    Outline

The class programme will focus on environmental auditing and environmental managementsystems, increasingly used by individual organisations from a variety of sectors to measureand manage their environmental and sustainability performance. In particular, you will gainpractical experience in implementing an environmental management system at LSE you will

actively take part in an assessment of the LSEs environmental impacts and sustainability, working with the LSEs Environmental and Sustainability Manager. At the end of term, we willreport back to the LSE with our findings.

You will assist the LSE in its ongoing implementation of Ecocampus(http://www.ecocampus.co.uk/), an environmental management system (EMS) specificallydesigned for, and being piloted across a number of, UK universities. Ecocampus is designedto take participating universities step-by-step towards implementation of a fully fledged, internationally recognised EMS, like ISO 14001.

The LSE has already achieved Ecocampus bronze award, which means roughly that it has

secured senior management commitment, conducted a baseline environmental review andproduced a draft environmental policy. Your job is to take the LSE to a silver award, culminating in the adoption of a full environmental policy. The core task at this stage ofimplementing an EMS is to identify the organisations significant environmental aspects andimpacts, with special (but not exclusive) reference to legal requirements and compliance.

Unlike other courses, the timetabled meetings are only part of the class programme. Theyprovide a forum for the explanation of tasks, discussion and feedback, but you will beexpected to carry out several tasks in your own time. Homework will be distributed at the endof each class.
