Clay has been used to make sculptural and functional forms for probably longer than any other ‘art’ material. Its malleability makes it perfect to shape and its transformation through the processes of fire produces, almost magically, a material that has proven to have survived millennia.

Despite this, clay is often viewed as a material of craft, not art. Even some of our most important public collection still discriminate on the basis of medium.

One of our most loved artists, Marea Gazzard, was a staunch advocate that form was what determined the worth of any work, not the material. Last year CLAY 1 was a tribute to Marea’s philosophy.

This year, CLAY 2 continues the tradition with five sculptors who have chosen clay as their medium. All have a good knowledge and respect for forms made with clay, but none are bound by conventions of function, though many do not mind if the work is used.

It is exciting to see the work of mature artists side by side with that of young and emerging artists, all with their own clear voice.

C.H.
