music. He gave me that from the beginning. Our mutual respect continues to grow. N - I got to know him better and realized he may be quiet, but he has a great inner strength. I admire him a great deal.

6. M - Do you have plans to do another CD? K - Yes, he has some CDs he is completing now and has asked me to listen to them. After they are finished, we would like to do another. I already have ideas for music and packaging. N - Yes, we have just completed my Arabic Rhythms Volume 2 CD for training dancers. We will also continue to work together as we both have tons of ideas.

NOW FOR ABOUD I'S INPUT- I asked him basically the same questions, but wanted his input on working with the two female dancers .

I . M . Why the recording business? A . Recording was something I have always wanted to do since 1973 when I purchased my first portable cassette recorder. I was fascinated by the fact that a simple push of the button can preserve sound for generations to come.

2.M. Why creating over other people 's music? A. Creating music gives me a sense of fulfillment and allows me to relive the feelings that made me create it.

3. M . Why did you choose to work with those you have? A.I enjoy working with people I know and have worked with for a long time. The musicians and producers were efficient and patient; two elements that are a definite must in any studio or recording environment.

4. M. How did you pick the pieces for both artists? They are both so different! W. Writing music is based on feelings that come from memories or situations. Some music can be written to fit a certain personality, as well but personality is a hard thing to detect in the audio by the average listener. I think the emotions that create certain music can be interpreted as a close representation of the influences left on the writer by the subject .

5. M. How was this different from live stage work? A. Working with Katia and Nourhan in the studio is very different form the live stage where one can correct things by a wink or an arm signal. In the studio, you can spend hours and sometimes days working on a single or a few phrases. Any overlooked glitches will be imprinted in your audio for the whole world to hear over and over. Both ladies endured and smiled their way through the rough moments.

6. M. Do you have future plans or recording? A. Yes, I do. I just finished Lebanese Rhythms Vol. 2 for Nourhan. The next two CDs are self produced: I. Arabic Maqams, a teaching tool for Arabic scales and their affects on music and mood. 2. Harat Al Rawaq. On the Oriental fusion side, we have released two this past summer.

My final word is that Aboudi was always fun to work with. He was always willing to learn the music we dancers wanted. But, he was always dabbling in his own thing. He is a sweetheart and one of the most talented composers there is. I am very proud to know him and tell you about this artist. These recordings are good for both students, teachers, and the professional. For more information, you may contact me through www.DancerAndDrummer.com.

2. M - Why did you pick Aboudi? K - He had done a couple of CDs for singer George Chamoun and then Nourhan had asked him to do a dancer ' s CD. It was a natural progression after working with him for so long ... it seemed the next logical step in our dancer-musician relationship. We felt we knew each other well enough. We had been part of so many steps in each other's careers. N - I was working with him a lot. We got along really well and he asked me to listen to some compositions. He is incredibly talented and nobody was aware he was composing.

3. M - Did you help choose the musicians? K - I had complete trust in Aboudi and most of the musicians had also been part of my dancing careers in nightclubs, Near East Dance Theater shows, seminar shows, and hafli's. I would have chosen exactly the same people. N - It was the regular band and we were working together a lot. We were in a groove and the CD is a snapshot in time of my career and a highlight of working with live musicians.

4. M - How were the pieces picked? K - The title piece "Youm el Farrah" was something that Aboudi had been working on for a long time. He said he was waiting for some one who believed in it. "Bint el Hijaz" was a collaboration between Aboudi and Moustapha. The other pieces were written for me. "Katia ti Saiid" was my idea and I had the most input on this piece. It was a process in which I learned a lot about

music. Aboudi is very patient to work with. N - Aboudi chose them for me and I believed in him. He wrote all the music for me and it was me at the time. We helped each other create and this is now part of our history as artists.

5. M.- How was it different with Aboudi as a creator in a studio over working with him as a musician on stage? K - For us, it was similar because we value each other's opinion and want to come out with a good product. I was amazed at his technical knowledge of sound reproduction. Of course, he does have an engineering degree.

