Chairman’s Chatter

It's that time of year again where people tend to go overboard with the credit card but I guess

I'm from the old school; I never had a credit card and if I didn't have the money I went without.

Well its AGM time and we are trying to find members willing to serve on the committee. I found

that the only way to meet members is to get involved with whatever is going on at the club, be it

breakfast runs, Last Friday Braai, helping out at work parties, etc. I have served on various

positions on the committee for the past 30 years and have made some very good friends, so

what I am saying is get actively involved.

On a sadder note our condolences go to Karl Jensen and his family on the passing of his wife

Shirley. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Karl.

In a lighter vein I would like to wish all our members and their families a Merry Christmas and a

Happy New Year.

Rod Thomas

Appointment of CMCN committee members for 2015.

The current committee believes strongly that it’s time to bring in some new blood into the

administrative side of our clubs committee.

We are therefore calling for nominations from our members for the following positions for 2015.

1. Chairman

2. Vice Chairman

3. Club house manager

4. Treasurer

5. Secretary

6. Regalia officer

7. Clerk of the course

8. Editor

We would greatly appreciate any nominations before 31st October, 2014.

Announcements:

The CMCN Newsletter: ShopTorque

We have had a number of queries of late regarding the ShopTorque. We hope that this note

clarifies the situation.

As many will recall at our December 2012 AGM it was proposed that the club reduce the

number of prints and postage of our newsletter. It was suggested that all those who had access

to the internet could read and download the ShopTorque on the clubs’ web site

www.ncmc.org.za One of the advantages would be seeing all photos etc. in colour. It was

calculated that the cost reduction on printing and postage would amount to a substantial saving

to the club and for that reason the annual subs were not increased. It was recognised that some

members do not have access to the internet and they would continue to get their hard copy in

black and white as usual either by collection at the monthly meetings or by post.

Sadly, in spite of this approach the number of copies printed and posted continued as in the

past. At the December 2013 AGM the issue was again tabled. It was suggested that those

members who wished to continue getting their ShopTorque in hard copy and posted would pay

an additional R60 on top of the annual subs.

It is worth noting that all clubs are facing the same pressures on reducing costs and as a last

resort many published their newsletters through the internet. In fact one of the bigger car clubs

in the Durban area is charging an additional R200 on top of their annual subs for those wishing

to continue getting a black and white print copy of their newsletter by post.

For 2014 each member must decide if they want to continue getting their ShopTorque as in print

in the post in which case they will be charged the additional R60 p/a.

Kind Regards, Your CMCN committee

More on Hans Coertze and winning The Cannonball Run

Hans will give a rundown on his achievement, as the winner of the Cannonball Run, and this (I

am sure will be extremely interesting) presentation will take place on Saturday the 13th

December @ 3 pm.

The venue will be The Car Barn, which is a private museum mainly for Jaguars, and is owned

by Keith De Klerk.

As this is the same day for the VSCC "Bonnets Up" my suggestion is for all the Durban guys to

come up to the VSCC and enjoy the first part of the afternoon. Thereafter we can ride or drive to

Keith's Pub & Tea Room/Museum, which is located between Bishopstowe & Ashburton.

Please note there is about 500 metres of good dirt road, just before Keith's home. It would be

great if as many Bikes as possible can come, seeing as this is a biking occasion. Keith has

mentioned that he will make space inside the main Hall for all the bikes.

The Club’s bike trailer

Since the Alberda’s have left for the land of fish & chips and 9-month winters, Winston De Kock

has now taken over as custodian of the CMCN’s bike trailer. Should you want to borrow the

trailer please arrange this with Winston. He can be contacted on 031-466-4890 or 072-246-

5214. There is no charge but a donation is in order.

Looking for that elusive part to finish off that restoration? Have it made for you!

This has landed in the CMCN’s mailbox:

We have expanded our scanning facility and part inspection to the ultimate. From Renishaw 3-

Axis to 7-Axis Laser Romer Arm scanner. With this combination we can perform:

2D & 3D digitizing, 3D modeling, point inspection, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping or

copy milling. With the portable Romer Arm, it make scanning of a part possible on site.

Please give us a call if you would like more info or if you need to manufacture a part.

We can go from scanning a component to complete manufacturing of a part. Please see our

website for more information: www.edm.za.net

Hi All,

I thought you might like to see the completed Custom Bullet 500 cc I have been working on

Checking & Setting Float Height for Amal Concentrics: From the HMG newsletter

Improper float level can be determined by several factors

This is a very simple method to checking the float height, without special tools or risking the chance of spilling fuel and a fire. This is taken straight from the Triumph Factory Service bulletins. This is how they were set up in the factory and is good enough for general running, including Norton Commandos and BSAs. This setting is good for singles, twins and triples. For down-draught carbs that slope down (i.e. on Atlas), the setting will need to be adjusted to suit using other methods. The setting is 080" (80thou) or approx. 2mm BELOW the back edge of the float bowl. This is the measurement of the TOP edge of the plastic float to BELOW the top edge of the float bowl. Make a scribe mark on the metal float bowl and eye sight the plastic float when the float needle is seated by gently pushing down on the two pronged tab, using a spare finger to hold the brass pivot pin in place.

SO WONDERFULLY ENGLISH. . . . . . The English Stiff Upper Lip. On a train from London to Manchester to watch the cricket, an Australian was berating the Englishman sitting across from him in the compartment. "You English are too stuffy. You set yourselves apart too much. You think your stiff upper lip makes you above the rest of us. Look at me.. .. . I'm ME! . . . I have Italian blood, Greek blood, a little Irish blood, and some Aborigine blood. What do you say to that?" The Englishman replied, "Awfully sporting of your Mother, old chap!"

Is this a Laverton… or a Norda? -----------------------------------------------------------------------

A farmer died… …leaving his 17 horses to his three sons. When his sons opened up the Will it read: My eldest son should get 1/2 (half) of total horses; My middle son should be given 1/3rd (one-third) of the total horses; My youngest son should be given 1/9th (one-ninth) of the total horses. As it’s impossible to divide 17 into half or 17 by 3 or 17 by 9, the three sons started to fight with each other. So, they decided to go to a farmer friend who they considered quite smart, to see if he could work it out for them. The farmer friend read the Will patiently, after giving due thought, he brought one of his own horses over and added it to the 17. That increased the total to 18 horses. Now, he divided the horses according to their fathers Will. Half of 18 = 9. So he gave the eldest son 9 horses. 1/3rd of 18 = 6. So he gave the middle son 6 horses. 1/9th of 18 = 2. So he gave the youngest son 2 horses. Now add up how many horses they have: Eldest son……..9 Middle son…….6 Youngest son…2 TOTAL IS…….17. Now this leaves one horse over, so the farmer friend takes his own horse back to his farm. Problem Solved! Moral: The art of negotiation and problem solving is to find the 18th horse i.e. the common ground. Once a person is able to find the 18th horse the issue is resolved. It is difficult at times. However, to reach a solution, the first step is to believe that there is a solution. If we think that there is no solution, we won’t be able to reach any! That’s what I call clever Mathematics.
