Verb Tense ReviewThe Importance of Time

Verb tense expresses the time of an eventor action. Time and how it is expressed inwriting is very important to English readers.

The English language has twelve differenttenses. In this lesson, we will review themeaning of each verb tense.



The Simple Present TenseExpresses a habit or often repeated action.

Adverbs of frequency such as, often, seldom, sometimes, never , etc. are used with thistense.

She goes to work everyday.

They always eat lunch together.



The Simple Present TenseThis tense also expresses general truths or

facts that are timeless.

Snow falls in the December in Minnesota.

Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.



The Present ProgressiveThis tense is used to describe an action that

is occurring right now (at this moment, today,this year, etc.). The action has begun and isstill in progress.

She is typing a paper for her class.

He can’t talk. He is fixing the sink right now.

The Present ProgressiveThe present progressive can also be used to

describe an action that is occurring in thepresent, but is temporary.

John is living in Modesto, but he might movesoon.



The Simple PastWe use the simple past to indicate exactly

when an action or event took place in the past.

I visited my sister yesterday.

We went out to dinner last night.



The Simple PastThe simple past is used to describe actions

and/or events that are now completed and nolonger true in the present.

I attended MJC in 1998. (I no longer attendMJC.)

I saw a movie every weekend when I was ateenager. (I don’t see movies very muchanymore.)

The Past ProgressiveThe past progressive is used to talk about

an activity that was in progress at a specificpoint of time in the past. The emphasis is onthe duration of the activity in the past.

I was studying for an exam while my mother wascooking dinner.

We were walking in the park around 7 p.m. lastnight.



The Past ProgressiveThe past progressive is often used with the

simple past to show that one action was inprogress when another action occurred.

I was taking a bath when the doorbell rang.They were eating dinner when the neighbors

stopped by for a visit.



The Present PerfectThe present perfect is used to talk about an

event that began in the past and continues upto the present.

Fran has lived in Rio for two years.(He began living in Rio two years ago and he still

lives there.)



They were friends for years

They have been friends foryears



The Present PerfectThe present perfect is also used to talk

about an event that was completed in the past,but the specific time of the event is notimportant.

I have seen that movie before.He has already visited Vietnam.

(Specific dates and times are not mentioned.)



Present Perfect ProgressiveThis tense is used to describe the duration

of an action that began in the past andcontinues into the present.

He has been studying grammar for an hour.She has been cooking all day.

(He is still studying and she is still cooking.)



Present Perfect ProgressiveThis tense is also used to describe events

that have been in progress recently and arerather temporary.

She has been living in Taiwan for the last twomonths, but she plans to move soon.



The Past PerfectThis tense describes completed events that

took place in the past before another pastevent.

The Titanic had received many warnings before ithit the iceberg.

I had already eaten when Fran stopped by to visitme.

Past Perfect ProgressiveThis tense is used to emphasize the

duration of an action that was completedbefore another action or event in the past.

Fran had been driving around the city for threehours before he finally found my house.

The FutureWill and be + going + to are often used to

describe future actions.

Fran will graduate in June.

Wallace is going to go to Canada next week.



The FutureThe simple present and present progressive

are also used to express future time. Theseare often used in connection with schedules.

Fran is meeting a new student at eleven o’clock.

The train leaves at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow.



The Future ProgressiveThis tense is used to describe an event or

action that will occur over a period of time at aspecific point in the future.

Fred and John will be working at PETROBRAS nextyear.

They will be moving their furniture out of the house

by the time you arrive tomorrow.

action that will be completed before anotherevent or time in the future.

another event or time in the future.

By the time he finishes law school, we will have

FIFA Fair Play

The generic concept of fair play is a fundamental part of the game of football.

It represents the positive benefits of playing by the rules, using common

sense and respecting fellow players, referees, opponents and fans. The

Fair Play Campaign was conceived largely as an indirect result of the 1986

FIFA World Cup™ in Mexico, when the handball goal by Diego

Maradona stimulated the admirable reaction of the England coach, Sir

Bobby Robson. Since then, the campaign has had the unconditional

support of former FIFA President João Havelange and his successor,current President Joseph S. Blatter. To give fair play more visibility,

FIFA created a programme that turned the generic notion into a simple

design and an easy to understand code of conduct that could be recognized

and respected by players and fans alike. Fair Play has a fundamental role

in sport and there is a need to apply it to all sporting activities, especiallychildren’s. Children need strong values to grow up with, and football,

being a team sport, makes them realize how essential discipline, respect,

team spirit and fair play are for the game and for life.