.,., On my part, I was very careful to listen to what he had created and to keep an open mind as the music was from his creative genius. He also valued my opinion. I wanted music that Aboudi, who knew me as a dancer, would write to reflect my style and taste in

Anyone who has purchased either Katia in Youm el Farrah, produced by Katia Nordgren of Boston, or Belly Dance with Nourhan Sharif, produced by Nourhan Sharif ofNYC, has heard of Aboudi. He was nominated for best recording at the 2001 International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance in Los Angeles. I thought you might be interested in knowing more about him as he is a very talented individual and has a little insight into the business of producing and creating music. Aboudi is fast becoming a household name in the dance circle.

About Aboudi Badawi: Born Abdallah Badawi in Lebanon in the Northern town of Amoun in 1957, his first interest in music started at age 6 and was greatly influenced by an uncle. By age 9, he was performing and continued to play accordion into the seventies, heavily influenced by the Rhabani Brothers and the music of the late Halim Hafez and Oum Koulthoum ofEgypt. After a short period in Kuwait in 1976, he arrived in Boston to attend college (1977). By 1978, he was playing at the Continental Restaurant on a weekly basis with other local musicians. At this time he met Amira, Katia, Morwenna and Nara Yaout who comprised the Middle Eastern Village Folk Dancers directed by Morwenna. He was completely surprised to see Western girls dancing to Arabic music with such passion. He continued playing and joined the group Al Badiah Band. At this time, he started playing the Arabic Org, and he started teaching piano throughout the Lebanese community. During the same era, he played in most of the Arabic clubs where he worked with Boston's finest musicians. In 1988 he recorded his first demo tape ofFeiruz and Rahbani music.

In the early 1990's he did theater shows with Bostona 's Near East Dance Theater and performed in NYC for the Late Ibrahim Farrah and for Yousry Sharif. He has performed with many top Middle Eastern stars.

Aboudi is an active composer and he has produced many CD's for George Chamoun, Nourhan Sharif, and Katia- all with original compositions. Aboudi has currently completed his recording Studio (STIJDIO 15) with the latest digital equipment and produced various projects from demos to professional level teaching tapes.

I interviewed Aboudi, Katia, and Nourhan. The questions were basically the same. Then, Walid and I have added our own comments. I wanted you to get a full perspective on this very talented and amazingly fine person. NOTE:TheA represents Aboudi Badawi. The K represents Katia. The M represents Morwenna Assaf. The N represents Nourhan Sharif and the W represents Walid Assaf. Interview with Katia and Nourhan by Morwenna Assaf!

I. M- What made you go into the recording business? Katia- I just decided to collaborate with Aboudi on making Youm el Farrah which somehow seemed a natural thing to do. Nourhan - He asked me. He told me he was greatly inspired by my dancing. I trust him completely. Whenever he is there, I know I am protected. When he is there, everything will be OK.

ALww ME To INTRonucE MYSELF!

Hi SAMEDA members! My name is Kate Lyon. I have been a SAMEDA member for two and a half years and I have been belly dancing for three years under the name Kalea. I felt that I could make a contribution to The Papyrus because I am earning a degree as a copyeditor and feature writer from UCSD. This is my first month as the advertising director of The Papyrus. It has been a little overwhelming so far, but I am sure that I will get the hang of it pretty soon. I am working closely with Dave Dhillon and he has been a great mentor. Say "hi" to me when you see me in different classes and feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

As I was driving home from work the other day, a familiar song came on the radio - one that I recall as being one of my favorites . As the voices sang about a summer breeze and their tidy little house and porch, I joined in, "And I come home from a hard day's work, and she 's waiting there - not a care in the world!" And I thought, "Well! Wasn 't THAT a fun little excursion back to the dark ages!"

Any sociologist will tell you that the lives of American men and women are immensely more complicated today than even twenty years ago. Few people are more aware of this complexity than our former board member/secretary, Donna Dutton. With two small children, a husband, a parent and a demanding job (all requiring her attention) it's a wonder that she is still sane. In an effort to preserve that condition, Donna made the difficult decision to resign from her position on the board of directors for SAMEDA. She regrets this, and certainly plans to keep in touch and help out when she can.

