CLASSICAL COLUMNS Classical School Appleton, Wisconsin Building a Just and Excellent Educational Foundation April 3, 2017 Principal’s Address~ Hello Classical Families and Friends, On Friday March 17th, while the wider Wisconsin community focused its attentions and celebrations on St. Patrick’s Day and the March Madness of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, our Classical School students and staff began their yearly KAT season with a traditional KAT Kickoff in our school’s forum involving all of students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Undoubtedly the Classical Knowledge-A-Thon (KAT) will never gain the press and prestige associated with these other national events; however, within the confines of our school’s walls, KAT is king for the next month until our KAT Day on Friday, April 21. Over sixty volunteers led by our KAT coordinator, Sheri Hartzheim, provide fun weekly events such as KAT Star Week, KAT Lottery Lollaplooza, KAT Bonanza and KAT Spirt week that all lead to the culminating KAT Dress-up Day when our 477 students are all individually quizzed on their grade level KAT questions. What is KAT? Knowledge-A-Thon - commonly referred to as “KAT”-- is our school’s chief fundraiser generating upwards of $20,000 to meet the wide-ranging needs of our students and classrooms. Each student is given a list of one hundred questions and answers related to our Core Knowledge curriculum that will be taught or has already been taught this school year. Students study with their teachers and parents to prepare for KAT Day while collecting pledges from their families. For instance, let’s say Aunt Betty offers her niece a per question pledge of $.50. Her niece will be asked 100 questions on KAT Day. If her niece gets 95 answers correct, her Aunt Betty will donate $47.50 (.5 x 95) to our school. Also, anyone can choose to give a straight dollar amount instead of a per question pledge. Unlike many other potential school fundraisers involving selling products or coupons, KAT is a low cost, high profit fundraiser that promotes our curriculum and guarantees that 100% of what students earn goes directly to Classical School. Is there an easy way to study for KAT? Certainly, studying for KAT can be accomplished using many different methods. I thought that I would answer this question by sharing my personal experience. As a parent, I have associated this time of year with studying with my children for KAT and studying these questions gives us an opportunity for a positive bonding experience. I usually go through the entire list of 100 questions during the first few days that the packet is distributed. I ask my child each question and cross out the number in front of any question/answer that my child already knows. In this way, we can focus on the more difficult questions for the remainder of the month. The next time that I ask my child these harder questions, I will either place a checkmark (correct) or a tally mark (incorrect) next to each of the questions. Any answer that is hard to remember, I try to create a funny word play or mnemonic device to aid in learning the answer.

CLASSICAL COLUMNS Classical School – Appleton, Wisconsin

Building a Just and Excellent Educational Foundation April 3, 2017

Principal’s Address~

Hello Classical Families and Friends,

On Friday March 17th, while the wider Wisconsin community focused its attentions and

celebrations on St. Patrick’s Day and the March Madness of the NCAA Basketball Tournament,

our Classical School students and staff began their yearly KAT season with a traditional KAT

Kickoff in our school’s forum involving all of students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Undoubtedly the Classical Knowledge-A-Thon (KAT) will never gain the press and prestige associated with

these other national events; however, within the confines of our school’s walls, KAT is king for the next month

until our KAT Day on Friday, April 21. Over sixty volunteers led by our KAT coordinator, Sheri Hartzheim,

provide fun weekly events such as KAT Star Week, KAT Lottery Lollaplooza, KAT Bonanza and KAT Spirt

week that all lead to the culminating KAT Dress-up Day when our 477 students are all individually quizzed on

their grade level KAT questions.

What is KAT?

Knowledge-A-Thon - commonly referred to as “KAT”-- is our school’s chief fundraiser – generating upwards

of $20,000 to meet the wide-ranging needs of our students and classrooms. Each student is given a list of one

hundred questions and answers related to our Core Knowledge curriculum that will be taught – or has already

been taught – this school year. Students study with their teachers and parents to prepare for KAT Day while

collecting pledges from their families. For instance, let’s say Aunt Betty offers her niece a per question pledge

of $.50. Her niece will be asked 100 questions on KAT Day. If her niece gets 95 answers correct, her Aunt

Betty will donate $47.50 (.5 x 95) to our school. Also, anyone can choose to give a straight dollar amount

instead of a per question pledge. Unlike many other potential school fundraisers involving selling products or

coupons, KAT is a low cost, high profit fundraiser that promotes our curriculum and guarantees that 100% of

what students earn goes directly to Classical School.

