Nairobi Area Activities Sheldrick Animal Orphanage Located in a secluded area of the Nairobi National Park the orphanage cares for baby

elephants and other orphaned species with a dedicated team of conservationists. The

orphanage is run by Daphne Sheldrick, the wife of the late famous Naturalist, David

William Sheldrick who was the founder Warden of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya

from its inception in 1948 to 1976.

At 11:00 am, the baby animals are brought from the National Park for a mud-bath at the

orphanage, where for an hour you can get close to them and sometimes touch them.

You may not feed the animals but will get a chance to view the handlers feeding them.

The Private Session strictly between 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm each day and allows you to

see and interact with the animals in private; advance booking required.

The drive to the orphanage takes approximately 45 minutes and is open to the public

for only one hour a day from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm.

In addition, one of the conservationists will give a talk about the elephants and where

they came from, how they managing at the orphanage and how some of the previous

orphans are progressing. During this talk you are observing the feeding, play and

bathing of the elephants and other orphaned species.

Price: $40 per person

Includes: Transport to and from orphanage, transport to and from lunch location of your

choice (if necessary/ desired, lunch additional), entry fee to orphanage.

Private Showing - Adopting a Baby Elephant for a Year

It's hard not to be touched when you see the orphans, and the dedication and hard work

demanded of the conservationists to keep them happy and healthy is inspiring. Feeding

them every three hours around the clock, keeping them warm and playing with them,

requires huge efforts and of course money. Starting at $50, you can adopt an orphan,

and the money goes directly to the project. You receive regular updates on your orphan

via e-mail, as well as a copy of his biography, an adoption certificate, a water color

painting of the orphan, and most importantly -- the knowledge that you have made a

difference. Once you adopt, you may also make an appointment to see your baby when

it goes to bed without the crowds during the public showing.

The Giraffe Center

The Giraffe Center in Nairobi started as the nonprofit African Fund for Endangered

Wildlife Kenya, a rehabilitation project to rescue the Rothschild Giraffe. At the center

you learn more about this amazing animal while actually feeding and touching them

from an elevating viewing house that also serves as the education center. The original

house of the founders has been converted into a very impressive boutique hotel called

the Giraffe Manor. Across from the Giraffe Center is a small nature walk that features

two other giraffes and a variety of unique plants and birds.

Price: $40 per person

Includes: Transport to and from the Giraffe Center, transport to and from lunch location

of your choice (if necessary/desired, lunch additional), entry fee to the Giraffe Center.

Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum was once the center piece of a farm at the foot of the Ngong

Hills owned by Danish author Karen and her Swedish husband, Baron Bror von Blixen

Fincke. Located 10km from the city center, the Museum belongs to a different time

period in the history of Kenya. The farm house gained international fame with the

release of the movie ‘Out of Africa’ an Oscar winning film based on Karen’s an

autobiography by the same title.

The Museum is open to the Public every day (9:30 am to 6:00 pm) including weekends

and public holidays; guided tours are offered continuously.

The Museum was built in 1912 by Swedish Engineer Ake Sjogren. Karen and her

husband bought the Museum house in 1917 and it became the farm house for their

4500 acre farm, of which 600 acres was used for coffee farming. Their marriage failed

after eight years and in 1921 the Baron moved out and left the running of the farm to

Karen which she did until her return to Denmark in 1931. The house and farm was

bought by Remy Marin, who broke the land into 20 acre parcels for development.

Subsequent development created the present suburb of Karen. Records indicate that a

Page 19: Classic Kenya Safari - groupon.s3.amazonaws.com...Classic Kenya Safari Day 1, Friday Depart home Day 2, Saturday Arrive Nairobi Following your flight Odyssey Safari staff will greet

Lt. Col. G. Lloyd, an officer of the British Army, bought the house in 1935 and lived there

until his death in 1954, when it passed to his daughters, Mrs. G.

Robersts and Lavender Llyod. A transfer of title to Mrs. J.P Robson and Mrs. L.B. Hyde

is in City Hall records in 1956. The house was sporadically occupied until purchased in

1964 by the Danish government and given to the Kenyan government as an

independence gift.

The government set up a college of nutrition and the Museum was initially used as the

principal’s house. In 1985 the shooting of a movie based on Karen’s autobiography

began and the National Museums of Kenya expressed an interest in the house and

acquired it for the purpose of establishing a Museum which opened in 1986.

