses outside interference to effect an easy win. ~ext-time. once vou realise what is hao~enine. t u n tb ~~ - -~~~ ~~ ~, ~ ~~

the individual and seewho it is, regisLer ani'accept'the pro- blem, then return to Lhc task of hitting your own target. Before many more clays have been broken, you the lncended victim, will have turned the tables.

Pressureis a word that we hear of at every shoot andone of the most commonly used excuses for loss of a target at a crucial time. The word pressure is actually an inwrreot description for what is being allowed to formulate in our minds.

Doubt is the correct term. Doubt that we don't have the ability to carry on hitting targets for as long as a big named shooter who may be next to you, or doubt that you can shoot that 25 and go onto the shoot off.

This will virtually get to a "death wish" situation where the doubt buildup causes you to miss a target so you don't have to try and compete further. This is not what is termed pressure but is letting a situation take over. To control this uncertainty, a touch of mental toughness training, from an appropriate Coaoh, will help overcome the doubts you may have in vour owm abilitv.

~ "~ Theseareas need not be a problem as they can beexplained

with the use of commonsense. But i t is still up to the in- d~vidual to seek a Coach and broach the subject so help can be obtained.

SHOOTING GLASSES AND LENSES Romancing the Target

Have you ever been to a registered shoot and marvelled at the diverse types of shooting glasses and lenses being worn by the competitors? I have been especially puzzled by the various colors of lenses being worn by some very good shooters. I kept asking myself "what are those purple lenses for?" or "Why are some of these world beaters wear- ing orange lenses while others are wearing brown or red?"

I've also wondered if there was any specific combination of lens colors that a shooter should have to be prepared for any possible light and target situation. If there were an answer to that question, then why aren't all of the good shooters wearing the same lenses on any given day? Final- ly, I spoke to Bud Deoot of Deoot Hy-Wyd Sports Glasses. Inc. His glasses and generic copies of his design seem to be the oredominate models worn bv com~etitive shooters. so I ~. ~ ~

figured that he would be the on: to adk. SpcciPically, I ask- ed him whai the various colors are for, whnt his most popular colors are, and what he would recommend if so- meone had to choose three lens colors and stick with them under all conditions.

The first thing that he said was that you have to "romance the target color." In other words, you have to use a lens that will isolate the target from the background and make it as easy as possible to focus andconcentrate on that target. Unfortunately, everyone sees colors different- ly and their perception of any color is different. Some trial and ermr is probably necessary to di-ver what lens color is best for any individual shooter. It would also depend on where you are shooting. For example, someone who shot against a predominantly green background would have different needs than someone who shot against the sky.

There are several colors that are appropriate for enhanc- ing that orange target, and any one of them might do the job. According to Bud, however, the most important thing is to use the lightest tint that you can possibly stand on the brightest day. There is a very logical reason for this. The more light to which your eye is exposed, the more your pupil will constrict. If your pupil is constricted, youwill ex- PsTience better focusing ability and superior depth percep- tion. Therefore, you will be able to pick up the target more rapidly, focus on it more clearly, and shoot better as a result. Anyone who has operated a manual camera always Creates a greater depth of field and a greater likelihood of the picture being in focus.

Once a~a in . the sinele most imwrtant feature of vour glasses, &ether than p & e r prescribtion, should be h k g them as light in tint as you can stand.

When was the last time that you saw apro golferwearing sunglasses? They don't wear them because in their sport depth of field and distance judgement is crucial. It is also crucial in skeet shooting.

AUSTRALIAN CLAYTARGET NEWS - FEBRUARY 1990

The following is a description of the most popular and functional lens tints available the Hy-Wyd sports glasses range.

1) Target Orange - This is his most popular color when combined with the Blu-Ban. which filters out light from the blue part of the spectrum. Blue is a "long" light wave, and consequently is difficult to focus. Eliminating it makes the target seem sharper and more in focus. The orange enhances the orange of the target.

2) Target Sun - This is that "purple" color that I wondered about. It is really a combination of grey and ver- milion. It dampens green and enhances an orange target against a green background. It is very popular in the east where many skeet fields back up against large trees.