Is there an easy way to study for KAT? Certainly, studying for KAT can be accomplished using many different methods. I thought that I would answer

this question by sharing my personal experience. As a parent, I have associated this time of year with studying

with my children for KAT and studying these questions gives us an opportunity for a positive bonding

experience. I usually go through the entire list of 100 questions during the first few days that the packet is

distributed. I ask my child each question and cross out the number in front of any question/answer that my child

already knows. In this way, we can focus on the more difficult questions for the remainder of the month. The

next time that I ask my child these harder questions, I will either place a checkmark (correct) or a tally mark

(incorrect) next to each of the questions. Any answer that is hard to remember, I try to create a funny word play

or mnemonic device to aid in learning the answer.

Page 2: Classical School Appleton, Wisconsin

For instance if the following question was hard for my child… Q: Name each of the five kingdoms of living

things. A: Plant, Animal, Fungus, Protist, Moneran. I might make something up like… The kingdom’s

plants and animals always had fun protests about money to remind her of the five kingdoms.

When my child answers the question correctly three times, I will no longer ask that particular question. In this

way, we slowly reduce the number of difficult questions and have a continuing feeling of accomplishment.

During the final few days before KAT Day, I’ll ask all of the questions again to see if any of the answers needs

a bit more polishing.

What will be done with the KAT Funds? The KAT Funds are used to meet the needs of our students. First, we are planning on updating and providing

technology in the form of Smartboards for many of our classrooms and at least two classroom sets of interactive

devices. We are also committed to purchasing science equipment for our Middle School program so that our 7th

and 8th grade students will have a fully equipped Science Lab. Finally, any additional monies will help to

purchase musical instruments, specialized whiteboards for our music rooms, playground equipment; as well as

fund our informational video campaigns, and other general budgetary needs that directly support student

learning.

Thank you for supporting your child and Classical School during KAT season!

Warmly,

Mr. Thomas L. Bomann

Interim Principal of Classical School

Notes from the CCSA Board~

Educational Program Committee Update: Writing

The writing committee has been working diligently since September to improve the writing curriculum at

Classical School. This is a large task, which may or may not include deciding upon a new curriculum. It was

decided in September that before the committee could begin to evaluate the program, we needed to know what

exactly is being taught about writing at each grade level.

The committee decided to focus on two areas. The first area of focus was “expectations,” which we defined as

the concepts teachers expect the students to know when they begin the grade. The second area of focus was

“emphasis,” which we defined as the concepts we teach during the year at each grade level.

As a committee, we have already worked through grades Kindergarten through the middle of sixth grade. In the

upcoming months, we will be finishing the expectations and emphasis through eighth grade. Once that is

completed, we will be looking for overlapping concepts, growth from grade to grade, and eventually

supplementing curriculum if necessary.

Wisconsin Forward Exam Grades 3-8

The spring state testing window opened for 3rd-8th graders starting the week of

March 20th. This is the second year Wisconsin is administering the Forward Exam.

This test replaces the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam which had been

Wisconsin’s main accountability test for many years.

We recommend that students try the practice test that is available online to familiarize themselves with

the format of the test questions. We are providing you with the direct link to the practice test below,

but you may also read more about the Forward Exam through the Wisconsin DPI website.

Practice Test: https://wbte.drcedirect.com/WI/portals/wi

As with the WKCE, students in grades 3-8th will be tested in ELA (reading & writing) and math.

Students in grades 4 & 8 will also be tested in science and social studies. Testing will occur at each

grade level over several days between March 20th-May 5th.

Please take special notice of when your child’s class will be testing!

The school-wide testing schedule was sent home in the Pegasus Flyers and is attached to the end of this

publication. Please note that make-up testing is hard on students as they miss regular classroom

instruction and are responsible for the curriculum they missed. Please avoid making appointments during

testing.

Thank you for not taking your child out of school when their class is testing!