Karen, also known by her pen name Isak Dinesen, was born at Rungstedlund in

Denmark on 17th of April 1885, the second child of Wilhelm and Ingeborg Dinesen’s five

children. She came to Africa in 1914 to marry her half cousin and carry out farming in

the then British Colony of Kenya. Her uncle Aage Westenholz financed the farm and

members of both families were shareholders.

It did not go as planned. The coffee farm did not do well, suffering various tragedies

including factory fire and continuous bad harvest. After her divorce, Karen was left to

run the financially troubled farm on her own, a daunting task for a woman of that

generation. She fell in love with an English man, Denis Finch Hatton, and his death in a

plane crash in Tsavo in 1930 coupled with the failed farming left Karen little choice but

to return to Denmark. Following her departure from Africa she launched a successful

writing as a career.

Karen produced Seven Gothic Tales (1934), Out of Africa (1937) and Babette Feat

(1950) to increasing acclaim. She lived out her remaining years in Denmark dying on

here family estate, Rungsted, in 1962 at the age of 77.

The Karen Blixen house meets three of the customary criteria for historical significance.

First, it is associated with the broad historical pattern of European settlement and

cultivation of East Africa. Second, it is associated with the life of a person significant to

our past as the home of Baroness Karen Blixen from 1917 -1931. As such, it served as

the setting and basis of her well known book Out of Africa, written under the pseudonym

Isak Dinesenand as a gathering place for other well-known personalities of the period.

Third, the building embodies the distinctive characteristics of its type, period and

method of construction. The house's architecture is typical of late 19th century

bungalow architecture, including the spacious rooms, horizontal layout verandas, tile

Page 20: Classic Kenya Safari - groupon.s3.amazonaws.com...Classic Kenya Safari Day 1, Friday Depart home Day 2, Saturday Arrive Nairobi Following your flight Odyssey Safari staff will greet

roof and stone construction typical of scores of residences built throughout European

suburbs of Nairobi in early decades.

The chronology of the house begins with its construction in 1912 by the wealthy

Swedish civil engineer, later honorary Swedish consul to Kenya, Ake Sjogren. It served

as the main residence on his Swedo-African coffee company , an estate of over 6,000

acres. The house was soon visited while on safari by the Danish count Mojen Frijs, who

upon his return to Denmark persuaded his cousin to seek their fortune in Kenya. Baron

Blixen acquired part of the estate in 1913 and the remainder in 1916. Karen Blixen

called the house "Bogani" or "Mbogani" meaning a house in the woods, and occupied it

until 1931.

By1985, with renewed interest in Karen Blixen occasioned by the film production of Out

of Africa, an agreement was reach with the college for the house to become part of the

National Museums of Kenya. Many pieces of furniture that Karen Blixen sold to Lady

McMillan on her departure were acquired back and constitute part of the exhibition in

the Museum. The Museum house remains a serene environment that seems to belong

to the past, surrounded by a tranquil garden and indigenous forest, with a splendid view

of Karen’s beloved Ngong Hills. At the opening of her book “Out of Africa” she honors

the hills with the phrase ‘I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills’.

Price: $40 per person

Includes: Transport to and from the museum, transport to and from lunch location of

your choice (if necessary/desired, lunch additional), entry fee to museum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kenya

What are the visa requirements for Kenya?

Required, $50 payable to Kenyan government – we provide instructions.

What immunizations do I need for this trip?

Currently there are no required vaccinations for entry to Kenya; however, you may want

to make sure the following vaccinations are up to date: Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid,

Tuberculosis, Diphtheria & Tetanus, Meningococcal Meningitis and Polio are suggested.

Your chances of contracting these diseases without immunizations are very low;

thousands of people come to Kenya without them and do not experience any problems.

It is up to you how you decide to immunize yourself, we recommend consulting a travel

doctor for 100% safety.

What medications, if any, do I need for this trip?

It depends on the locations you are visiting in Kenya. The safari destinations could be

considered malarial regions but we have not found that it is prevalent. If you are visiting

the coast or islands the only medication we recommend highly for this trip is an anti-

malarial medication. By simply taking an anti-malarial you can avoid this mosquito born

disease. This medication is not compulsory; by using mosquito repellent, keeping your

tent and mosquito net closed, wearing pants and long sleeves, and being attentive to

the situation you can avoid malaria without taking medication. We also recommend anti-

diarrhea medicine and nay other medications that will make your trip more enjoyable.

