April 1 st , 2003 Page 1 of 3 3UHVLGHQWV5HSRUW Dear Members, With summer approaching its time to pull the sheets off and start buffing up those bikes. Lets get ready for riding and fun. As you know on April 26 th we (BCBC) will be having a display tent with about 30 bikes and memorabilia at the Ag Show. So far we have put together a variety of bikes from nicely restored to original untouched right to everyday riders. It’s your bikes. This is a first for the club so we are looking forward to making it a first rate display. If all goes well we look forward to making it an annual event. If you have any ideas for the next event please feel free to pass it on to the committee. As I said at the beginning with summer approaching you immediately think of nice sunny riding days. Well that was not the case when I was at Bike Week in Daytona just the past month. The weather was looking for some excellent riding as we reached the USA. My buddy and I got the Harleys and Triumph loaded up in the trailer, filled the RV with food and away we went. It was a two-hour drive to Daytona from where we were and as we drove it got dark and cool; it did not look good at all. Well, it rained for the first two days then we met up with some friends and as you guessed it we went riding and got wet. So, for the next three or four days it was traveling by pickup truck. The weather finally cleared up enough for us to get some three hundred and fifty miles of riding under our belts for the next few days and dodging the rain of course. Well that is what riding is all about, experiencing break downs, rough weather and all in all at the same time having FUN. I look forward to seeing you on the 26 th of April whether you are displaying a bike or just dropping by to absorb the bikes and the sights. Thank you for your support, Paul Martins President (GLWRULDO Hi All, Well it’s that time again for the ole newsletter to be sent out and as I was going through the up and coming events I realized that we have quite a few things lined up for this year. I would like to give Stephen Decosta the two thumbs up for the amount of effort he has put in to getting the events going. I am hoping that he won’t be disappointed and that we will get the support and turnout from the members. As we progress with the club and this newsletter I had considered and started to create a newsgroup for the members, which would allow everyone who is on the Internet to chat about various topics. This can be from motor problems to finding the various articles related to a model of bike they may have. I have created a group under Yahoo Groups (which is free) that is called Bermuda Classic Bike Club. It is located under http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/bermudaclassic/ . Additionally to allowing members to keep in touch, the group has a URL section for those common motorcycle sites that members frequent, a database section to keep copies of bike manuals etc or even a database of bike frames and engine numbers if we ever decide to keep a register. Also there is a photo’s section that will allow members to view other member’s bikes etc. Anyhow if everyone could have a look at the group, provide feedback and let me know what you think. If I get enough positive responses I will continue with it. Members are quite often asking me how they can sign up friends for membership. If you would like to sign up any of your friends I would ask that you collect the following particulars, which will assist me when sending them quarterly newsletters and when we have to call any special meetings. Their full address, Home and work numbers, E-mail address if they have one, What bikes they have; and, Collect a dollar from them. You can then give this information and the $1 to myself or any of the other committee members at the next meeting or event. Once I receive the particulars I will send them a copy of the last newsletter and a membership card. Welcome to the following new members: Robbie Moniz Max Moniz Leroy Furbert Horace Tucker Members in total: 102 (YHQWV1HZV Agriculture Exhibition Show Saturday April 26, 2003 This is a new venue for the club and we hope to make it an annual event.     After sending a letter to the Chamber of Commerce explaining our dues structure and outlining how we felt that as a group of exhibitors we brought out additional member of the public to the harbor nights event, they have invited the club to exhibit on the following dates;

    MMaayy 77tthh,, JJuunnee 1188tthh,, JJuullyy 2233rrdd,, AAuugguusstt 1133tthh aanndd SSeepptteemmbbeerr 1100tthh

    We would like to see as many members as possible to make the effort to come out with their bikes to these events. If we show the Chamber of Commerce that we can draw the various bikes and the crowd, hopefully they will invite us back next year. The event starts at 07:00 and any member wishing to show their bike is requested to be there no later than 06:30 so that they are not faced with having to push their bikes through Front Street to reach the location.

    FFuunn BBiikkee RRiiddeess This is a series of bike rides set out for the members starting at various locations so that we can enjoy the sceneries of Bermuda and at the same time enjoy the company of like-minded individuals. There is no entrance fee for these rides with the exception of the Xmas ride and all members are welcome to bring friends along. The following outlines the dates, times and locations for the rides to start at.

    June 29th, 09:00 am at City Hall Car park. September 21st, 09:00 am at Flatts car park across from the Aquarium.

    October 26th, 09:00 am meet at the flagpole in Hamilton. December 7th. The BCBC Xmas Christmas Charity Bike Ride. More

    information on this as it gets closer. Note: All Members keep in touch with the committee for additional up and coming events throughout the year as there are additional things in the works.

    Sec: Mr. Pedro do you have any interesting stories to tell us? RP: Actually I have a few. The first one is surrounding the Kreidlers, or as everyone knows them as KK’s. When they first came here to Bermuda they were very loud and TCD did not have any way of testing the noise. So what they did was have the KK owner’s come off Bernard’s Park Hill heading towards TCD, and about halfway of the road distance they had a sound microphone setup from one side of the street to the other, which allowed them to determine if the bike was too loud. Stay tuned next month for the continuation and final portion of Mr. Pedros story…..

    When Charles Roberts of Narrow lane St Davids first told me about the Suzuki he had, I thought “I have to do an article about this bike” and I wasn’t disappointed.

    Charles grew up in a family that had a passion for motorcycles, which was quite evident when you consider that his father rode a Vespa 150, his mother rode a Francis Barnett, not an autocycle but a 125cc motorcycle with the hand change on the tank, and his sister rode a Tiger Cub. His first bike was a pipe-frame Mobylette that he setup as most teenagers do when they get their first bike. Once he was of the legal age he then purchased a Gilera 125 sports, which was one of two ever brought into Bermuda for a tardy sum of 100 pounds. Eventually Charles sold the Gilera and bought a Honda 125 twin that also eventually was sold after many years of faithful service. Roll on many years and Charles and his wife were looking to sell their old car to purchase a new one. As part of the deal the purchaser, David Burrows, swapped the bike you see here. Initially Charles who had not had a bike since his Honda twin intended to use the bike as a daily rider but that never happened. It became a Sunday rider.

    The bike has changed many hands through out its life as it was one of the first RC100’s introduced to Bermuda. The bike was nick named “Chicken One” after the Kellogg chicken theme and mural that is throughout the bike. The bike was built after Zuill undertook the paintwork and the artwork by Nelson Pimentel were completed. As you can see this is a very clean and tidily built bike. Evidently the original owner who is quite well known for building outstanding bikes built it within two weeks after sourcing the necessary parts. As Charles, the original owner built it to be ridden daily but as you can see from the pictures it would be a shame to ruin such a lovely bike.
