Classifying Vertebrates

Classifying FishUnderstanding the Classification of Fish and the Vertebrate Animal Kingdom1Audience: This stand-alone PowerPoint is intended for 6th grade students studying the animal kingdom.

Instructional Objectives: The objective of the stand-alone PowerPoint is to reinforce concepts previously taught in class. The students have been studying the five groups of vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals). Using what the students have learned in class, they should be able to classify a given vertebrate, using a photograph and/or characteristics, into one of the five groups.Jawless Fish

Jawless fish have a round mouth, tube like body, single fins, no scales, and a skeleton made of cartilage.

FishThe Water DwellersMost fish are cold blooded vertebrates that live in water. Scientists believe that fish were the only vertebrates on Earth for about 150 million years.

Scientists classify fish living today into three classes.Correct!

The Sea Lamprey is a jawless fish that inhabits the Great Lakes region.

8When a student gets an answer correct they will hear cheers and fireworks!Organization of Vertebrates The vertebrates of the animal kingdom are divided into five main groups. Choose one of the three groups that are cold blooded to learn more about them.1. Fish2. Amphibians3. Reptiles

3Backgrounds: Each group of vertebrate slides have different backgrounds. The intent of this is to help the user understand when they have left one group of vertebrates and started another. For example, the fish all have water droplets as a background.

Active Response: In order for the learner to demonstrate an understanding of the objective being taught, they will have to compare and classify a vertebrate animal into one of the five major groups. The students will be given a photograph and/or characteristic of the animal that would indicate the appropriate group it belongs in. IncorrectThe Tuna is a bony fish. Bony fish have scales, well-developed sense organs, fins, and skeletons made of bone.

10When a student gets an answer incorrect they will hear the painful scream of a man. Since the PowerPoint is intended for middle school students, I feel that they will see the humor in this. They will also be given an explanation for why their choice was incorrect and be required to try again.

IncorrectThe shark is a cartilage fish. Unlike the jawless fish, the cartilage fish have movable jaws, scales, paired fins, and skeletons made of cartilage.
