Class and status representation in Robin Hood

In this clip of Robin Hood a period drama, class and status is represented through different ways. The class and status does change throughout the clip which demonstrates control and power within the characters.

The soldiers in this clip are represented as high class and high status. This is shown through the dialogue. When the soldiers are talking to their prisoner they are well spoken and pronounce their words correct. This shows that they come from a more refined background and higher class then their prisoner. They are also shown as high class through the costume. There is a long shot of the soldiers all stood round their prisoner. This shows them all dressed the same in uniform. The uniform is black armour, which demonstrates evil and richness because they are clean and look presentable as expected of high class people such as the kings soldiers. They are all dressed the same which shows no individuality and no higher status between the men. The soldiers are quite patronising which gives them a higher status and more power than the person they are holding prisoner. This is shown through a high angle shot of them all stood around him; this is a conventional shot of this type of drama as it shows that the soldiers are quite intimidating and higher class then the prisoner. In this particular part of the clip, when they are chasing the prisoner the lighting is quite natural but the soldiers have shadowed faces. This shows that they are quite scary and intimidating, which is represented through the contrasting lighting effects used on the soldiers faces compared to the prisoners face which is lit up and shows him looking scared and inferior to the soldiers therefor giving them more class then him. Also in the clip there is a close-up of what appears to be the leading soldier. It shows that he is quite a mean character with no mercy. This is shown through his expressions on his face through the close-up, when the man is pleading for his hand and this soldier is just ordering his men to get on with it, with a smug look on his face, which again represents these soldiers as high class and more status then the prisoner. Finally the soldiers when first catching the prisoner addresses themselves as the king’s soldiers. This represents them as very high status and upper class, as they must be very high up and well respected to be the king’s soldiers.

Robin Hood is represented as lower class in comparison to the soldiers, but a quite a high status. This is shown through
