MANNYPACQUIAOYou Can Do it LikeManny Pacquiao!

In the first ever issue of this section, wefeature no less than Manny Pacquaio.Theres hardly any Filipino who does notknow him yet. But beyond being a boxer, theres more to the pound for pound kingand whether you are a Pinoy based in thePhilippines or elsewhere around the world,

you too can do it like Manny Pacquaio!

BackgroundBorn as Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao onDecember 17, 1978, Manny is most widelyknown as a boxer but he is also a politi-cian, recording artist, actor, and TV host. Hewas elected as a congressman representingSaranggani during the May 2010 elections.Under boxing, he is the first to become achampion in eight divisions which includesten world titles and is a lineal champion in

four weight classes. A lineal champion refersto a boxer who has defeated a reigningchampion to steal the championship belt.

Winning and LosingDespite a long list of achievements in theboxing world, Pacquaio had his taste ofboth winning and losing. In fact, his overallrecord is not perfect. His 54 wins with 38

knockouts and 16 decisions are also ac-companied by 5 losses involving 2 decisionsand 3 knockouts at that. There were also 2draws. Of the losses listed, two were of hisrecent fight with Timothy Bradley and JuanManuel Marquez.

But despite his recent defeat, Manny is stillone of the best fighters the world of boxinghas ever known. For Filipinos, he is a mod-ern day hero inspiring aspiring boxers tostrive hard in their chosen career and aimfor national and international recognition inthe boxing world. Even non-boxers find in-spiration not only in his glory days but evenin his defeat. In the eyes of Pinoys, Pac-quiao is still the winner considering the factthat the decisions made in his latest fightswere questionable.

Pacquiao in PoliticsAside from boxing, Pacquaio also lost inpolitics during his first attempt to enter the

scene in 2007 against then representativeDarlene Antonino-Custodio who is now thecurrent mayor of General Santos City eyeingre-election this 2013.Despite his loss, Pacquiao run for the con-gressional race once again in 2010 and won

to represent Saranggani, where his wifeJinkee originated from. Pacquiao is running

again for the May 2013 elections but thistime as a Governor, switching places withcurrent Gov. Miguel Rene Dominguez. Jin-kee is also running as vice-governor whileMannys younger brother Rogelio RoelPacquiao is running for the 1st congressio-nal district of South Cotabato. Unlike boxing

where Pacquaio is challenged often, no oneis opposing him for the governors race thisyear.Pacquaios governance showed nothing butpublic service and zero corruption evenwithin a short span of time during his tenureas congressman.

Pacquaio in theEntertainment WorldEven his entrance to the entertainmentworld had been nothing but inspiring. Someof his notable contributions to this industryinclude the game show Show Me the Mannywhere he helps Pinoys through entertaining

televised games coupled with cash prizes. His latest program called Para Sayo, AngLaban na Ito is an inspirational talk showfeaturing real people who have suffered andyet emerged victorious in their lifes battles.Pacquiao had also sparked the triumphantFilipino spirit through his songs Lahing

Pinoy which cries Pilipino, Pilipino, Pilipinoang lahi ko and Para Sayo Ang Laban Na

To which sings about offering any battlefor the country through Gods help.

Pacquaio the Family ManPacquiaos family life had also been beatenwith challenges involving issues of gam-

bling and womanizing including an allegedinvolvement with a woman who claimed tohave borne a child from Pacquiao as well asthe controversial supposed affair with nowmarried Krista Ranillo when they co-starredin a movie. But all that is now but a memory as Pac-quaio is now an admirable family man.Shortly after the above gossips ceased,Jinkee conceived and gave birth to theiryoungest daughter Queen Elizabeth or

"Queenie. Their other elder children includeEmmanuel Jr. or "Jimuel", Michael, andPrincess.

Pacquaios FaithPacquiao had always been a symbol offaith. In all his televised fights, particu-larly those in Las Vegas, Nevada, hewould normally kneel and say a prayerprior to a bout. Recently, he had renewed

his faith as a Christian and became partof a Protestant church. He had also

ceased gambling and drinking activities aswell as gave up ownership of casinos. Hismother, Dionisia, disapproves of this conver-sion though.

