Looking at MedeaEdited by David StuttardEuripides' Medea is one of the most often read, studied and performed of all Greek tragedies. It is unusual among Greek dramas for its acute portrayal of female psychology. The play is a product of the

political and social world of fi fth-century Athens and an understanding of its original context, as well as a consideration of the responses of later ages, is crucial to appreciating this work and its legacy. This collection of essays by leading academics addresses these issues, exploring key themes such as revenge, character, mythology, the end of the play, the chorus and Medea's role as a witch. Other essays look at the play's context, religious connotations, stagecraft and reception. The essays are accompanied by David Stuttard's English translation of the play.

DAVID STUTTARD is founder of the theatre company, Actors of Dionysus, translator of numerous Greek plays, and author of titles including Parthenon, Power and Politics on the Acropolis (2013), Looking at Lysistrata (Bloomsbury, 2010) and The Romans Who Shaped Britain (2012).

Symphosius The AenigmataAn Introduction, Text and Commentary

T.J. LearyThe post-classical compilation known to modern scholarship as the Latin

Anthology contains a collection of a hundred riddles, each consisting of three hexameters and preceded by a lemma. It would seem that these riddles were composed spontaneously at a dinner to celebrate the Roman Saturnalia. The work was to have a defi ning infl uence on later collections of riddles; yet its title has been debated, and almost nothing is known about its author.

This edition of the riddles includes the original Latin text, a new English translation, in-depth commentary notes and a comprehensive introduction, and examines more fully than before the sociological, archaeological and literary background of the riddles.

The Lives of the Greek PoetsMary R. LefkowitzWith little or no independent historical information to draw on, ancient writers searched for biographical data in the poets' own works and in comic poetry about them. Lefkowitz describes how biographical mythology was created and offers a sympathetic account of how individual biographers reconstructed the poets' lives. She argues that the life stories of Greek poets,

even though primarily fi ctional, still merit close consideration, as they provide modern readers with insight into ancient notions about the creative process and the purpose of poetic composition.

MARY R. LEFKOWITZ is Mellon Professor in the Humanities, Emerita, Wellesley College, Massachusetts, USA, and the author of Women in Greek Myth, First-Person Fictions, Not Out of Africa, and Greek Gods, Human Lives. She is co-editor of Women's Life in Greece and Rome and Black Athena Revisited.

Ovid UnseensPractice Passages for Latin Verse Translation and Comprehension

Mathew OwenOvid Unseens provides a bank of 80 practice passages of Latin verse, half elegiac and half hexameter. Taken from across Ovid’s works, including the Metamorphoses, Fasti, Heroides, Amores and Tristia, the passages help build students' knowledge and

confi dence in a notoriously diffi cult element of Latin language learning. Every passage begins with an introduction, outlining the basic story/theme, followed by a 'lead-in' and the volume also includes a full guide to scansion and a vocabulary list. Broken down into small ‘checklists’, each corresponding to a group of four passages, the vocabulary is learnt cumulatively and as it is encountered.

The Ancient Commentators on Aristotle: Now in Paperback and Library eBookGeneral Editor: Richard Sorabji, Honorary Fellow, Wolfson College, Oxford; Emeritus Professor, King's College, London, UKThis prestigious series translates the extant ancient Greek philosophical commentaries on Aristotle. Written mostly between 200 and 600AD, the works represent the classroom teaching of the Aristotelian and Neoplatonic schools in a crucial period during which pagan and Christian thought were reacting to each other. The translation in each volume is accompanied by an introduction, comprehensive commentary notes, bibliography, glossary of translated terms and a subject index. Making these key philosophical works accessible to the modern scholar, this series fills an important gap in the history of European thought.

“A truly breathtaking achievement, with few parallels in the history of scholarly endeavour.” Times Literary Supplement

From April 2014 in the UK and the US, the series will be available to purchase in paperback and Library eBook format.
