Dear Parents,

I can’t tell you how lovely it is to hear children in school. They have been using our newly refurbished pond and

from my office I can hear squeals of excitement as they find something…frogs, newts and much more! The new

pond area looks amazing (some photo’s are on this weeks front cover) and will become the Forest School Area in

September. Very exciting!

On Wednesday Year 1 had a Dance session in the playground. I had my window open and loved hearing the music

and laughter coming from the playground.

In the English language, we use the word 'Love' in a variety of ways: 'I love you', 'I love ice cream', 'I love

swimming’ - and the list continues. But the word 'Love' means different things on each occasion, and especially if

different people are involved in the 'I love you' phrase.

We also have the word 'Loss' - but unlike 'Love', it means the same thing in whatever context it is used. The

Cambridge Dictionary defines loss as 'The fact you no longer have something; a disadvantage caused by something being taken

away'. While it might technically mean the same thing in different contexts, the impact and effect can be very different in

each context however.

How many endings can you put with Loss of....................?

Here are a few starters: loss of innocence, loss of faith, loss of credibility, loss of sight.

How many beginnings can you put with .............. Loss?

Again, some examples: financial loss, weight loss, hair loss.

How many words can you add to Lost ..........?

Three to get you going: Lost cause, Lost property, Lost in translation.

During the pandemic, many of us have and will continue to experience a range of 'Losses' - be that employment;

financial security; holidays or special occasions; time with loved ones; trust in authority; I'm sure you relate to

having lost something.

The children have lost time in school; lost time with their friends.

There have been many many Lost Opportunities, Lost Endings and Lost Experiences for our children. For those

children in school the staff are formally and informally attending to the well-being and mental-health issues that

emanate from such losses.

We know come September that we will be working on a “Recovery Curriculum' which will indeed focus on loss in

terms of learning, socialisation, wellbeing and mental health..

This loss was the reason that where possible staff will remain with their current class.

Current Year R children are in bubbles with a Year R staff member and staff member they will be in September.

Current Year 1 that are in school have Miss Kent and Mrs Sibley. Miss Kent and Mrs Sibley will be going through

to Year 2 with the class.

Current Year 4 will still see Miss Jackson in September as she takes the children through into Year 5.

Current Year 5 that are in school have Miss Armstrong and Mrs Moss. Miss Armstrong and Mrs Moss will be

going through to Year 6 with the class.

Both Year 6 bubbles have staff from Year 6 in them.

Sadly those in Year 2 and Year 3 will have new staff in September and have not had the opportunity to say good

bye to their current teacher. This has been keeping me awake and causing me a great deal of sadness as a Mummy

and a Head. Every night I have Ellie asking why she can’t see her friends…why have I not opened Year 2!

I’m Head of the school I should have chosen to open Year 2 not the other classes. I am sure you can empathise

with dinner times in the Charlton household!

I will be writing to Year 2 and Year 3 parents as I do have a plan to bring these classes in for an afternoon before the

end of term to spend time with their current teacher and to also meet their new teacher.

For those who are Christian, while the Loss that is experienced, the Christian value of 'Hope' also applies. We must

continue to hold onto Hope.

• In June 1875, Scottish-born inventor Alexander Graham Bell made the first voice transmission using his new invention – the telephone. • Spanish tennis player Rafa Nadal was born on 3rd June 1986. Rafa has a famous but friendly rivalry with another outstanding tennis player: Switzerland’s Roger Federer. • In June 1995, the NASA space shuttle Atlantis docked with the Russian space station called Mir. Art FunBuild your own Stonehenge

The stones at Stonehenge were placed to line up with the rising and setting of the sun at the midsummer and

midwinter solstices (the longest and shortest days of the year). On the summer solstice, the sun rises behind the

Heel Stone, the ancient entrance to the Stone Circle, and rays of sunlight are channelled into the centre of the

monument.

Stonehenge is an amazing feat of engineering. Can you build your own Stonehenge? You could use stones, sticks

(Woodhenge), salt dough or even biscuits?

Wake and Bake! Chicken and New Potato Traybake

Ingredients

3 tbsp olive oil

500g new potatoes

140g large pitted green olives

1 lemon, quartered

8 fresh bay leaves

6 garlic cloves, unpeeled

4 large chicken thighs

To serve

bag watercress or salad leaves

Method

• Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Pour the olive oil into a large roasting tin and add the potatoes, olives,

lemon quarters, bay leaves and garlic. Toss everything together so it’s coated in oil and evenly distributed. Add

the chicken thighs, skin-side up, and season.

• Put the roasting tin in the oven and roast for 1 hr, basting with the pan juices halfway through cooking. After 1

hr, check that the potatoes are soft and the chicken is cooked through, then return to the oven for a final 15

mins to crisp the chicken skin.

• Remove the roasting tin from the oven. Press down on the roasted garlic cloves with the back of a spoon,

discard the skins, and mix the mashed garlic with the meat juices. Serve with watercress or your favourite salad

leaves on the side.

• All you need to create it are a few simple items found in your garden: a

straight stick, a handful of pebbles and something to tell the time.

• Find a sunny area to plant the stick. Look for a place that gets the sun all

day long.

• On the hour, as the sun shines down on it, the stick will cast a shadow.

Use one of your pebbles to mark the place where the shadow falls on the

ground.

• Do this every hour during daylight until your sundial is complete.

FOCKSA would like to hugely thank all families, friends and the whole community

for their amazing level of donations at this week’s Bag2School collection. There

were 2.4 tonnes of clothes, shoes, bedding which raised a fabulous figure of

£969.60!! 😊