Whichever church he attends, Pacquiaosfaith in God still remains. He attributes his

past winnings to the Almighty and trusts inHis will even after his recent defeat.

You Can Do it TooYou dont have to be a boxer to win battleslike Pacquiao. Neither would you need tobe in politics for public service. You can besuccessful in your own right regardless ofthe type of job you do by winning your ownbattles in the challenges of life through the

help of your family and God.

We all know for a fact that Filipinos arevery passionate about eating. No wall canstop us from eating what we want, whetherthey are healthy or not. Some of the un-

healthy foods that contribute a lot to thedeterioration of health of Filipinos includesinigang, bulalo and lechon. Often, the ef-fect of eating such foods is heart disease. Some of the symptoms of this dreadfuldisease are as follows:

    PalpitationsDizzinessChest painFaintness

    Restlessness Discomfort

Heart disease is very alarming as this maylead to more serious problems or, evenworse, death. However, this may alsobe avoided and relieved in several ways.Check them out.

Maintain a healthy diet.1. As much aspossible, try to consume small amountsof fat and replace them with fiber-rich

foods, such as green leafy vegetables

and lots of fruits. Experts also recom-mend that you go for whole grains andthat you reduce your intake on saltyfoods.

Not all fats are disastrous as there aresome that fall under good fats. Fats

come in two types: unsaturated andsaturated. Between these two, satu-rated fats are the ones that should beavoided, and some foods under thiscategory include:

Processed meatsLardCakesBiscuitsFood with palm oil or coconut oilIce cream

    Whole milkWhipped cream

On the other hand, fish oil, seeds, nuts, avocados and vegetable oils are just fewexamples of unsaturated fats.

Make exercise a habit.2. Most Filipi-nos choose not to engage in physicalactivities, especially those that belongto class C, D and E primarily because

they are already accustomed to a morelax environment and that they are morefocused in earning a living. Whateverclass you belong to, or whatever rea-son you have for not exercising, makesure that your health will not be com-promised. Otherwise, you will have tosuffer the consequences.

In order to achieve a truly healthy body, balanced diet should always be coupledwith regular exercise. By performing

physical activities, you will have a slim

chance of incurring heart disease andother health problems. Regular exer-cise does not necessarily mean thatyou have to enrol in a gym. Walking or

jogging for at least 30 minutes a day isalready enough.

Quit smoking.3. If you are regularlypuffing cigarettes, try quitting as thiscan save your heart as well as your life.Smoking is the primary cause of heartdisease. This does not only attack olderpeople, but also younger generations.

Limit your consumption on alcohol.4.When you finally decide to quit smoking, you should also consider limiting youralcohol intake. By doing so, you willmost likely avoid getting heart disease.

Based on the recommendations, menshould consume a maximum of fourunits a day, and for women, maximumof three. If you are not familiar with theunits of alcohol, here is a guide for you:

    250 ml of beer 1 unit175 ml of wine 2 units25 ml of gin - .9 unit25 ml of vodka - .9 unit25 ml of white rum - .9 unit

25 ml of dark rum 1 unit25 ml of cognac - 1 unit

Regularly monitor your blood pres-5.sure. When you always find your-self munching unhealthy foods, find itimportant to regularly check your bloodpressure. This is one way to detect anyirregularities on your health. If yourblood pressure goes beyond 140/85, im-mediately head straight to the hospital. If hypertension is left unaided, this may

lead to complications, which includesheart ailment.

Control your weight.6. More often thannot, Filipinos who are obese or over-weight have heart problems. The onlyway to resolve weight problems is to ex-ercise. Exercising is the best means tolose fats and achieve a fit body. How-ever, as Ive mentioned earlier, this hasto be combined with balanced diet.

    Regular exercise is, likewise, recom-

mended to those who are diabetic. Byinjecting such activity into your dailyroutine, this can help you control thelevel of blood sugar in your body. Youshould, at least, try to maintain a levelof 130/80 and below.

