Greetings Fairchild students!Another wonderful growing season is upon us. Join Fairchild staff and local horticulturists as they share their knowledge on how to grow a variety of plants ranging from ferns, orchids, native plants, vegetables, tomatoes and those back yard giants, the palms.

Here’s your chance to learn how to paint or draw. All you need to do is pick the medium. Choose from a variety of art classes conducted by our devoted and experienced local artists.

Eager photographers will be able to capture the Garden’s beauty morning, noon and night. Would you like to learn more about your Smart Phone’s camera apps? There are classes for both iPhone and Android users. We welcome back our favorite chefs with new culinary twists for you to try in your own kitchen.

VEGETABLE GARDENING IN SOUTH FLORIDA ElainE Farquharson This is the time to get your vegetable garden ready for South Florida’s growing season. Elaine is back for her ninth year to teach eager students the Do’s and Don’ts of vegetable gardening. Students will learn all aspects of vegetable gardening including improving their soil, composting, and building raised beds and trellises. Pests and diseases will also be covered. Join Miami landscape designer, Carlos Somoza, on a journey through subtropical gardens that illustrate stunning plant combinations that can be used in your private gardens and on your balconies. Fundamental planting design principals, including color, form and texture will be discussed along with basic culture and characteristics of the plant palettes being highlighted. Taking care of your palms can sometimes seem like a mystery. What are your palms trying to tell you? Learning to uncover the secrets of your backyard giants is the key to their health. Does your palm have frizzled or discolored leaves? Shriveled trunks? Are they not producing fruit? The three hour class will be spent in a practical session of the whip and tongue grafting technique; a challenge to master but has one of the highest rate of success. The art of grafting to many gardeners is a fascinating subject to learn. Dr. Ledesma will show participants the process of growing rootstock, to nursery beds and finally in established orchards. In this class for the novice beekeeper, you will learn about beekeeping and harvesting honey. Explore Fairchild through the lens of your camera with visions of black and white images dancing in your head. Using a digital camera, interesting black and white photographs can be achieved using in-camera settings and/or Adobe Photoshop. In this class you will explore various ways to capture and process images with your iPhone, and you’ll learn to create stunning results using a variety of apps. There are over 10,000 photography apps available and you will be introduced to some of the more popular ones. INSTRUCTORSRicardo Aberle, a native of El Salvador, followed in his father’s footsteps as a watercolor artist. He became seriously involved with the medium after moving to Florida as a young adult. As the Grounds Supervisor at Fairchild, he has endless opportunities to capture his subjects in photographs, and spends many hours in his home studio on weekends completing his masterpieces. He is a recipient of many awards and spent a month at Monet’s Garden in Giverny combining both his love of horticulture and his passion for painting.

Dan Bondroff has a B.S. in Art/Visual Communication from Towson University. Working with pastels, he enjoys capturing those often overlooked and fleeting moments that occur in the natural world. He also looks forward to guiding his students as they make their own discoveries.

Christopher Bulgarin, a graduate of Johnson and Wales, is well-versed in the workings of the Florida cuisine community. Chef and owner of Delicious Catering, he has worked with many local chefs, taught classes and made guest appearances on television.

Helen Burgos studied in England and the U.S. She holds an M.F.A. from FIU, where she is an adjunct professor and teaches drawing and painting. She has been teaching her popular drawing and oils classes at Fairchild for over 13 years years.

Dr. Richard J. Campbell is the Director of Horticulture at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. A native of South Florida with deep experience in tropical fruits, he draws on his years of travel experience collecting and researching tropical fruit in Asia and the Americas to provide the latest information, quality trees and tropical fruit tastes to an enthusiastic public. He has authored over a hundred scientific and popular articles on fruit culture in the last decade as well as two books, “Mangos: A Guide to Mangos in Florida” (1992) and “Tropical Mangos: How to Grow the World’s Most Delicious Fruit” (2002).

Carolyne Coppolo is the owner of the Redland Herb Farm where she has been a commercial herb grower since 1997. She has taught many organic herb gardening workshops in the community.

Al Diaz is an award winning Miami photojournalist. A camera is not just a piece of equipment that he carries with him, it’s an appendage, a body part that he never leaves home without. This Miami native, University of Florida journalism graduate and Miami Herald staff member looks forward to sharing his knowledge and experiences with Fairchild members and guests alike. Shirley Drevich holds a BFA from Tulane University in Ceramics with a minor in Photography. She did post graduate work in jewelry at Boston University’s Program in Artisanry. Over the last few years she has been engaged in iPhoneography (photography and processing exclusively on an IOS device). She has exhibited her images in several shows in New York City, Santa Monica, CA, Berkely, CA, Miami, FL and Naples, Italy.

Betty Eber has been cultivating and collecting orchids for many years and completed a UF Orchidology course. Past president of the Orchid Society of Coral Gables, she is a popular instructor and speaker at Fairchild and at local orchid shows and sales.