Climbers should bring aspirin for the altitude.

Where do I get more information on immunizations and medications?

The best place to go is a travel doctor. Often general practitioners do not have

immediate access to yellow fever and malaria medications, nor do they have up to date

information on new drugs or techniques. Simply go to your doctor and he will refer you

to a travel specialist. This travel doctor can answer all your questions, prescribe the

necessary medications, and administer the immunizations.

Optional activities such as snorkeling, diving, deep sea and sport fishing, balloon rides,

boat trips, bicycle rental, etc.

Personal expense money, personal trip insurance and medical fees.

What to Pack

In general when packing for East Africa, think less is more. If you can live without it,

leave it home. When deciding which type of clothes to bring keep in mind that daytime

temperature caries from 80-90 degrees during the day and 55-65 at night; in the upper

elevations it can get cooler (low 40's) at night.

ELECTRICITY IN EAST AFRICA

Traveling abroad and powering all your devices is confusing and Kenya electrical

outlets are no different. Electricity in Kenya is 240 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per

second. If you travel to Kenya with a device that does not accept 240 Volts at 50 Hertz,

you will need a voltage converter and an adapter that fits the plug sockets in Kenya.

There are three main types of voltage converter. Resistor-network converters will

usually be advertised as supporting something like 50-1600 Watts. They are light-weight

and support high-wattage electrical appliances like hair dryers and irons. However, they

can only be used for short periods of time and are not ideal for digital devices.

Transformers will have a much lower maximum Watt rating, usually 50 or 100.

Transformers can often be used continuously and provide better electricity for low

wattage appliances like battery chargers, radios, laptop computers, cameras, mp3

players and camcorders. However, they are heavy because they contain large iron rods

and lots of copper wire.

Some companies sell combination converters that include both a resistor network and a

transformer in the same package. This kind of converter will usually come with a switch

that switches between the two modes. If you absolutely need both types of converter,

then this is the type to buy.

Kenya Plug Adapters and Outlet Shapes

The Kenya electrical outlet is the same as the one used in Great Britain.

If your appliances plug has a different shape the electrical plugs in Kenya will not

accommodate it and you may need a plug adapter and you should confirm if your

Device can handle 240 volts to prevent damage.

MONEY ON SAFARI

US DOLLARS/EURO/GBP

US dollars, EUROs and GBP are widely accepted as payment at the lodges and camps

and are mandatory for paying for your visa if you are getting it on arrival; local currency

is better for local venues like souvenir stands and village visits.

Please make sure that all US currency you bring to Kenya and Tanzania is series 2004

or newer as older bills are no longer accepted; counterfeit currency is dumped on the

African market and those bills that are older than series 2004 do not have the newer

security features.

CREDIT CARDS

Credit cards are an easy way to take care of expenses incurred at lodges and camps

(not budget camps) at the end of your stay. You can charge personal expenses

(laundry, drinks, excursions, etc.) to your room and pay for them at the end of your stay;

visa is the most widely accepted followed by MasterCard and Amex.

TRAVELERS CHEQUES

Due to counterfeiting issues travelers checks are no longer accepted by most vendors

and are no longer recommended.

LOCAL CURRENCY

The local currency in Kenya and Tanzania is the shilling (KES) and (TZS) and you can

purchase it at the airport on arrival or at any bank in the major cities and towns. Our

staff can assist you in finding the best rate at the time you need to buy currency.

VACCINATIONS & IMMUNIZATIONS

Kenya & Tanzania

*Note: if you leave the airport in Kenya before traveling to Tanzania you will need a yellow fever

vaccination certificate.

Odyssey Safaris is constantly monitoring vaccination and immunization information to

keep our clients abreast of changes in government requirements and safety precautions

in east Africa.

Contrary to popular belief there are no vaccinations and immunizations required for

entry to Kenya or Tanzania. Many travel doctors still insist that clients get a yellow fever

vaccination but this has not been required for clients from North America for years

unless you are visiting a yellow fever endemic region before traveling to Kenya or

Tanzania.

If you are traveling to Kenya or Tanzania via South Africa you will need a yellow fever

vaccination to show the South African government to transit via their airports.

Malaria medication is essential for travel to the tropical coast and islands of east Africa

and safari travelers should consider whether they would like to take this medication as

the malaria risk is low in the national parks and reserves.

