Class of 1960 Celebrates Fifty Years

By Patricia Jackson Hinson, Class of 1960

It was decided, the class of 1960 needed to reunite! The phone calls began and a plan

started to develop. The response most heard by Joyce Moser, as she called her fellow class-

mates of the class of 1960 was, “You’re kidding! Has it really been fifty years?” The excitement

began to spread and the plan to reunite classmates began coming together. It was decided…we

would all meet for lunch. So on a hot and humid August day, we all headed to Johnny Carino’s in

Kannapolis, NC to reunite with one another.

We ate lunch and spent hours talking over old times and the many experiences we had

living in the dorms. We all remembered the rigid rules and strict housemothers. We reminisced

about how we always managed to get caught in our mischief and ended each long day sitting out

in the hall sharing devotions

and a prayer.

Sixteen members

of the class of 1960 attend-

ed the lunch. Afterwards,

Lois Marlow invited every-

one that could stay, back to

her home for cake and ice

cream. What a great time

we all had! Fun, food,

that!

COLLEGE NEWS Cabarrus College Receives Grants

The College has received an $85,000 grant through CMC-NorthEast, given by the Cannon Foundation. This grant will be

used to purchase, much anticipated, simulation equipment. The equipment will be housed at CMC-NorthEast and will greatly im-

pact the hands-on education of students, as well as, other healthcare professionals. The College is thrilled to have this opportunity,

which will enhance the education of our students for years to come.

The College was also recently awarded a $5,850 grant from the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities

(NCICU). The grant will be used at the College to develop a program that will increase the access of educational opportunities for

underrepresented students. The grant was awarded to Dr. Mark Ellison, Director of Admissions and Tihida Simmons, Admissions

Specialist. As part of this program, Student Ambassadors will be selected to represent Cabarrus College at open house programs

and healthcare career fairs by communicating with prospective students. Ambassadors will also follow up with prospective stu-

dents via telephone, email and written communication.

CCANS Holds Capping

Ceremony for December

Graduates

On December 3, 2010,

the Cabarrus College Association

of Nursing Students (CCANS) held

a capping ceremony to recognize

those ADN students graduating in

December. Twenty-two students

were presented with caps during

the ceremony.

The nursing cap has long been a

symbol of the nursing profession. It was first introduced by Florence Nightingale, who was responsible for the development of train-

ing programs for nurses, as well as the design of the first nursing uniforms. The nurse’s cap was designed after a nun’s habit, as a

way to give credit to the work of nuns as the earliest nurses.

Students were able to invite family and friends to share in this momentous occasion. A small reception was held following

the ceremony. The capping ceremony for May 2011 graduates is scheduled for Monday, May 9th.

Faculty and Student Accomplishments

The College congratulates Baccalaureate Nursing Program Chair, Molly Patton (pictured, top left), who has been

elected secretary for the North Carolina Deans and Directors of Baccalaureate Nursing Education. She will be

working alongside UNC Nursing Dean, Kristen M. Swanson, who was elected president.

A faculty member and two students from the surgical technology program at Cabarrus College of Health

Sciences were nominated and elected to serve in leadership capacities with the North Carolina Association of

Surgical Technologists at the organization’s annual meeting recently.

Kristi Pair (pictured, bottom left), faculty member for the surgical

technology program, was nominated and elected to the Association of Surgi-

cal Technologists Board of Directors. As a member of the board , she will

serve a two-year term, and will help formulate policies and procedures for the

organization.

Surgical technology associate degree students Kayla Patterson

(pictured, middle) and Chad Moore (pictured, right) were nominated and

elected to serve as Association of Surgical Technologists delegates. Delegates attend all board meetings and vote on pending poli-

cies and legislation. Congratulations to you all!

New and Expanded Student Computer Lab Opens

On January 13, 2011, Cabarrus College celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new

and expanded student computer lab (pictured below, right). The lab relocated to the 1st floor in the

Hayes Student Pavilion and is equipped with new computers and multifunction printers and copi-

ers. Jay Kablan, SGA President (pictured, right) cut the ribbon to officially open the new lab.

College Administration listened to the feedback students provided in the ACT Student

Opinion Survey about the need for more computers, improved printing capabilities, and better ac-

cess to copiers. There are twelve PCs in the lab and three multifunction printer/copiers. Addition-

ally, the walk-up computers in the Hayes Student Pavilion are now running Microsoft Office 2010

and can print to the new computer lab. The new computer lab has expanded hours and is acces-

sible any time the building is open. Students simply use their ID badge to gain access. There are

also scheduled times that computer assistance is available to students who are in the lab.

Alumni and Long-time NorthEast Employees Visit with Bob and Trilby Wall In November of this past year, Mr. Bob Wall, retired President of NorthEast Medical Center, and his wife Trilby invited a group of retired nurses for lunch to their beautiful mountain home in West Jefferson, North Carolina. Many of the ladies in attendance are graduates of the former Cabarrus Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, currently Cabarrus Col-lege of Health Sciences. The group represented a total of 833 years of nursing! They enjoyed lunch together and spent much of the day reminiscing about their years at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital and NorthEast. All of the ladies were thankful to the Walls for opening their home to them and providing such a wonderful day of fellowship.
