OPINION AND EXTRA INFORMATION

What is happening:Performance  This ballet is performed in a quick way. The theme is generally light. If it would

be compared with, for instance, Swan Lake or Giselle, it could be called happy. No one dies, the music is cheerful. There are much allegro’s. Because of the oftenretuning humor the dramatically forbidden love is lightened up and at the endeverybody leaves the theater full with joy.

The stage image The atmosphere that is created is very warm Spanish. The scenery is mostly setup as a plaza/market, and in a library from where out the plaza can be seen.In the second act the scenery moves to a little colder-looking mountain to atheatre troupe. Don Quichot has his nightmare, and then the vision starts, in

which the décor is fresh and mostly green. The costumes are brightly colored, in red, yellow, orange, brown, blue and pink.Only in the vision all costumes are white.Southern attributes such as castanets, guitars, knifes and fans are used.

The dancing The dancers are never alone on stage. There are a lot of scenes in which thedancers make the same movements at the same time, (unison dancing) or theleading characters do a pas de deux or a solo, while the other dancers are in thebackground, making basic movements such as putting their hands on their waist, cross their legs or “talk” with each other, while watching the dancer. In thisperformance students of the ballet academy are involved, as children, whichmakes the atmosphere more realistic. They come back in the dream as angels.

The music The music leads the performance, though in the background. The music isobviously present, but still the dancers are more outstanding than the music.

The theatre. The orchestra is under the lowest seats and they cannot see the stage. The seats are arranged in a rainbow shape around the stage. There are 1594

seats in the Music Theatre, 11 seats for the disabled and 75 seats for theorchestra.

HISTORY AND REVIEWS:

The Dutch National Ballet; A small history

The Dutch National ballet came into being in 1961, and has been led by artistic

director Ted Brandsen since 2003. The company has huge internationalorientation, and is with more than 80 dancers the biggest company in theNetherlands. Since 1986 The Dutch National Ballet has been housed in

Amsterdam, in the Amsterdam Music Theatre (Het Muziektheater) , which is oneof the largest theatres in Europe, and also high in the list of the best theatres. The company gives over 70 performances in Amsterdam, and at least 25 in othercities in the Netherlands, but also in foreign countries.

Reviews and comments.

Former artistic director and choreographer of the Bolshoi Ballet, AlexeiRatmansky: “This ballet let dancers show off their best qualities. The first time Ibreathlessly watched the ballet. The ballet has the best popularity in Russia, andmaybe that is because it’s so cold over there. This ballet has so much

temperament and is so “heated” it sparkles of the stage like fire. ”

De Telegraaf: “Everytime again it is a mile-stone if Dutch National Ballet adds aclassical- romantic piece to its repertoire. At the premier the audience howled of enthusiasm. It seems like Amsterdam has another hit performance. Don Quichotis an extremely pleasant show, a show-case of exciting and passionate dance. ”

www.cultuurbewust.nl:  “Although Don Quichot with his little bit annoying

performance sometimes distract from the dancing, the clumsy Sancho Panza andthe severe passion between Kitri and Basilio compensate this perfectly.”

Noordhollands Dagblad about Matthew Golding in DQ: “Golding is a phenomenaldancer. The way he accomplishes his turns and jumps are a feast for the eye. Addhis overwhelming charisma and it makes the perfect favorite. ” For his role inDon Quichot Matthew Golding was nominated for The Swan for most impressivedance performance.

VSCD about Anna Tsygankova in DQ: “ According to the judges at the VSCDprize giving the Siberian Tsygankova spreads the Spanish heat and excitementas Kitri in Alexei Ratmansky’s Don Q. She is a ballerina, one who can lead a

performance. Because of her exquisite technique she dances full and free, something that was also seen in George Balanchine’s Serenade.” For her role in Don Quichot Anna Tsygankova was nominated for The Swan formost impressive dance performance

Neither of them won the price, it was given to Jurgita Dronina for her

performance as Aurora in the Sleeping Beauty, which was stunning as well.
