Notes:

SD2.1 All parties introduced themselves. Mr. Parker explained the various stages of the design and construction

process, and their current schedule. Mr. Parker noted that the design was to be based on Lakelands Park

Middle School, modified to meet the new program requirements and the current site conditions.

SD2.2 Mr. Cross reiterated all meeting were open to the public, who are encouraged to attend. Mr. Cross noted

that all comments, concerns or questions should be sent to himself or Nooshin Amirpour, and not directly

to the Architect.

SD2.3 A presentation was given by the Architect. A copy is attached to these minutes. The presentation included

a short description of experience of Grimm + Parker, a review of important features to be included in

school design, and a review of the results of the feasibility study. A discussion of environmental planning

philosophies were discussed, including energy efficiencies, site design elements, and acoustical design

considerations.. Building will be designed to LEED Silver level.

SD2.4 A revised site plan was shown. One way traffic pattern thru the main parking area creates greater car

stacking distance. Staff parking has been added in the bus loop area. Pedestrian access will be provided

from both Skylark Road and Little Seneca Parkway. Internal cross country paving will be provided. An

area for a future community garden was also shown. North/South building orientation is maintained.

SD2.5 A short review of programmatic changes from Lakelands Park Middle School was discussed. These

changes include larger science labs, including 2 additional science labs, 3 additional team rooms, additional

office spaces, an increase weight lifting room, and modification to the tech ed. lab. The home ec. Lab was

eliminated. A special education Bridge program is also included in the ed. spec.

SD2.6 Plan modifications were shown. The classroom wing was reorganized and stacked evenly on all floors.

Guidance was relocated to the opposite side of the east/west corridor and given an entrance onto the main

entry corridor. The additional auxiliary gym was added adjacent to the other auxiliary gyms. Teacher

planning areas are shown as a combined space per floor to increase the size of the rooms. Technology and

Multipurpose labs were relocated to the opposite side of the corridor from their previous location. The

Bridge program was incorporated where the staff lounge was in the previous design. The staff lounge was

relocated on the first floor. The two additional science labs were provided on the third floor.

SD2.7 A suggestion was made to use hybrid lighting (fluorescent lighting with fiberoptics feeding in natural light

into the rooms). MCPS and the Architect will investigate this type of lighting.

SD2.8 It was noted that a walkway will be needed on the west side of the parking lot and on the east side of the

bus loop connected to the sidewalk system along Little Seneca Parkway. A crosswalk will be added from

the west side walkway to the front sidewalk.

SD2.9 A suggestion was made that the toilet rooms near the media center may be better reoriented toward the

classroom wing. This would allow the media center to have more glass along the corridor. This will be

studied.

SD2.10 A suggestion was made to provide an outdoor eating/recreation area for lunch/break use. The entry from

the Skylark could be developed for this use.

SD2.11 A question about the funding for this project was raised. The project is currently funded for design and is

in the proposed CIP for the next year. The final decision will be made by the BOE and the County Council.

SD2.12 Concern was raised about the Staff Lounge being located so far from the classroom wing. However, it was

suggested that a small breakroom may be added in the core space if room permitted. The addition of a

kitchenette at the planning areas was also suggested. The Architect will explore options.

SD2.13 Ms. Amirpour noted that there were areas along the property boundary that were designated for the

community stormwater management use. The site plan may require slight modification to avoid these

easements.

SD2.14 There appeared to be consensus on both the site and building plan design direction from the participants.

1. The next schematic design workshop meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, November 15, 2012, at

3:00 p.m. at Rocky Hill Middle School.