The best place to keep up to date with the most accurate vaccination and immunization

information is the Center for Diseases Control website:

http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/kenya.htm

http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/tanzania

Odyssey Safaris PHONE: (855) 2SAFARI EMAIL: [email protected] www.odysseysafaris.com

Why should you book with a tour operator?

Game drives: Unlimited — many safari companies and lodges try to save money on fuel by

going on game drives in the morning and evenings only (usually 1-2 hours each) and exploring

those areas of the parks adjacent to the lodge where guests are staying to keep mileage down.

They will then charge their guests a supplement to go on game drives outside of these times

anywhere in the range of $50-$100 per hour. We allow our guests the freedom to choose when,

and how long, they wish to view wildlife in the national parks and would never charge

additionally for the service.

Extra value is hard to quantify, but could be worth in excess of $100 dollars if you wanted to

spend even a few more hours viewing wildlife.

Vehicle: Mini-bus vs. 4x4 land cruiser.

The safari mini bus is a 2 wheel drive vehicle and risks getting stuck when driving on game park

roads or off road; our vehicles are new and well maintained. They have an additional pop up

roof in the front so a client may use the front seat and are equipped with a long range radio. In

addition, we also have a hook up for MP3/iPod players so that travelers can listen to their

favorite music. Extra value is hard to quantify, but could be priceless if you breakdown or get

stuck in the mud.

Seamless execution of itinerary: Our Company makes all your reservations and the same

guide who greets you at the airport is with you throughout your safari.

Airport transfers: In our experience an airport transfer is generally referred to as a one way

trip from or two the airport. We have included all airport transfers in this itinerary at a value of

$40-50 per transfer (this is the going taxi rate).

AMREF: Emergency air evacuation service included.

Bottled water: we provide a bottle of water each day.

Safety: Read all about all of the steps Odyssey Safaris takes to make your trip as enjoyable as

possible in the “Safe Travel” section of this packet.

We can adjust any of these itineraries to meet your travel needs and whether you travel with

your own private vehicle and guide or join a group we can find you the best option for your

safari.

As you can see we include everything you need to enjoy your safari except your visas and the

value we provide is more than you can find from any other company in the industry.

Why Odyssey Safaris? Many people think they can save money if they book direct with a foreign travel agent or

travel agency in Africa. This is not typically the case, especially when you factor in the

extra time, effort and risk involved. If you book direct with individual camps and lodges

in Africa, they may offer you a discount, but then you are stuck trying to figure out who

is meeting you at the airport and who is flying you into the bush. You also lose the

security of having one company overseeing all your arrangements with the ability to

make changes if they are necessary due to flight delays or other unforeseen problems.

Travel agencies in Africa don't have to abide by the strict consumer protections that are

standard in the USA. As an Odyssey Safari client, if you have a problem, we are here to

help you resolve it. We are your advocate. In short, if you go on your own and a

problem arises, you have no one to assist you (or complain to for that matter). By

booking with a jointly owned African and American based company you have recourse

when you return home. Without Odyssey Safaris, you are on your own.

Is Your Safari Secure?

With a growing number of travel specialists to choose from, finding a suitable one - with

experience and firsthand knowledge - can be challenging. Odyssey Safaris is a fully

licensed limited liability travel company, formed in New York, USA since 2004 and now

incorporated in Connecticut as Odyssey Safaris, LLC.

Important Things to Know Before You Book Your African Safari

Whether you book with Odyssey Safaris or another travel agency, make sure you work

extensive personal travel experience in Africa. We know these countries intimately and

our company is partly owned by Africans. Each of our professional safari consultants

lives or has lived and worked in their country of expertise. Our staff has personally

stayed at all of the lodges and hotels we work with. We regularly review properties to

ensure that each meets the high standard we demand for our clients. It is our policy to

regularly and personally visit every property we recommend to ensure that high

standard, but also because we love Africa and their wild areas.

Is prompt and reliable. Are calls answered? Are emails and phone messages replied

to in a timely manner? We are best known for our attentive service, attention to detail,

About Odyssey Safaris

An African safari is a deeply rewarding experience described by some as spiritual; to

walk this land, see these animals and climb these mountains brings one closer to nature

and an innate primeval cord deep within all of us. The beaches, mountains, and

savannas of Africa are a connection for humans to an earlier time when man and beast

shared the land. It is this complex experience of emotions that draws people from

around the world to climb the mountains of Kenya and Tanzania, stare into the face of

lions, and snorkel the reefs of the Kenyan coast.

