The Marsing High School Class of 2010 theme shows determination: “If we can’t fi nd a way, we will make one” by Carthaginian military commander Hannibal.

On Friday, May 21, 2010, that determination will pay off with graduation for 50 students.

The ceremony is set for 7 p.m. inside the MHS gymnasium on Main Street.

District clerk Debbie Holzhey will give the keynote address,

while counselor John Cossel will announce scholarships and awards and award diplomas. Principal Wade Pilloud also will make presentations, and retiring superintendent Dr. Harold Shockley will confi rm the graduates.

After senior class president Libby Wieser’s welcoming address and a slide show retrospective for the Class of 2010, the salutatorians and valedictorians will speak.

Jessie Cossel, the daughter of John and Ronda Cossel, and Brisa

Stahle (Connie and Ivan Stahle, parents) are the valedictorians.

The salutatorians are Brian Galligan, son of Kathleen and Don Galligan, and Kacie Hull, the daughter of Glenn and Angela Richardson.

After Shockley confirms the graduates, the senior choir will sing “On My Way” by Phil Collins. The senior choir consists of Ty Shippy, Jessie Cossel, Charli Bradshaw, Edith Leal, Alicia Hiatt and Hilary Williams.

Determined Marsing seniors ready for diplomasDistrict clerk delivers keynote address for 50 grads Friday

To the Graduating Class of 2010,I bid you farewell with a deep sense of pride and affection.

I have come to know many of you as individuals in various aspects of school life. I have come to know the unique characteristics, accomplishments and frailties of so many of you.

Throughout your years at the Marsing High School, it has been our major purpose to help you grow into intelligent, compassionate and responsible citizens. It has been our objective to build in you an unswerving appreciation of and a loyalty to the democratic values upon which our nation stands. Our emphasis has always been to develop in you the necessary skills that you will need for a sound educational foundation. This foundation will not only serve you well in your pursuit for higher education, if that is your goal, but will be of advantage to you in your social and business endeavors.

Each of your teachers has had much to offer you. They have contributed and infl uenced your intellectual, social and emotional growth. You have the necessary tools to get the job done. I have no doubt that you will carry on in the tradition of the hundreds of Marsing School students who preceded you and are now productive members of our society, no matter what their walk of life.

I have one earnest wish for you: Live your lives in such a way that you will refl ect credit upon yourselves, your parents and your community. I echo the wishes of all our faculty when I say to you good luck and Godspeed.

Congratulations!

Jordan Valley schools superin-tendent Andree Scown and school board chair Silas Skinner handed out diplomas to 13 graduating seniors during a Saturday, May 8, 2010, ceremony for Jordan Valley High School.

The program inside the school’s new gymnasium included a slide-show of class memories and stu-dents who received scholarships from local organizations were spotlighted.

The class co-valedictorians were Bryce Everett Kershner and Laura Katherine Jewett. Saluta-torian was Brandan Paul Mack-enzie. All three addressed their classmates during the ceremony.

The student body president, Jewett is the daughter of David and Lisa MacKenzie and the late Gary Gleason. The 18-year-old carried a 4.0 grade-point average during her high school career. She originally attended Caldwell High School where she was involved in the drama department and served as coordinator for Caldwell’s par-ticipation in the Canyon County Youth Court. Other activities at Caldwell included school plays and musicals, student awareness

programs, student mentoring, Teens Against Tobacco Use and an advanced art class.

“Moving to Jordan Valley gave me a whole new area of activities to explore,” she said. “While liv-ing here, I’ve written and directed a play, put on a talent show/art fundraiser, received IDLA (Idaho Digital Learning Academy) stu-dent of the month, a citizenship award, English student of the year, and I was Mistress of Cer-emonies for the graduating class for 2009.”

She has competed for the Jor-dan Valley volleyball and track and fi eld teams.

She still finds time for hob-bies, too.

“I’m a Jack-of-many-trades,” she said. “I’ve tried so many dif-ferent hobbies and have enjoyed a large majority of them.”

Jewett does have favorites, though: painting/drawing, read-ing, singing and dancing, baking and “just making every moment a good one by having fun.”

Her favorite quote is: “Let in-spiration guide you.”

Post-high school plans aren’t set in stone for Jewett.

“There are so many options for me that are so appealing,” she said. “I can’t settle on just one.”

Theater and art are appeal-ing, she said, but Jewett also has thought of studying architecture or psychology.

She does plan to attend com-munity college in the Treasure Valley before transferring to a four-year university. She’s mov-ing to Caldwell for the summer to live with her aunt and save money for college.

The son of Kenny and Teresa Kershner, Bryce Kershner car-ried a 4.0 GPA while excelling in athletics and FFA. The 18-year-old will continue his education at Pacific University in Forest Gove, Ore., playing football and studying for a degree in athletic training.

Kershner played football and basketball for four years and was named the student of the month eight times. He was a fi rst-team All-High Desert League running back and defensive back and was the HDL’s player of the year in 2009. He will play in the East-West All-Star Game this summer in Baker City, Ore., and has been

named a first alternate for the East-West Shrine Game.

The rest of Kershner’s acco-lades refl ect his favorite quote, which comes from the late Indian leader Jawaharal Nehru: “Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents de-terminism; the way you play it is free will.”

Kershner somehow fi nds time to be outdoors hunting and fi sh-ing or spending time with friends and family while owning 12 head of angus cross cows and main-taining a four-year run on the school’s high honor roll and four-year membership in the National Honor Society.

Kershner also was a four-year member of the Jordan Valley FFA and served as class president in 2006.

He was third at freshman creed speaking and served as a district delegate in 2007-08. He was president of his 4-H club from 2007 to 2009 and also held offi ce in FFA (treasurer, 2008; vice-president, 2009).

Brandan Mackenzie is the son of Sam and Bonnie Mackenzie and carried at 3.73 GPA at Jordan Valley.

The 18-year-old plans to rodeo

in college while getting an Ag-ricultural Business degree and pursuing a pilot’s license.

The rodeo is a good fit for Mackenzie, who likes to rope and ride as well as hunt, fi sh, ski, swim and spend time with his family. His favorite quote is “Life is a garden. Dig it.”

Mackenzie has been successful in rodeo, qualifying for the state high school rodeo and winning the 2009 District II all around cowboy championship.

A member of the National Honor Society, he has appeared on Jordan Valley’s high honor and honor roll. He also has earned the FFA State Degree.

Mackenzie also has excelled in athletics. He was a High Des-ert League scholar-athlete and an award-winning football and basketball player. He was a fi rst-team all-district basketball player and helped the Mustangs win the league and district champion-ships.
