Planning Ideas When Shopping: Separate raw meat, poultry and seafood from other foods in
your grocery cart. Put these foods in plastic bags to prevent
their juices from dripping onto other foods. Separate these
foods in your grocery bags.
When Refrigerating Food: Place raw meat, poultry and seafood in containers or sealed
plastic bags to prevent their juices from dripping. Raw juices
often contain harmful bacteria. Store eggs in their original car-
ton and refrigerate.
When Preparing Food: Wash hands and surfaces often. Harmful bacteria can spread
throughout the kitchen. To present this...
wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds before
and after handling food and after using the bathroom, changing
a diaper or handling pets. Use hot soapy water and paper towel
or clean cloths to wipe up kitchen surfaces or spills. Wash
cloths often in the hot cycle of your washing machine. Wash
cutting boards, dishes and counter tops with hot soapy water
after preparing each food item and before you go on to the next
item. Use a clean cutting board. If possible use one cutting
board for fresh produce and a separate one for raw meat, poul-
try and seafood. Once cutting boards become excessively worn
or develop hard-to-clean grooves you should replace them.

As we go into the month of May I look forward to seeing the change in colors as the
spring flowers and flowering trees begin to bloom and show their colors. But along with the
spring flowers we can also be assured that it is also a season of insects returning to our area.
For those of us who do take care of our own yards and working outside, be sure to use sun-
screen and insect repellent. After being outside and working in the yard and getting your
flower beds and gardens ready, be sure to take time and check yourself for ticks.
The Car Show committee has already begun planning for the August event and four
concerts have been set up for the summer. Hopefully, we will be able to have some other
events for our members during the summer.
I want to wish all of our mothers a Happy Mother’s Day! Denise Liveston

MAY Mother’s Day
While the Mother’s Day that we celebrate on the 2nd Sunday in May is a
fairly recent development, the basic idea goes back to ancient mythology
… to the long ago civilizations of the Greeks and Romans.
The Greeks paid annual homage to Cybele, the mother figure of their
gods and the Romans dedicated an annual spring festival to the mother
of their gods.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating the 2nd
Sunday in May as a legal holiday to be called “Mother’s Day”… dedi-
cated “to the best mother in the world, your mother.”
For the first few years, the day was observed as a legal holiday, but in
absolute simplicity and reverence..church services were held in honor of
all mothers, living and dead.
Memorial Day Memorial Day is a poignant reminder of the tenacity of life.
We post the flag on this day; now your American flag rules.
On June 22, 1942, Congress passed a joint resolution, later amended on
December 22, 1942, that encompassed what has come to be known as
the U. S. Flag Code. Here are highlights:
Perhaps the most important rule involves how citizens should behave
around the Stars and Stripes: the flag of the United States is the emblem
of our identity as a separate nation, which the United States of America
has been for more than 200 years. Therefore, citizens should stand at
attention and salute when their flag is passing in a parade or being
hoisted or lowered.

Farmer’s 2019 Almanac
A tremendous “Thank You” is
extended to our volunteers!

we could not put on all of the events
that you enjoy.
