Information

This year we went to an exhibition at Witte de With with our class. The nameof this exhibition was SHORT BIG DRAMA, and it was by artist Angela

Bulloch. We saw this in the Center for Contemporary Art. The exhibition was open from January 21th until the 9th of April.

A review on this:

There is more than meets the eye to Angela Bulloch’s work. Her solo exhibition  SHORT BIG DRAMA at Witte de

With, Center for Contemporary Art plays with this red herring – the illusion of simplicity – and highlights the

theatricality of Bulloch’s practice. Focusing on three types of works – namely her monumental wall paintings,

colorful pixel installations and interactive drawing machines  – SHORT BIG DRAMA presents a selection of

existing works together with specially commissioned new pieces.

In this exhibition, contradiction takes center-stage and reveals the inherent beauty of Bulloch’s complex artworks.

Playing with the nature of drama, whether epic or mundane, big or short, the project adapts the form of a play to

structure a sequence of commissions and a new suite of works by the artist. For Witte de With, Bulloch interprets

and manipulates earlier potentially clashing installations into a seemingly harmonious whole.

SHAPE

The artworks were all contemporary and abstract and therefore unrealistic. For

example this bunch of block on

the picture, it had nothing to dowith realism.

As abstract art this is notfigurative either.

There is no logical or realisticpoint in this form of art.

The artwork were partly 2- and 3dimensional.

The blocks were for instance 3

dimensional while the paintingunder this was 2 dimensional.

The 2 dimensional artwork was, as I suppose done with templates and paint. The 3 dimensional works were done with a very difficult technique, usingelectricity and lights. Those were put in a wooden box and colour filters wereused to make them change colours. For the artworks a lot of different materials were used.

I find this very eye catching and very interesting, but I still see this as sort of IKEA style. I am not very respectful to contemporary art, I know. But I miss

the ability to see the beauty and purity in modern art, when you barely seethe craftwork. I want pretty details, something worked on. Everybody is ableto paint letters on a wall and some electricians could have made disco-lightboxes as well.

MEANING

According to me, this artwork is based onmanipulation. The boxes change to colour to

affect your mood, the painting here underreacted on sound or movement, (pretty cool)so if you stood up this started painting inanother way, if the rhythm changed thesame.

The words on the wall also made you think ina different way about things.

The title says SHORT BIG DRAMA, and Idon’t know why, but it sounds catchy so Isuppose that is the reason.

I think the artist tried to make her own

opinion clear trough her artworks like mostartist. Also I think it is sort of sarcastic abouthow the world works.

Her opinion probably is that it is not hard to manipulate people and things, neitherto be manipulated.

OPINION

I wasn’t impressed by this art. I think it was not special nor interesting. In fact Iwas bored. I have respect for art, not for most modern art, it looks like there wasn’t

any time, things were just done for: O HEY LET’S MAKE ART! And not becausethere was an interesting concept or plan.
