Clarinet Tryout Material Committee Meeting 11-14-10 Committee Members: Jan Cunningham, Sean Carrier, Sue Niven, Kaci Stirling, Kelly Johnson Proposal: To select new etudes for the All-Region and All-State clarinet audition material from a newer edition of the Rose Etude book. The Klose exercises for each set of audition material would remain unchanged. Rationale: The old edition of the Rose Etude book is full of mistakes and ambiguities, in addition to being out-of-print. The Artistic Studies – Book 1 – From the French School , edited by David Hite and published by Southern Music Co. is readily available, is more accurate, and is edited more clearly. It is currently used as the audition book in Texas. The Artistic Studies – Book 1 contains the 32 Rose Etudes included in the old Rose book, as well as 40 other Rose Etudes, and 9 Rose Caprices. This book also contains a glossary which explains the various terms used in the book. This feature would be a great help to teachers and students. Using this book will also allow us to have a greater selection of etudes to choose from and will keep us from duplicating etudes that are used by other instruments. The six etudes currently on the list have been unchanged for 50 years or more. The “tryout spots” are well-known and very predictable for both teachers and students. New etudes will eliminate this problem and will infuse some much-needed variety and energy into the clarinet audition process. The new etudes we have chosen are similar in difficulty to the old ones, and each set will still have a “fast” and a “slow” etude. We tried to choose contrasting etudes with multiple “tryout-worthy” sections in each. The etudes we propose are: Artistic Studies – Book 1 – From the French School , David Hite editor Southern Music Company #B362 (current price: $15.00) Set 1: Pages 94 & 95 #9 (m. 50 to the end) Page 49 #3 Set 2: Page 88 #6 (1 st page only) Page 64 #19 Set 3: Page 62 #17 Page 68 #23