Fine Arts Night Please join us for our 5th Annual Fine Arts Night on Thursday, May 4th from

6:00-7:30 in the Forum. Every student at Classical will have a piece in the

show!

Volunteers Needed! We need as many volunteers as possible to help hang art work after school on

Wednesday, May 3rd, and help take the work down Friday morning, May 5th,

after the show. Fine Arts Night set-up is a good opportunity for parents

who work during the day to get some volunteer hours in after school.

Email Jenny Eastman at [email protected] if you are able to help!

on the playground during lunch recess and earn small treats for correct answers.

The kids LOVE this event!

Bonanza is a fun way to reward the students for all of their hard work and efforts in learning their

Knowledge-A-Thon questions. Young students really enjoy seeing their parents involved with other

students in a fun environment!

A HUGE thank you goes out to Annie Knudson for offering to coodinate Bonanza this year! Annie is a

parent of a kindergartener, so she is learning the ropes and has offered

to jump right in!

Please contact her if you can donate a half hour of your time to assist in

asking KAT questions to our wonderful students on the playground

during recess. Contact Annie at [email protected].

We Need Cascarones! Cinco de mayo will be here before we know it. The Spanish classes at Classical School

celebrate with traditional cascarones. Cascarones are empty eggshells that are filled

with confetti. Confetti must be biodegradable (from paper only). We want to give

families lots of time to save eggshells in advance for this celebration.

The best strategy is to break a one-inch whole or larger in the egg and

use it as you normally would. Rinse the eggshell, turn it upside down, and

let it dry. When the eggshells have dried, put a small amount of

confetti in each one and cover the hole with tissue paper. We hope with

this advance notice, you will be able to do them as you use eggs rather

than wasting them to make the cascarones.

Please bring your cascarones to school by Monday, May 1st! The Spanish teachers would like to thank

you in advance for saving eggshells and for all that you do to support our school!

school’s site under “News” or by going to www.aasd.k12.wi.us/leap.

There’s Still Time to Sign Up for Summer School!

NEWSWORTHY ODDS AND ENDS…

Ron Dunlap Student Success Award Three Classical students, Anya, Adam, and Danielle, received the Ron Dunlap Student Success

Award. For the past 8 years, this award is given to students at an all-district event titled Celebrating

Student Success: A Community Gathering.

This award is given in recognition of academic excellence, leadership, character, resilience, and work

ethic. Three students from each AASD school are chosen through teacher and principal

recommendation.

The Helen & Ade Dillon Award

This award recognizes an AASD staff member who encourages a balanced life

for students through excellence in education and involvement in student

activities outside of the classroom. This staff member takes a personal

interest in students’ moral, mental, and physical development, thereby

enhancing students’ life skills for continued development of academics, fitness

and citizenship. This individual will have successfully completed a minimum of

five years employment with the Appleton Area School District. One unrestricted cash award of $1,000

will be presented to a recipient at the Appleton Area School District All Staff Gathering at the

beginning of the school year.

Nomination forms can be found outside the Classical School office. Nominations for this award must

be received by Ruth Woelfel in the AASD School Services’ Office at the Scullen Leadership Center no

later than June 15th. Any district employee, student, parent or community member may nominate an

AASD staff member.

Mielke Educator of the Year Award Since 1983, outstanding AASD educators have been recognized through the

Mielke Educator of the Year Awards. Isn’t there someone you have worked with

who you believe should be nominated for this award? To nominate an educator

does take time and effort. The committee will want to know the nominee’s

biography, his/her philosophy, and asks for letters of recommendation. However,

when all the information is completed and placed in a binder, it becomes a tribute of the nominee’s

contributions to education and can be a keepsake of their AASD career.

The Mielke Foundation has designated two categories for this prestigious award: Elementary and

Secondary Level. School staff, parents, students, or community members may generate nominations. *If you are interested in nominating a teacher or other staff member, you can find the nomination

information and forms outside the Classical School office. Deadline: June 15th*

NEWSWORTHY ODDS AND ENDS… Darth VanRyzin and the Classical Staff come together to kick off KAT

Knowledge-A-Thon began on Friday, March 17th!

