We are building a Collection of written and photographic items of historic value to Clare and region CLARE REGIONAL HISTORY GROUP NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2011 The Clare Regional History Group is working hard to compile a photographic collection focussing on Transport thanks to a grant of $3000 received from History SA through its SA 175 program. Named “History's Highways”, the project will produce at least 30 large scale mounted photographs exploring the links between transport and the development of the region. However, this project is much more than a collection of car photographs. The History's Highways project will be a photographic representation of the relationship between people's lives an Stroll along the Highways of History d various modes of transport. The project looks at all forms of transport ranging from the earliest explorers who walked or used camels or horses, to horsedrawn vehicles and bullock wagons, bicycles, cars, trains, trucks, agricultural vehicles and planes. The project will divide the past 175 years into 30 year blocks with about five photographs allocated to each block. All photographs will be identified and some will include accompanying text to highlight the role transport has played in the development of the region thus providing a human face to transport. The public has already responded enthusiastically to the project, with community sponsorship in excess of $3500, in addition to offering access to a wide range of family or business photographs. These include school projects, business records, holiday snapshots as well as advertising and commercial records. There was a real buzz of excitement and anticipation at a Sponsor's Reception held on April 14, during Heritage Week 2011, where sponsors and supporters had the opportunity to see some of the photographs that may be included in the final collection. Copies of the photographs had been displayed in time order, ie 18401870, 18701900 etc. This initial viewing encouraged many people to do their own research and come up with even more photographs to be considered for inclusion. Members have been researching the photographic collection of both the Regional History Group and the Clare branch of the National Trust, as well as other sources to ensure a wide variety of photographs are available for selection for the collection. The completed photographs will provide an enduring, portable and highly visible collection that will be on display at various events and venues throughout the district. If you have any photographs featuring any aspect of transport, ranging from a family day at the beach with a car in the background to a young teenager leaning against his pride and joy – the latest model Charger! Please contact Clare Regional History Group. Sue Wurst

NEWS FROM THE GROUP

History’s Highways Project

As outlined on page 1, we  seek photos  related  to transport over the years.

Historic Markers

This project,  to erect plaques on historic buildings in  Clare’s  Main  Street  and  Old  North  Road,  has been  in the planning for over two years. As we go to press, nine development applications are before Council  staff.  The  unveiling  is  planned  for  Friday 27th May at 3pm, but a few boxes have to be ticked before then,  including the construction & powder‐coating  of  two  stands,  for  buildings  that  cannot have the plaque placed on their walls. If you would like to attend, please contact us closer to the date.

History Month 2011

Our first event was the opening of Wolta Wolta to the  public  on  Sunday  1 May,  in  cooperation with the  owner, Robert Parker,  and  the Clare National Trust Museum. 77 people visited the historic home and  grounds,  enjoying  afternoon  tea  provided  by hardworking History Group members and friends. In addition to this event, we are promoting access to the Collection in our usual hours on Thursdays in May,  and  the  unveiling  of  the  Historic  Markers (above).

Computer network

Chronic  problems with  the  network  and  internet are  currently  being  addressed.  The  purchase  of  a server  and  cabling  of  three  wireless  computers should result in a reliable system in the near future.

Display areas

Last  year  we  purchased  a  free  standing  display system  to  enhance  the  entrance  to  the  History Collection, and enable a portable display at events. To  this  we  have  recently  added  a  2  metre  high banner, which  is usually placed at  the  foot of  the stairs when the Collection  is open, but  is also very portable  for  events.  Its  first  outing  was  to  the verandah of Wolta Wolta during our  recent Open Day.

Plans  are  now  in  place  to  purchase  six  square display  boards  which  will  be mounted  along  the wall above the stairs as you go up to the Collection.

These  will  initially  be  used  for  the World War  I display,  and  our  History’s  Highways  transport project.

World War I research

Helen was  approached  to help with  research  into the background of  local World War  I soldiers for a DVD  to  be  displayed  at  the  Clare  Anzac  service. Forty  soldiers  are  remembered  on  the Memorial Arch at the Clare Oval, and it proved a challenge to trace  the  identity  of  them  all.  This  research  has now been communicated in three ways: the Anzac Day DVD, on pages 3 – 6 of this newsletter, and in a large  display  at  the History  Room, where  one A4 page is devoted to each man.

Digital Copy Camera

After  a  lot  of  pondering  and  some  research with camera  experts,  the  curator  has  suggested  a system  to  more  easily  copy  documents  and volumes.  Based  on  the microfilming  projects  that the History Group carried out over 20 years ago, an SLR digital camera will be set up on our copy stand, linked  to  the  power  supply  (to  avoid  using batteries)  and  cabled  to  a  laptop  computer.  The image on  the computer screen will  reflect what  is seen  through  the  camera  lens.  A  click  of  the computer mouse will take the photo. Hopefully this will  enable many  pages  to  be  photographed  in  a short  time, and will be  ideal  for resources such as Council assessments and minute books. It is hoped that this system will be in place within a month.

We are building a Collection of written and photographic items of historic value to Clare and region

NEWS FROM THE GROUP  History’s Highways Project

As outlined on page 1, we seek photos related to transport over the years. Historic Markers

This project, to erect plaques on historic buildings in Clare’s Main Street and Old North Road, has been in the planning for over two years. As we go to press, nine development applications are before Council staff. The unveiling is planned for Friday 27th May at 3pm, but a few boxes have to be ticked before then, including the construction & powder-coating of two stands, for buildings that cannot have the plaque placed on their walls. If you would like to attend, please contact us closer to the date.

History Month 2011 Our first event was the opening of Wolta Wolta to the public on Sunday 1 May, in cooperation with the owner, Robert Parker, and the Clare National Trust Museum. 77 people visited the historic home and grounds, enjoying afternoon tea provided by hardworking History Group members and friends. In addition to this event, we are promoting access to the Collection in our usual hours on Thursdays in May, and the unveiling of the Historic Markers (above).

Computer network Chronic problems with the network and internet are currently being addressed. The purchase of a server and cabling of three wireless computers should result in a reliable system in the near future.

Display areas Last year we purchased a free standing display system to enhance the entrance to the History Collection, and enable a portable display at events.

World War I research Helen was approached to help with research into the background of local World War I soldiers for a DVD to be displayed at the Clare Anzac service.

Digital Copy Camera After a lot of pondering and some research with camera experts, the curator has suggested a system to more easily copy documents and volumes.