In addition to ministering to her family's needs, which include new baby Diana who was born last November, Donna works as a biologist. Having attended college with many biology majors (who are now employed in such diverse occupations as "Manager of the Luggage Department"), I talked with her about how she managed her career and I asked her if she was, in fact, doing what she "always wanted to do." The answer was "yes!" She spoke of her career evolution from interning with a professor to her current glamorous-sounding job of studying the leatherback sea turtles in the Virgin Islands. If you see her, she will no doubt try to tell you just how unglamorous counting turtle eggs can be, but Donna, please don't burst my bubble! I'm in complete awe!

She described a path that included studying with some really sharp instructors, hard work, flexibility, and the luck of being in the right place at the right time. Hmmm. Sounds like the formula for success in our field!

Speaking of our field , Donna learned to dance when the style was (as she tells it) "Lean as far back as you can .. . " She had to curb her dance activities while she was starting her family (priorities, you know!). She was reluctant to step into the shoes of"Acting President" until a new president could be elected because she felt that the board should be led by a currently-active dancer. But, when the board experienced a large turnover of officers, Donna's soft Texas-lilt and calm-but-firm manner helped to ease the board through a transition that could have been a crisis situation. I know she'll still be part of the dance community, but I also know that the rest of the board and I will miss her presence very much, perhaps one day when family issues are more settled and children are a little older. Until then, we wish you luck, Donna. See you at the SAMEDA Faires!

Fortunately, I had extended the day for an extra hour so we had plenty of time to enjoy them and the dancers scheduled for after the live music. They sang songs of peace in keeping with the world climate. Afterwards, at the Greek Palace, they worked the house. On Sunday, my regular bBedouin Bazaar Band featuring John Bilezikjian with Dave Dhillon and Richard Steiger livened up the day with their enthusiastic playing. This year in honor of our renewed patriotism, I wore a red, white, and blue costume for the finale. John and Dave later perfonned at the After Hours Party at the Greek Palace. Also on Sunday, we had the added event of a drum circle on the second floor. It was led by Frank Lazarro and enjoyed by the upstairs vendors and dancers who wanted to dance to live drumming.

This year's winners of the $50 dancer's raffle were Kareenah El Succor on Saturday, and Jheri St. James on Sunday. The dancer raffle is unique to my event. All dancers have a chance of winning $50 on the day they perform. Another unique concept is the vendor raffle. Each vendor that has been with me for 5 or more years has a chance of winning a free table for next year. Audrena won this year- she is a two-time winner. Next year, Audrena's International Bazaar will have seven tables! Many others won wonderful raffle prizes donated by the generous vendors, and by Raven and Zephirah.

I'd like to thank everyone who came, especially those who supported the vendors by making purchases and examining their spectacular wares. In spite of the uncertainty in the world, the Bedouin Bazaar went off without a hitch. The seminars were well attended, the perfonnances were some of the best ever, and the shoppers were delighted with their purchases.

I received many comments and letters from those who came about how much they enjoyed the Bazaar. Many of the vendors remarked on the high quality of our local San Diego talent. We have some of the finest dancers living here, so it is always easy for me to present good shows- thanks to their support and willingness to perform at my events. I also have many top-quality, professional dancer friends who come to perform from other areas such as Los Angeles, Orange County, and Northern California. Since this is mostly a labor oflove, it's nice to hear how much I'm appreciated for my efforts.

This year was much more relaxed for me because I didn ' t have to prepare the food- Kayla's Food Cart took over that chore. They were very pleased with the patronage and gave me some much needed Hostess cupcakes to sustain me during the long hours of the Bazaar and After Hours Party. Dave Dhillon provided the sound system, which left my Friday and Monday free (no pick up or return). It was a much better sound system than we've had before. Richard Steiger took total charge of running the sound and playing the tapes and CDs for the dancers, and setting up the sound for the Jive music.

My stress level was further reduced by all the volunteers and my reliable staff. Thanks to Randwulf, Je-Nell, Louise, Alia, Tim, Abhi, and those who helped on the spot as the need arose. I especially want to thank my regular staff of Toni, Dottie, and Richard, who helped with setup, ticket sales, MC, and sound. Richard, again, produced the graphics used at the event as well as the program. Thanks to my family for all their help and support. My son, Zod, has helped every year with loading and unloading whatever needed it (at an ungodly early hour for him), and does so without complaint. My mom, Kakie, flew out again this year from Maryland to help. She was undeterred by the increased flight security. She also has become great friends with Toni and Dottie. The three of them were a hit during open dancing at the Greek Palace, the party after the Bazaar. My sister, Jinx, and her daughter, Errika, took over the front desk, greeting everyone with enthusiasm.

