Transit Hitch Mounting
HITCH MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FORD TRANSIT CUTAWAY AND CAB CHASSIS WITH AN 82 ½” CA
PAGE 1 OF 1 REV 04-21-2015 EMG
This instruction outlines the procedure for installing P/N 14900371, a Class III towing hitch specifically designed for Reading’s Classic Service Van (CSV) mounted to a Ford Transit Cut-Away or Cab Chassis. The installation of this hitch can be done prior to or after mounting the body to the chassis. This mounting instruction depicts the mounting of the hitch prior to mounting the body to the chassis.
1. Loosely install the rear bumper brackets onto the chassis frame using hardware kit part number
14520006. Ensure that one (1) flat washer is used under the bolt head and one (1) flat washer and one
(1) split lock washer is used under the hex nut. The hitch is to be installed between the two (2) chassis
extension plates. See Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 1 Figure 2
2. After the body is mounted to the chassis, adjust the slotted bumper brackets such that the upper-most
flange is flush with the rear cross member mounting channel. A spacer washer, not supplied, may be
used to minimize any gap between the channel and flange. Affix bumper bracket to flange using
hardware kit part number 14520006. Torque all bolts that mount the bumper bracket to the rear cross
member mounting channel.
Note: If the hitch is being installed after the body is mounted, remove the eight (8) chassis mounting nuts, washers and lock washers and install the hitch between the chassis extension plates as stated above. It is recommended that the 90mm long bolts not be removed during this process to ensure that the bumper brackets remain aligned with the chassis extension plates. The four (4) bolts that affix the bumper bracket to the rear body cross-member do not need to be removed, loosened or adjusted during this process.
3. Level the hitch with the body using a jack and torque all remaining bumper bracket bolts.
4. Install the P83 bumper, sold separately, using hardware kit part number 14520006. Adjust and level the
bumper as necessary. Add spacer washers, not supplied, such that the gap between the body and
bumper is approximately 1/2”.
Note: The 2” receiver tube on the hitch will be recessed by approximately 1/8” with the face of the P83 bumper when installed on a Cut-Away chassis and will be recessed approximately 1-5/8” when installed on a Cab Chassis.
5. After final alignment a trailer plug can be installed to the P83 bumper, items sold separately. Modifications to thehitch are not recommended and may affect the rated capacities.
Note: Consult the vehicle owner’s manual before towing. Do not exceed the vehicle, towing or hitch ratings.
This instruction was prepared in accordance with the latest available information from Ford Motor Company. Prior to the installation of any Reading Truck Body supplied accessory the installer should familiarize themselves with the current revision of the Body Builder’s Layout Book, Incomplete Vehicle Manual and any other pertinent information provided by Ford Motor Company.
