LET’S START WITH WHAT YOU HAVE TO TALK ABOUT

What were some of the things you guys wrote about in your responses for this week?

• “He tells of the history of Panem, the country that rose up out of the ashes of a place that was once called North America. He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms, the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war for what little sustenance remained. The result was Panem, a shining Capitol ringing by thirteen districts, which brought peace and prosperity to its citizens” pg 17-18 (I think – I have an ebook)

• What does this quote tell us about the world that Katniss lives in? How did her world come to be?

• If you knew that taking their place would more than likely result in your death, would you volunteer to take the place of a loved one? Let’s say that instead of the Hunger Games, someone with a gun came into your home. To save your brother, or mother, or father, would you step in front of a bullet? Why or why not?

• How difficult of a situation do you think this was for Katniss?

• Why is silence the “boldest form of dissent they can manage”?

• What do you think the “Treaty of Treason” might outline or contain?

• “To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the break that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed. And more than once, I have turned in the school hallway and caught is eyes trained on me, only to quickly flit away. I feel like I owe him something, and I hate owing people.”

• Based on what you know about Katniss so far, why do you think she hates owing people?
