Classics at University

Classical Studies will be of immense benefit to students at

virtually any faculty of a modern university. In particular,

students who intend to study at the following faculties

will reap enormous rewards by doing Classical Studies at

Junior College:

Faculty of Arts

Faculty of Laws

Faculty of Medicine & Surgery

Faculty of Theology

Knowing some Latin and Greek is a great advantage for

anyone intending to study at a foreign university since

most European and American universities value highly the

qualities acquired by students of the Classics. Although

knowledge of Latin and Greek is growing rapidly once

more, it is still an option rare enough for universities to

give special credit to applicants who have such a qualifica-

tion

In the Modern World

Linguistic, analytical and humanistic training acquired by a

study of Classics is especially useful for the rapid acquisi-

tion of languages, for abstract and analytical thought so

useful for mathematics and other sciences including com-

puter programming and for literary and artistic work.

The great achieve-

ments of Classical

Greece and Rome are

so important that they

form the basis of most

subsequent human

achievements. Such

inventions include: the

basis of modern archi-

tecture, art & medi-

c ine , computers ,

robots, concrete,

steam engines, central

heating, schools, uni-

versities, athletics and

many other things that

we now take for granted in the world today. With-

out the knowledge of the Greeks and the Romans

the world today would be completely different.

Knowledge of the Classical world has long been

lost in Malta. For this reason, the Malta Classics

Association has put together a syllabus, Classical

Studies, at Intermediate level for students at Junior

College. The goal of this syllabus is:

• To introduce the students to the elements of

Latin & Greek grammar.

• To improve their knowledge of English grammar.

• To impart an ability to read basic Latin and

Greek

• To impart a knowledge of the Classical world in

its cultural context, including mythology, philoso-

phy, art, history and literature.