Take prescribed medicine.7. ManyFilipinos are guilty of self-medicationbecause they are trying to avoid doctorsfee, and this is very perilous. If youwant to relieve the symptoms of heartdisease, strictly take the medicines pre-scribed by your doctor.

    Morrison Hill

A playground in Morrison Hill which is closeto the Queen Elizabeth Stadium on QueensRoad East in Wan Chai displays a markercommemorating Hong Kongs role in themaking of the very first Philippine nationalflag. Although there were several previousflags used prior to the version made in HongKong on May 1898, the current flag resem-ble the design created by Marcela Agoncilloalong with her daughter Lorenza and DelfinaHerbosa Natividad. Marcela is the wife ofFelipe Agoncillo, the first Filipino diplomat

who based then based in HK while Natividadis Jose Rizals niece. The said marker remembering the historicmaking of the Philippine national flag is vis-ible to everyone passing by or playing onthe playground.Jose RizalSpeaking of Jose Rizal, our national herolived in Hong Kong from December 1891 to

June 1892 along with his family who wasforced out of their home town in Calamba,Laguna by the Spanish government at thattime. This historic event is also commemo-rated through a Chinese marker placedwhere Rizal resided and held a clinic in Red-naxella Terrace. Rednaxella is the oppositeof Alexander which was named such due toa Chinese painter who cant read English. The Rednaxella marker is close to OrangeTree Restaurant which is reachable through

the Central Station Exit C of the citys MTR.Just look for the mid-level escalators to getto Rednaxella. The actual clinic was oncelocated close to where Lan Kwai Fong is nowfound.

Another marker is present in CenturySquare where Rizals clinic used to be found. The square can be reached walking downfrom Rednaxella Terrace towards ShelleyStreet and then Hollywood Road going to

    DAguilar Street.

Although the old struc-tures are no longer pres-ent and have alreadybeen replaced by modernbuildings in the area, they

still depict the same oldgranite steps where Rizalonce walked over a cen-tury ago.

Statue SquareThe Statue Square may not be significantwhen it comes to the Philippines historicpast but it is part of our countrys presentheroes. This is where numerous OFWs meetmost especially during their day off. Alreadyaway from home to earn money, a lot ofFilipino overseas workers in HK still engage

in additional side jobs to make more moneysuch as by peddling products, includingPinoy food.

CentralOther tambayan places during day off (Sun-day most often) for OFWs in HK also in-clude Central, Victoria Park, and Hong KongCultural Centre. A lot of them simply gatherto socialize and enjoy a picnic with otherPinoys.

Camiguin, geographically located in North-ern Mindanao, is undoubtedly one of themost spectacular islands in the entire Philip-pines. Island Born of Fire, as it is fondlycalled, is a pear-shaped island lying about100 kilometres of Cagayan de Oro City.Camiguin was formed through land forma-tions and volcanic eruptions, and this is thereason why it was tagged as South EastAsias Hawaii. All in all, it has seven volca-noes, which includes Mt. Hibok-Hibok. Withthis island abundantly blessed with natu-ral beauty and rich history, everyone canclaim that there really is a paradise here onEarths surface.

    Getting There

    By Air1.

When planning to go to Camiguin, you caneither choose to land in Butuan or in Ca-gayan de Oro, although the island has anairport of its own.

Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, Zest Airand Airphil Express have daily flights fromManila to Cagayan de Oro, and back. Inaddition, Cebu Pacific also holds scheduledflights from Davao, Iloilo and Cebu to Ca-gayan de Oro.

From the airport, a van or a cab will takeyou to Agora Market where you will haveto take a bus or a van going to Balingoan, which usually takes about two hours. Oncein Balingoan, get ready to hop on a two-hour ferry ride going to Benoni Port inCamiguin. But if the trips are too much foryou, you actually have the option to rideon Paras Sea Cat. This sea vessel departsregularly from Macabalan Port in Cagayan

    except on Thursdays.

