Setting up a vacuum system

Vacuum supply:A modular vacuum unit with

Vacuum distributor, connection unit or safety appliance:Distribution of operating vacuum to thechucks. Gauges, choice of manual ormagnetic valves and pressure controls forwatching over operating vacuum level. Allthese variations are available.

Depending on your operation Witte offers different vacuum supply systems:

Handheld pumps / Pumps Standard solution, almost all of which can be used together Pages 8 and 9 with our liquid separators if fluids are used during machining.

Vacuum units In addition to the pumps mentioned above the vacuum units Pages 10 and 11 also have an additional vacuum tank as well as various safety devices.

Modular vacuum unit In addition to the pump and tank the modular vacuum units Pages 12 and13 also have an integrated liquid separator and various safety devices.

Vacuum units

Radial compressors can be used when mechani-cal forces involved during machining are low, or when a high loss of vacuum occurs i.e.

Witte VAC-MATTM

The vacuum system you can cut right into!

All vacuum chucks have a common factor. In orderto maintain their clamping function, air leaks mustbe avoided at all cost. With VAC-MATTM it’s different.VAC-MATTM s properties allow the operator to cutor drill right through the mat and machine contours,without losing vacuum.To clamp simply place the mat on the special VAC-MATTM chuck and press the workpiece onto the mat.

No seals are required, no covering over with foil,no suction bores to block off, all these procedu-res are not applicable when using VAC-MATTM.VAC-MATTM allows cutting or drilling rightthrough as well as contour milling of workpiecesthrough to their base.

Certain workpiece sizes can even be machinedon 5-sides in one clamping procedure, therebyconsiderably reducing idle times compared toconventional clamping methods.

VAC-MATTM Application

What is VAC-MATTM?It is a thin soft polymer mat with manyspaced out vacuum points, suckers indifferent sizes with a fine hole in eachcentre and a raised lip. On the undersidethere are six lugs which locate in thespecial VAC-MAT TM chuck. Further thereare grid shaped grooves which distributethe vacuum to each of the small holes. Alip right around the outside edge ensuresno leakage.

What size is VAC-MATTM?All VAC-MATs are 2,5x200x 300mm.The tolerance lies at +/-0,02mm. Toincrease the size of the working area, themodular VAC-MAT TM chucks are connec-ted to one another and VAC-MAT TM s aresimply placed on as described.

Is VAC-MAT TM reusable?The working life of a VAC-MATTM

depends on the number and size of cutsmade into the mat during machining.

What kinds of VAC-MAT TM

are available?There are 4 types of mat available:❍ Blue mats, standard for normal

machining❍ Green mats, slightly harder in

consistency for heavier machining❍ Red mats, only to be used once❍ Black mats, are used to seal the

areas not required on the VAC-MAT TM

chucks during machining.

VAC-MAT TM allows fast and economicalmachining with only one clamping proce-dure. Not only is clamping very fast butbreak-outs, deburring and hand finishing become a thing of the past.

One of the commonest vacuum chucks sinceclamping with vacuum was discovered is the gridchuck. This type of chuck is used for clamping simplegeometrically shaped workpieces with or withoutcutouts. Special seals laid out according to theworkpiece contour (but incorporating the vacuumsupply bore) help to even out pronounced une-ven or rough surfaces, whilst still securelyholding the workpiece during the application.

Slot vacuum chucks and rubber adapter mat

Simply follow steps 1-5 and acustom built fixture is ready inseconds. When vacuum is swit-ched on the mat and the work-piece are sucked down together.The excellent friction values offerespecially good resistance todisplacement forces duringmachining.

Using the slot chuck with therubber adapter mat allows dril-ling of holes and milling or cut-ting of pockets and cutouts intothe mat to a depth of 1,5mmwithout losing vacuum. As themat suffers hardly any wear andtear it can be used often forworkpieces with the same con-tour.Certain applications allow thetool to work to depths of 1,5mminto the mat.Height tolerance of the mats liein the range of +/-0,3mm. (DIN 7715, part Kl. P2)

Application

Lay the rubber adapter mat onto thechuck covering all the slots.