Odyssey Safaris is committed to bringing its customers the same appreciation and

enjoyment of African people, culture, wildlife, and the environment that its founders

enjoyed and that ultimately spawned the energy for the creation of the company. The

employees of Odyssey Safaris will work tirelessly to ensure that your tour is enjoyable,

affordable, and safe, while maintaining respect for the native peoples and the wildlife we

encounter; we are deeply committed to maintaining the natural environment in which we

all live.

SAFE TRAVEL

Safe Travel

Safe and secure travel on your safari is our highest priority. Our safaris have been

carefully planned and researched by our local guides to safeguard against possible

contingencies. Odyssey Safaris takes a number of important steps to preempt any

possible problems and also provides additional measures in the event of an incident.

Flying Doctors

Complimentary enrollment in this emergency medical service at no extra charge.

The Flying Doctors Service operated by AMREF is one of the most comprehensive air

ambulance services in Africa, evacuating approximately 600 people annually. Flying

Doctors are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Staff includes trauma doctors and

nurses. The organization maintains 24-hour contact by direct radio, telephone, and fax

between their radio room in Nairobi and 120 sites across East Africa. Flying Doctors has

been operating for 40 years and owns and operates five aircraft. http://www.amref.org

Current Health Information

Prior to your departure you will receive Odyssey Safaris pre-departure welcome packet

which includes information about health issues for your travel in East Africa. We provide

health checklists and questions to ask your doctor as well as up-to-date information

from Centers for Disease Control about traveling in East Africa. Additionally, pre-

departure briefings prepare you with safe practices that will maximize your safety and

security. We give you detailed instructions on local laws, customs, and safari practices,

so that you will know what to expect at all times. For added convenience, we give you

phone and email contacts you can leave with friends and family at home to assure

access if they need to reach you.

Kenya's tourism industry is a major part of its economy and the government goes out of

its way to protect tourists and tourist sites. Odyssey Safaris is in contact with police both

locally and nationally, the Kenyan government security services, and the US Embassy.

In the event of an incident ranging from a political protest to something more serious we

are notified by these services and communicate with our safari drivers via the vehicle

radios and cell phones to ensure the safety of our guests. We also assist you in

enrolling in the Smart Traveler Program via the US Embassy which keeps travelers

informed of security developments.

Reliable Vehicles

Odyssey Safaris provides 4x4 Toyota Safari Land Cruisers for all our safaris regardless

of budget (no mini-buses). Our vehicles are rigorously maintained, inspected, cleaned,

and tested before and after every safari. All vehicles are equipped with 2 spare tires, a

1st aid kit, and a radio to communicate with our main office, park rangers, base camp,

Flying Doctors, and the Kenyan police. These are spacious, comfortable vehicles

capable of challenging off road terrain while still large enough to guarantee our guests a

window seat.

Local Guides

Odyssey Safaris guides are all native Kenyans and Tanzanians fluent in both English

and Swahili with a minimum 12 years safari experience; many speak 4 languages

including their tribal language and either French or German. Odyssey Safaris guides

intimate knowledge of local customs, history, and context will enlighten your cultural

experience as well as keep your safari trouble free; their experience will keep you safe

on safari.

Odyssey Safaris guides are your personal naturalists, keeping your informed and

entertained when sighting species but also safe and secure. Many of Africa's species

can present a threat to humans, but usually only when provoked. Our guides are

experienced with every species you'll see on safari and understand how to view them

safely while providing the most exciting safari experience possible. Our guides

understanding of animal safety not only in the vehicle but at the campsite will ensure

you a safe and enjoyable safari.

Bottled Water, Hygienic Food Prep &

Complimentary Bottled Water Daily

Waterborne diseases present the greatest source of discomfort to travelers. Odyssey

Safaris provides complimentary bottled water for its guests and uses it for all food

preparation. We also inspect the kitchens of the lodges and camps used by our guests

to ensure the highest standards of food safety.

Mountain Safety

High altitude trekking in East Africa presents unique challenges to the hiker. Odyssey

Safaris mountain guides are all NOLS East Africa graduates with experience on both

Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Their knowledge of these distinct mountain

environments and the ever changing weather conditions is essential for a positive

experience. Your mountain crew is equipped with radios and cell phones for

communication amongst the group and with mountain rangers. They are all trained in

1st aid and carry a medical bag for emergencies.