3) Target Gold, Yellow, and Clear - AU of these lenses are used to bring in as much light as possible on foggy, dark days and under the lights at night. Anew wrinkle for these lenses is the reflection-free coating. A normal lens will allow about 95% of the light through. The reflection-free coating increases this to 99.5%. It is supposed to be a real advantage, but is also somewhat costly as it is a patented process. Also, you have to be very careful cleaning them.

4) Target Bronze - Another popular all purpose lens. The current variety has Blu-Ban orange in it and it is good for general shooting use.

Green and Grey - neither of these colors do anything to enhance the target. In addition, the green will enhance a green background and actually disguise the target. He gets orders for these colors from shooters and eye doctors who don't know the difference between sunglasses and shooting glasses.

There are actually eight different variations of Decot Blu-Ban and Ultra Violet blocking lenses including lite orange, medium orange, lite tan, medium tan, bronze, burnt orange, and vermilion. They are all intended to be general purpose shooting lenses. Because they change the way that you see colors, blue blocking lenses should be worn only before and during shooting. Do not use them as sunglasses or for driving. The FAA has told pilots not to wear them all of the time for this reason.

All through our conversation, Bud kept emphasising the importance of using the lightest tint that you can tolerate. He also implied that you can acclimatise yourself to a lighter tint by forcing yourselt. Someone who works in an office all day and then wears extra dark sunglasses for driving and general outdoor use will have problems with the light tints at first. You have to get your eyes used to it over a period of weeks.

Your eyes can become over sensitized to light for many reasons. Bud specifically mentioned nicotine and alcohol as prime offenders. They sap vitamins from your eyes and make them light sensitive. A two pack a day smoker will nearly always have to use a darker shade of lens.

It took a while, but I managed to finally pin Bud down on his selection of three lenses for all occasions. Actually, he said that most shooters could get by with two sets. First, he recommends a pair of gold 15 or yellow lenses with the reflection free coating for dulldays and night shooting. Se- oond, he recommended a pair of Blu-Ban lite target orange for most general purposes. All sets should have the UV filter, of course. If someone felt they had to have a third set of lenses, he recommended either the purple for whenever you have to shoot against a green background, or a darker set of some type for extremely bright conditions, but only if you are very light sensitive and can't do without them.

Bud feels very strongly that we control the efficiency of our vision by how we treat our eyes. He says that even a middle aged guy can change his vision in two to four weeks using proper exercise and acclirnatisation to light. He referred me to two books that deal with this subject. They are "An Insight to Sports, Featuring Trapshooting and Golf" by Dr. Wayne E. Martin, O.D., and "Sports-Vision" by Leon Revien. O.D.. and Mark Gabor.

The Wagga Committee would like to thank all those who assisted in anyway to help the Pre-Nationals and Nationals run smoothlv.

To our Sponsors f o r [ h e r ongoing support and sponscr- s h i p , w i t h o u t t h i s the C h a m p i o n s h i p s would not have been such a huge success.

Shooters who attended who agree that the Media Coverage was excellent. Daily coverage for the whole car- nival was supported by the Prime Network (television), The Daily Advertiser. Riverina Leader and 2WG Radio.

The Wagga Club is indeed a very lucky club with local Sponsorship, support from the Wagga Wagga City Council and ~ e o ~ l e within the Citv. Media Coveraee. Clubs and ~nteha-ent and a high itandard of acco&nodation.

Welcome to our N Z , American and English v i s i t o r s , we hope you enjoyed your stay and will be back again soon.

Next August Wagga will again host the NSW State Skeet Carnival, so organise your accommodation scon. - Until next time around the shoots,

Maree Rooke

TARGET CLUB Wangaratta Junior Skeet shooters achieved success

beyond their highest expectations at the National Skeet Championships conducted in November at Wagga. NSW.

William also shot his f i r s t ever 25 target break then a 75 target break the fo l low- ing day.

The Holloway brothers have only been shooting skeet since May, therefore their performances are highly commendable.

Thirteen year old Richard Sammon may be small in stature but is big in ability and performances. Richard won the National Junior Wuble Championship with a score of 46150 , and the Commonwealth Junior Skeet Championship scoring 1011108. Richard also obtained his first 50 break - not bad for a lad who has been shooting skeet f o r less than two years and is so tiny that he can hardly see over the nomination window at the Secretary's of f i ce .

The three lads also f e a t u r e d in the count for the Junior High Gun with William running s e c o n d , Richard third and Robbie fifth.