On the other hand, Philip-pine Airlines offer daily flights from Manilato Cagayan de Oro and vice versa. As forCebu Pacific, they fly daily from Manila andCebu. From the airport, take a bus that isbound to Cagayan de Oro. After which, stopat Balingoan Port and then ride on a ferry

    going to Camiguin.

    By Land/Water2.

For those who cant afford a plane ticket go-ing Camiguin, riding a bus, specifically Phil-tranco Bus, from Manila to Cagayan de Orois a much cheaper option. This will take youabout 42 hours. It is truly a lot cheaper, butfar exhausting.

Negros Navigation and SuperFerryare sea vesselsthat can bring youcloser to Camiguin. They both haveports in Nasipit inButuan and also inCagayan de Oro.

    Attractions

When in Camiguin, you will never run out ofactivities and places to visit as well. Cleanse

Perfect Combination of Dietary Fibers for a Healthy Colon!

About 80 percent of the food we take each day consists of meet processed food, which contain

little or no fiber content. Fiber, found in vegetables, fruits, cereals and grains such as brown rice, is

very important for regular bowel movements and digestive health.

Cleanse has the perfect combination of fibers to supplement your diet. It contains insoluble fibers,

which acts like a broom to clean out the waste stuck to the walls of the colon, making excre-

ment sparse and not so sticky, and helps pre-booties and pro-booties to function more efficiency.

Cleanse also contains soluble fibers that help bind toxins together for removal through excretion

    and reducing its re-absorption.

Psyllium Husk seed expandsand is soluble in water. However, it

is not broken down when passed

    through the gastrointestinal track,

thus providing a rich source of fiber.

The SOLUBLE fiber also reduces the

    absorption of blood cholesterol and

bile acids from the intestine. Aids in

dieting as it gives a full feeling when

    expanded.

Apple Fiber/Pectin helps maintainintestinal balance by cleansing the

intestinal tract with its soluble and

    insoluble fibers. Researchers at the

    University of California, Davis, found

that apple pectin also acts as an

    ANTIOXIDANT against the damaging

portion of cholesterol in the blood

    stream. Research in Japan supports

that apple pectin can also decrease

    the chances of colon cancer.

Oil Palm Fiberis an insoluble fiber

which will clean all food scraps along

our intestine and colon. It helps to

improve the efficiency of the digestive

system to absorb more nutrients into

    our body.

    Mixed Vegetable Powderfrom

spinach, celery, cabbage, peas, wheat grass, etc. Are food for good

many other health benefits such as

    anti-osteoporotic, anti-carcinogenic

    properties.

Filipinos are eligible to vote this year. Thisnumber represents about 70% of Filipinosliving and working in Hong Kong. All in all,

there are 988,384 voters for the 2013 OAVin various cities worldwide. This includes398,554 new registrants and 589,830 previ-ously registered voters.

    High Tech Voting

If you believe that employing PCOS ma-chines is advanced enough, wait till youhear about proposed additional means to

vote. Email voting may be allowed par-ticularly for seafarers, who make up about500,000 of the total number of OAV regis-trants and are more often than not out inthe open seas. This hinders them from vot-ing in their respective consulates.

This possible provision is in connection toSenate Bill 2401 filed by Senator RamonBong Revilla Jr. which aims to take advan-tage of modern means for accepting andtransmitting votes including technology such

as the Internet. This bill intends to amend

to the Commission on Elections or ComelecCommissioner Lucenito Tagle, other OAVlocations with possible automation will

include Singapore, Kuwait, Dubai as well asAbu Dhabi in U.A.E., and Jeddah as well asRiyadh in KSA aside from Hong Kong.

    OAV Registrants

Of the aforementioned cities, Hong Kongrecords the highest number of registrants at101,482. The rest of the participating citiesrecord the following turnout of voters who

    registered:

There were 19,733 newly added OAV reg-istrants in HK. Along with 95,355 partici-pants during the 2010 elections, the Philip-

    Poll Inspectors

Going back to Hong Kong, the Commissionon Elections and the Philippine ConsulateGeneral recently opened doors for Pinoysin this side of the world to volunteer as pollinspectors. The application ended earlierthis month.