The program began with a PowerShow presentation of all the creative KAT posters submitted for the KAT Poster

Contest. Classical parent volunteer & KAT Coordinator, Sheri Hartzheim, ran our poster contest two weeks prior

to the kick-off and photographed each poster to be entered into a musical PowerPoint presentation.

What a wonderful show of creativity by many students. Congratulations to all of the Poster Contest Winners!

Members of the Classical staff performed a motivational KAT skit based VERY loosely on a Star Wars theme.

Thank you to all staff members who wrote and performed the skit!

From the School Nurse… ATTENTION 5th GRADE PARENTS New Immunization Requirement!

For those of you already arranging your child’s summer doctor appointments, please be reminded that

ALL students are required to receive a Tdap vaccination upon entrance to 6th grade. If your child has

not yet received his/her Tdap, please make arrangements for your child to receive this vaccination

PRIOR to the start of 6th grade. Community healthcare providers are typically very busy in the weeks

leading to the start of fall classes, so you are encouraged to have your child immunized well in advance of

school beginning.

If you do not wish to have your child immunized, you are required to sign a waiver. The waiver option is

located on the bottom half of the immunization form. These forms are available from the District

website (aasd.k12.wi.us) or from the elementary school office.

If you need assistance or have any questions, please contact Debbie Olson, RN at 920.419.7302 or

[email protected] . Thank you for your prompt attention to this requirement.

Volunteer Appreciation…

Thank you Parents of Classical School Forensics Participants!

Classical School students participated in the Level I and Level II Forensics Festival at Little Chute Middle School

on Saturday, February 4 and Saturday, February 25. We are proud to announce that almost all 42 Classical School

participants received a first and blue ribbons! The students have practiced diligently over the past five months and

it certainly paid off.

We would also like to take the time to thank the parents and families for your support of Classical School

Forensics. Some of you hosted group practices at your homes, which definitely made a difference in the students’

performances. Many of you came to support your students on the Saturday meets and watched them

perform. Your support is greatly appreciated. We also had several parents volunteer to be judges during our

practice meet and both leveled meets; our students would not have been allowed to participate had you not given of

your time so charitably. Thank you again and we look forward to seeing our returning students again next year in

Forensics! ~Mrs. Crownhart and Mrs. VanRyzin

Thank you Parent Ski Club Volunteers!

The Ski Club has had a great season! I wanted to send a special thank you to the parent volunteers for

the hard work they put in on these trips.

I thank you because…

You made arrangements to leave your own personal responsibilities in order to be at Classical School by 2:25pm to help

get the students ready for the ski trips

You have monitored the hallways, bathrooms, and Forum while students were getting ready for the trips

You have taken attendance several times to account for all students’ whereabouts

You have ridden on the busses with 51 enthusiastic teenagers—a feat in itself

You have lingered in the rental area to assist students struggling with the order of operations

You have successfully jammed students’ feet into ski boots

You have taken lessons, lessons many of you did not need, to put anxious students at ease

You have ridden the ski lifts with students who have lost their groups

You have helped locate students when getting ready to leave the ski hill for the night

You have checked over the busses to make sure no one left anything in haste

You have stayed behind at school to make sure all students have a ride home

You have stayed up until 11:30pm on a Friday night with 51 middle schoolers!

Thank you!! These trips could not possibly run without the help of these brave individuals and I am forever grateful!

~Mrs. Crownhart

Volunteer Appreciation…

Thank you to the many volunteers who give their time to Classical!

Thank you for the conference night dinners! The Classical teachers are very

grateful for the meals that were provided during spring conferences. Thank

you volunteer parent staff appreciation coordinator, Carli McDougal and her

crew of helpers, for planning and providing these meals for us! We know we

are so fortunate to have an outstanding parent base supporting us.

Thank you to all the parents who provided treats for the March staff meeting! It’s

really nice to receive that little “extra” at the end of the day.

Thank you Sheri Hartzheim, Michal Slovick, Heather Hayes, Annie Knudson, and all the

Knowledge-A-Thon volunteers, for all you are doing to organize and execute this year’s

KAT activities including our recent Poster Contest, KAT Kick-off, and Star Week. We

know KAT takes a considerable amount of prep time and coordination.

We truly appreciate everything you are doing!

Thank you to all parents that have donated gift cards and prizes for our motivational activities