A big thank you goes out to this year 's seminar instructors for a job well done, not only in teaching, but also promoting the event. Claudia Immerzeel and Jean Durante ofTandemonium presented classical Persian on Saturday and Tribal Persian on Sunday. Their seminars included copious notes as well as dance steps. Judeen taught veil dancing and drum solos on Saturday. Sunday's class included sword dancing with floor performance. Judeen is well known for her expertise in these areas, and has been the recipient of several awards. As a change of pace, Louise (Sohaila's mom) led her students in some hot salsa and meringue dancing. Now that we have

It is essential to learn the basics and learn them well. The execution of dance is primarily technique. Once you have technique, you then learn what constitutes ethnic dance or a dance from a culture. And you, of course, then put yourself in the dance and your personality comes through. Classes should be at different levels. This means a teacher offers placement and basic step vocabulary and reinforces by repetition. Dance steps build one on another, it is important to know the basics and learn them well, before progressing. Adults tend to get impatient, but need to realize that, unlike academic studies, dance is just not learned, but has to be honed and perfected. This alone can be a very satisfying experience. Just because you know a movement does not mean you can put it aside and learn a knew one. Building and using it in different combinations makes it better and more beautiful. Plus, you have to be able to use it in different ways. Dance is movement, but movement with technique. Before one can fly across the room with a veil and look beautiful, one needs to undergo years of basics with stretching and strengthening the whole body. You have to have strength and control.

Not everyone wants to be a dancer. Some just want to relax and exercise. This is very valid. We all have different reasons for studying dance. But, the same principles hold true. If you put into practice what you have learned, then you are strengthening the body. Some adults pick up movement naturally, some don't. Movement- the essence of dance---comes from the inside out. Some people have to be encouraged to dance. Adults who are competitive by nature tend to bring this to dance class and feel like they are not progressing fast enough. Hold on! Your inadequacies are surfacing. Dance should not be competitive. Or, should not be. It is totally about you and not anyone else.

You also do not need to take the same class every week. Take a different class at a different time on a different day. You might find the dynamics different and enjoyable. If you have or are recovering from an injury, make sure the instructor is aware. The goal not is only to teach merely fitness, but also to assure there is fitness without injury.

In reference to adults performing, is this realistic? Yes, in our dance form yes! There are some things to think about though before you decide to jump in. Dance is a performing art, not just fitness techniqu. And to some degree, every class is a performance in which you are expected to do your best. At some level of training, you may desire to perform on stage. Don't be too shy to explore the

( February 2002 T HE. F AFYRUS 1 7 )

opportunities. Performing reflects positively on your teacher. It is never too late to pursue something you love, as long as you are realistic about it. Know where you belong and at what level.

There is also more to dance than perfonning. Performing in our business is very complex. There are recitals where students perform and showcases where students dance solo in a restaurant to get exposure. Don't confuse these with professional situations. There is a world of difference and the audiences ' expectations are very different. So are those of the people who hire you. Make sure you are ready for that next level. Most dancers study seriously for years, and even after making the decision and commitment to pursue a career in dance, still study. Always observe to see if you are ready. Ifnot, be patient and good to yourself.

Make sure you know all there is to know. We have such a diverse dance form. The basics of all are the same - good dance technique! For me, this means a solid foundation in Arabic dance. I call it this because it is not just Egyptian, Turkish, folk, cabaret, or anything else you can think of. It is the foundation so you can do anything, branch out into anything you want. Learn it right and do it well. It is your dance. Have respect for the culture it comes from, never disrespect this. As westerners we have taken this dance and made it ours but it is still their dance . Their national dance; their social dance, their performing dance. Do not discredit this. Know the music, study it and understand it. Know the correct costuming, know the history, and know the background. Hazy as it is, there is protocol.

Take this dance and treat it with love and respect so that you can go far no matter what your interest or decisions are. Never, under any circumstances, waiver in your aesthetics. Enjoy this, our dance form, to the fullest at whatever level you are or want to be.

I wanted music that Aboudi, who knew me as a dancer, would write to reflect my style and taste in