Position workpiece with the help of adju-stable end stops. Then draw round thecontour using an ordinary pen

Slot vacuum chucks - special versionsSlot vacuum chucks for workpieces withcomplicated geometrical forms, also withcut-outs i.e. screens; ideal for lightmachining operations like engraving orgrinding etc.The vacuum supply is connected to amoveable hose within the plate. In orderto reduce the area affected by vacuumthe hose is pulled towards the user andthe end sealed with a plastic chip putinto the plate between the lines marked.All slots can be covered also usingcovering foil (accessories). On the sameprinciple as the rubber adapter mat, theworkpiece contour is traced onto the foil.The foil within the contour is then slitusing a knife resulting in a custom builtfixture in seconds.By using adapter plates it is also possibleto create multiple fixtures

This aluminium foil is a recommended accessory for everyslot chuck. Application: ❍ cover the chuck completely with the foil❍ lay workpiece on to chuck in area nearest vacuum

Clamping by freezing on a thin water film

Workpieces can now be clamped for machiningsimply, accurately and tension-free using ice.Place the workpiece on the previously cooledplate and spray a thin film of water onto plate andworkpiece. Approximately 90 seconds later theworkpiece is frozen to the working surface. Expe-rience has shown that a temperature of –10° hasproven to be ideal for freeze clamp technology. At–10° the ice has not yet become brittle andcracked. By using custom-built adapter platesworkpieces are positioned and clamped withrepeatable accuracy. The use of coolants shouldbe avoided during machining. If this is not possi-ble we will gladly suggest or quote alternatives.We differentiate between two alternative methodsof freezing workpieces:

1.) Ice-Vice©-System

1.1) The so-called Ice-Vice clamping system com-prises of two main components, the cooling unitand the freeze plate. With the help of integratedelectronics a closed cooling system within thesetwo components controls the temperature, whichcan be chosen freely and the set value remainswithin a tolerance of +/-2°. Sensors check thisprocedure constantly. The ideal temperature isgiven at –10°. The micro electronic controls checkall functions.

1.2) Two freeze plates can be connected simulta-neously to the cooling unit. This means two inde-pendant freeze plates can be used on two differentmachining centres.

1.3) After setting the ideal temperature accordingto experience, accuracy of +/-3µ can be achievedon the workpiece after machining.

1.4) Freezing the workpiece to the plate takes 90seconds. Thawing is supported by a heating car-

tridge (integrated in the freeze plate) and requiresapproximately the same amount of time. Ice-Vice© freeze plates can also be supplied witha vacuum connection for clamping workpiece spe-cific adapter plates in order to shorten clampingcycles. This works best when one freeze plate isin use on the machine while the other plate is in afreezing or thawing modus.

2. Ice-Vice© AFP System(Air Freeze Plate)

2.1) Cold air is produced by feeding in and com-pressing air at min 6 bar. This chuck can beconnected to any available air compressor. Inorder to achieve the required -6° – -10°C approx.6 bar of compressed air is necessary (these valuesare valid for an environment temperature of 20°C,but also for the temperature of the compressedair).

2.2) By using a switch the compressed air insidethe AFP plate can be changed round so that thecompressed air warms the plate in order to thawthe ice.

2.3) The AFP system is also available for use on alathe it has a steel base that can be clamped on amagnatc worktable.

As in many other technical procedures the ideafor development of freeze clamp technologycame from nature itself.

During clamping with Ice-Vice systems workpie-ces are frozen tight onto a chuck for machiningby a capillary film of water. Also for relativelyuneven workpieces the gaps are filled completelywith water and thereby fozen. The FLIP-PODTM vacuum clampingsystem has been developed forclamping large workpieces in alumi-nium, plastics or wood.This system can be used on CNCmilling or grinding machines.

The cross section drawing shows how the pods work.Simply „flipping“ them over puts them in working position. They areautomatically switched on when the operator turns them over. Allactive pods stand 26mm above the pod plate surface, allowing con-tour milling and recess cutting on the outer contours.

Fixed and retractable locator podsensure high accuracy. Locator pods are available in both fixed andretractable versions, either of which fit in any pod cavity.After positioning the workpiece the retractable pods are drawn backinto the pod plate as soon as vacuum is switched on, allowing a freepath for the cutting tool.

Alu FLIP-PODTM has an accurate, defined workpiece surface.Height tolerance is only 50µ. They are suitable for face machining onboth surfaces, especially of metallic workpieces.

The German Employer’s Liability Insurance Asso-ciation demands that machines having power-operated workpiece clamping devices must bedesigned and installed in such a way that the dri-ving spindle or feed mechanism can only beactivated after completing the fixing or clampingprocedure.

The safety appliance is a must for all jobs onheavy-duty machines and can be integrated intothe machine controls.

When the vacuum drops below the pre-set value(infinitely adjustable) a visual signal is given. Thebuilt-in dead changer is integrated into themachine controls and sets off an emergencystop of spindle or feedstop.The range between maximum and minimumvacuum is 70 mbar.

This version with magnetic valve allows theclamping procedure to be activated from themachine control panel.

Witte Metapor CE 100 WHITE is an extremely fine porousmaterial with a pore size smaller than BF 100 or MC 100.The surfaces is white and easily workable.The material on the whole is very homogenous in its poro-sity. It has proven to be very useful in silicon-wafer produc-tion, also as a surface for „air handling equipment“, wherethe even distribution of the air flow promotes a vibrationfree gliding of the glide material.