Sara Edelman is a rare Miami native, born and raised a few miles from the Garden. Sara has been the Palm and Cycad Manager at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens for the past three years and is working on her PhD on palm morphology and architecture. Sara loves to share her palm knowledge and strives to improve the palm collection at Fairchild through appropriate horticultural practices.

Elaine Farquharson, formerly a horticultural technician at the Broward County Extension Service, has been growing tomatoes for over ten years. An experienced teacher who has mastered the technique of growing tomatoes and other vegetables in South Florida, she is eager to share the secret of her success with others.

Kathryn Ford began painting after a long nursing career and began taking classes and workshops with acclaimed artists. During her first class at Fairchild with David Maddern, she fell in love with watercolors. His mentoring over the years helped her to define her style which is strong color with a twist of abstraction. She has won many awards and been active with the Miami Watercolor Society for the past seven years.

Mike Freedman grew up and attended schools in Miami, graduating from FIU with science degrees in 1976. Along the way, he has worked in various biological endeavors including the Miami Serpentarium, Crandon Park Zoo, and Fairchild in the early 70s. Mike started and ran a wholesale fern nursery and later worked in and managed orchards in Israel until his return to Fairchild in 2007. He currently oversees fern propagation in the horticulture department.

Dottie Greene is a signature member of both the Florida and National Watercolor Societies. Her love for the natural world began at an early age and is a central theme in her art. She has taught people of all ages and Fairchild is proud to have her as an instructor.

Billo Jolly has been teaching Indian cuisine at Fairchild for over ten years. She co-owned Taste of India and Punjab Palace restaurants and has taught Indian cooking at Bobbie and Carole’s Cook Shop and at the Miami-Dade Community Kendall Campus.

Peter Kouchalakos is a Past President of the Bromeliad Society of South Florida and the Pan American Orchid Society, a Certified Horticultural Professional with the Florida Nursery Growers Association, and a Coral Gables native. Peter has been growing bromeliads for over 20 years.

Pedro Lastra realized his passion for photography in high school and later served as Brown University’s yearbook photo editor. After leaving a successful 12-year international corporate career, he is currently pursuing his deferred vocation as a photographer, digital photo printer and digital darkroom expert. A world traveler, his award-winning photographs have appeared on numerous magazine covers.

Dr. Noris Ledesma is the Curator of Tropical Fruit and Outreach Specialist for the Tropical Fruit Program at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Noris brings a tropical fruit passion and flare to her programs derived from years of first-hand experience in her native country of Colombia. Her travels around the world have enhanced her knowledge and appreciation for tropical fruit. She is a plant collector and co-author of four books and numerous scientific publications and popular articles: For the Love of Mangos-India, (2008), A Quick Guide of Mangos (2005) The Exotic Jackfruit: Growing the World’s Largest Fruit (2003); and Mangos: A Guide to Mangos in Florida (1992).

Chris Migliaccio teaches natural science at Miami-Dade College and has taught palm, aroid and tropical botany classes at Fairchild for many years.

Hillary Parker is a naturalist and international award winning botanical watercolor artist with paintings exhibited and sold worldwide. She has enjoyed a dual career of teaching and painting for over 25 years and works full time to keep up with the demands of private and public commissions, juried exhibitions, lectures, international workshops, private art instruction and solo and group shows with galleries that represent her. Guillermo Salazar is a professional landscape designer and horticulturist with many years of experience in the South Florida landscape industry. His experience in the field includes adjunct faculty for Miami-Dade College Landscape Technology program, ISA arborist and a Certified Landscape Inspector. He has been collecting orchid species since childhood and is currently studying to become a judge for the American Orchid Society.

Carlos Somoza is passionate about the craft and design of elegant gardens. After practicing landscape architecture in Washington, D.C. for over a decade, he returned to his native South Florida and opened a private design studio specializing in the design of contemporary subtropical gardens. Carlos is an avid photographer and frequently visits private estates and specialty nurseries for design inspiration and photographic opportunities. He currently serves as a private consultant to his own clientele and numerous landscape contractors and architects in Miami.

Johnson Teh, executive chef of Lan Pan-Asian Café and Yuga Restaurant in Coral Gables, specializes in East Asian cuisine. Chef Teh has over 25 years of culinary experience, including cooking at the Mandarin in Beverly Hills.

Donna Torres has an M.F.A. from FIU and is an accomplished botanical illustrator. She draws on her extensive travels for inspiration. Mrs. Torres has been teaching botanical illustration courses at Fairchild for over 10 years.

Jeff Wasielewski has been active in the South Florida horticulture community for over 25 years. He is the Commercial Tropical Fruit Agent for Miami-Dade County and the University of Florida IFAS. He has a strong passion to educate the public and Fairchild is fortunate to have him volunteer his time to support our education program.

Mai Yap is an accomplished artist celebrated for her realistic close-up flowers and her palette knife work of the Everglades. She holds a B.A. in Advertising and Graphic Design from the University of Georgia. She is the Founder of Palette Knife Artists of Miami and is represented locally by ArtSight Gallery in Coral Gables, Fl. For over 20 years her work has been collected, both corporate and privately.