    List of Candidates

The Comelec website lists all senatorial can-didates and party list groups in alphabetical

order. There are 33 senatorial bets while123 party lists groups are included. Most ofthe names may already be familiar due totheir campaign efforts on TV, radio, printedpublications, and even online.

    How to Choose a Candidate

Considering the fact that there are numer-ous candidates to choose from, it will be

challenging to select actual candidates tovote for. In relation to this, here are usefulguidelines which will make it easier for youto decide.

Be active online, especially social media. The web offers research opportunities. Youget to know candidates and their politi-

cal platform by browsing through variousplaces over the web including news portals, websites, blogs, forums, and social medianetworks. If you are not fond of research, you can always chat with family, relatives, friends, and colleagues to be informedabout the election campaign scene in the

    Philippines.

Speaking of people you know, let them beyour guide when selecting candidates tovote for. Although there are other meansto get to know candidates such as over theweb, on TV or radio via Filipino channels, and even through publications, nothingbeats first hand information about candi-dates from your kin and acquaintances thatare based in the Philippines. But dont letthem literally dictate every name you will

decide to vote. Heed their suggestions butvote based on your personal decision.

Also, dont be fooled with empty promises. Its best to track an incumbent or return-ing candidates record of accomplishmentsduring their previous term. For newcomerson the other hand, find out what they haveaccomplished in the previous job or industrythey were formerly a part of. Likewise, dont

just settle for popular personalities. Being

well known doesnt guarantee good publicservice. Again, review what they have ac-complished so far.

Lastly, decline vote buyers. There is a Fili-pino quote regarding this saying, tanggapinang pera, iboto ang kursunada. It maysound right considering the fact that you are

    24/32

still able to vote whom you have chosen andearn money from candidates offering bribesbut the price of your dignity can never beregained once you lose it over a meagersum or in exchange of a favor.

Preparation for the ElectionThe duration of the OAV lasts for an entiremonth so you have ample time to make ar-rangements for a day off in case its need-ed. Voting will not consume an entire dayor even half at that so theres no need toworry about work responsibilities. You canhead back to work as soon as youve com-pleted the voting process. Not unless youdont reside anywhere close. Lastly, bringonly whats needed and leave everything

unnecessary to avoid distractions when youvote.

The tips above apply not only forOAV participants in HK but else-where around the world. To makeOAV successful, everyone should

take part in ensuring that an or-ganized and orderly election isachieved.

land?Spirituality is the consciousness of oneselfand knowing the reality of the inside self.Your inside self is your spiritual aspect.

How to make your spirituality strong?Looking on all people around you everyday, you can see a busy life in their careers, families and businesses. But, how about thespiritual aspects of these people? They justlearn to work for a living and gather much

Peoples outlookwill change especially when they work inforeign places and somehow the customsand traditions are forgotten as they livelonger away from home.

He is the supremebeing and the author of life who has a greatplan that is prepared for you. Building astrong spirituality is the access to makeyour life easier, balance and fruitful. Wedding KnPlanning and Preparation:It was February 2006 when I asked myboyfriend to marry me over the phone. He

just returned to the Philippines from SouthKorea and I was working in Dubai, UnitedArab Emirates. We agreed to spend onlyfifty thousand pesos for the wedding.

With this cost constraint, it was a challenge

to convince him to go for a destinationwedding, which I really wanted. Decidingfirst on the budget made our planningsimpler because with that amount we couldonly afford one destination for our wedding, which was in Hong Kong.Next thing to plan was the airfare for our

closest family members who will travel fromManila to Hong Kong. Using booking online,we were able to avail the P1 peso promofare offered by Cebu Pacific so we basicallypaid only for the tax and surcharge.

Next in the list was the accommodation. Iwas fortunate that my Aunt in Hong Konghad rented out to us two rooms in herapartment rental in Wan Chai for $250 HKD

which was way cheaper than a hotel. If youdont have any relatives or friends in HongKong, you can check out for budget hostelsand guest houses online to get a good price.Doing online research diligently will allowyou to stretch the elasticity of your wallet atthe maximum.
