Clay pavers add warmth and hospitality to any indoor or outdoor space
The classic clay paver can be elegant, rustic or traditional. A variety ocolors, textures and installation patterns make them a highly creative an
adaptable paving surace.
Versa-Tile & Mica-Tile are designed or interior and exterior use
horizontal suraces. Versa-Tile and Mica-Tile should be laid accordito specifc application (see details) and are intended or non-vehicapplications.
Clay Pavers are designed or setting dry on a sand bed where thickneis desired or trafc and physical locking o units. They may be uswith either the smooth or wire-cut side as the wearing surace. The ndimensions o 4 x 8 inches permit patterns bonds where mortar joinare not used. The various sizes allow or use in both pedestrian and ligvehicle applications.

SAND-SET:
Excavation: Excavate to the design levels.
Compact Subgrade: Compact the subgrade to at least95% o standard Proctor density as specied in ASTMD 698.
Base Rock: Place and compact a base o 5/8" (16 mm)minus crushed rock in layers o not more than 2" (100mm) to a smooth uniorm surace to the grade and crosssection required. The minimum surace tolerance o thecompacted base should be 3/8 in. ( 10 mm) over a 10t (3 m) straightedge. A geotextile may be placed belowthe base rock as needed.
The thickness o the base materials is determined by trac,
soil type, climate, drainage, and moisture. Pedestrianapplications should have a minimum base thickness o 4inches (100 mm) ater compaction. Residential drivewaysshould have a minimum sub-base thickness o 6 inches(150 mm) ater compaction.
Edge Restraint: Install the edge restraint system toprevent settling and spreading. Follow specications andmanuacturers instructions or installing edge restraints.
Bedding Sand: Bedding sand under pavers should meetASTM C 33 or CSA A23.1 specications. Bedding sandshould be spread and screeded to a thickness o 1 to 1 1/2inches (25-40 mm). Use screed pipes and a straight andtrue strike board to level the bedding sand.
Lay Pavers: Begin in one corner o the project and beginlaying pavers in the desired pattern, moving outward ina triangular pattern. Chalk lines snapped on the beddingsand or string lines pulled across the pavers can be usedto maintain straight joint lines. The joint widths betweenpavers should be approximately 1/16 to 1/8 inches (2-3mm). Cut pavers should be used to ll in gaps along theedges o the project. Be sure to mix pavers rom multiplepallets to achieve a consistent color blend.
Compact: Ater placing an area o pavers, compact themusing a vibrating plate compactor capable o exerting3,000-5,000 lbs. (1300-2200 kN) o centriugal compactionorce operating at 75-90 hertz (use a 3,000 lb. compactor or1 1/
2" Pavers). A rubber/plastic mat should be used on the
compactor. Make at least two passes to insure that pavers
have been seated in the compacted bedding sand.Fill Joints: Sweep dry joint sand into the paver jointsand compact the pavers again until the joints are ull.Compaction should be within 3 t. (1 m) o an unrestrainededge or laying ace. At the end o each day, all pavers within3 t. (1 m) o the laying ace should be compacted. Installany remaining edge restraints.

3 to 7 days
Materials:- portland cement: ASTM C-150 Type 1- sand: ASTM C-144- water: potable- mortar: 1 part portland cement, 4 to 5 parts damp
sand by volume- bond coat: portland cement paste on a mortar bed that
is still workable, or dry-set mortar or latex-portlandcement mortar on a cured bed
- grout: ANSI A118.6, speciy type- mortar bed bond coat: portland cement slurry.
Preparation by Other Trades:- provide subsurace drainage- slope slab or complete drainage
- slab to have steel trowel and ne broom nish withno curing compounds used (when used, mechanicalscariying is necessary).
- max. variation in the slab shall not exceed 1/4" in10'-0" rom the required plane
Expansion Joint: Architect must speciy expansion jointsand show location and details on drawings.
