Remember:
Independent Clause: a part of a sentence that can stand on its own because it has a subject and predicate

Remember:

Example: Even though she’s 88 years old
Review: Complex Sentences
Reminder:
Complex Sentence: a sentence that combines a dependent clause and an independent clause
Example: Even though she’s 88 years old, my grandma loves roller coasters.

Remember: Conjunctions are words that combine sentences or clauses together.
Subordinating conjunction: combines an independent clause and a dependent clause
Examples: after, although, as, because, before, even if, even though, if, since, unless, until
Even though she’s 88 years old, my grandma loves roller coasters.
Directions
1. Read the clause.
2. Use your board to identify it as either independent or dependent. Be prepared to say why!
3. Make the sentence into a complex sentence (a sentence that combines a dependent clause and an independent clause)
Example
• 1. Clause = She plays guard for the basketball team.
• 2. Independent clause because it’s a complete sentence on its own
