Text and Texture: Calligraphic Marks and Nature

An important aspect of this workshop is to observe the beauty ofnature and to enjoy the experience of expressing our feelings intoour calligraphic art.

We will start by making lines and marks with different tools toimitate textures that are found in nature. Then we will developalphabets that correspond with those lines and marks. We willwrite our chosen text with this alphabet to make our own textures.Basic design layout and composition as well as usage of valueand mediums will be presented. We will make several experimentalcalligraphic pieces.

Text and Texture: Letterform Abstraction

The ‘Text and Texture’ workshops present writingand drawing text as calligraphic art. We willconcentrate on the process of developing texturesfrom forms of letters, and abstracting the meaningof text into the art.

In this workshop, we will start with designing ourown monoline letterforms to suit the meaning oftext. Then we will explore weighted forms based onthe form with different tools and mediums, and writetext with a different speed, rhythm and movement. We will experiment with how we can abstract formswith our expression.

Mix and Match

This session is all about breaking conventions of ornamentation. It’s a safe bet to put together stylised ivy leaf decoration withGothic, or Celtic knotwork with Half Uncial, but is there anythingto say that we can’t mix and match? What goes together and whatdoesn’t? Can stylized ornamentation be mixed with naturalistic? How do we know what looks right or wrong? A series of exercisesand discussions will explore the possibilities and, in working on aproject, everyone will be able to try something out of the ordinaryand gain the confidence to mix and match styles of decorationmore imaginatively in the future.

Pick and Mix

We often use our favourite colour medium simplybecause we like it and tend to know what it does, but isit always right for what we’re trying to achieve?

Whether for writing, backgrounds, or decoration – thispractical session will explore the properties of a rangeof media; their strengths and drawbacks, and how theireffects have a bearing on the final artwork. Everyonewill create a bank of trials, discovering which mediumworks best for a particular effect and also work on aproject using a suitable combination. This will enablefully informed, quick and confident decisions to bemade about which medium to pick and which to mixtogether.

We will begin with the basic Italic hand toestablish correct letterforms. We will then relax and createflourished and informal letter shapes. Experimental Italic can bebig and boisterous or delicate and gentle; it can be stretched ormanipulated with exciting effects and wonderful results. Writtenwords can express emotion by pressure, speed and rhythm. Bymanipulating the pen and our imaginations we will discover someexciting and challenging ways to create lively forms and flourishes.
