Because the confederates were less industrialized, they had fewer man-made

resources. In this, the North had the advantage. The South did have, however,

people who wanted to fight for what they believed in. The South did not have as

many railroads or means of transportation as the North did. The South had less

man power than the North, but more slaves.

    CONFEDERATE

    GOVERNMENT

    CONFEDERATE

    PREPARATION

The Confederates got prepared for war by getting their government

together and electing a President. They had a harder time

gathering material resources unlike the industrial North who had

weapons and an army already at hand. They put their capital in

Richmond Virginia so that the South could easily make attacks on

the North. The South elected Jefferson Davis as their president.

Jefferson appointed a general named Robert E. Lee to lead his

troops. General Lee worked with Stonewall Jackson and together

they were the perfect fighting team. The South drafted people

when people would not join the war. They were trained by the

generals but sometimes they had to head into battle with very

little discipline. They were equipped with cannons and rifles,

but they eventually got behind in technology and war technique.

    The Ones Left Behind

Life for the people left behind wasnt much better. They had to

work their husbands jobs if they were women. And mothers feared

that they would never see their son come home again. They hardly

had enough food to survive and traded goods were rare as much of

the food supply was cut off by the North. Europe, flat out refusedto trade with them and they couldnt grow enough crops on their

own. The people were tired of the war and just wanted it over with

quickly. When the North began burning their cities, the South lost

almost all of its hope of ever winning the war. People refused to

sign up to fight and had to be drafted in order to continue the

    fighting.

Women during the civil war had many jobs. They took care of the wounded and

took over their husbands jobs while they went away to war.

    African Americans

    Many of the freed African

    Americans fought in the

    civil war. They wanted

    freedom for their fellow

    slaves. Some of them,

    however, were captured

    and killed by the

    confederates because they

    were still believed to be

    property.

    THE MINORITY

    GROUPS OF THE

    CIVIL WAR

    Much of the immigratio

    decreased during the

    civil war . However,

    spies increased. There

    were many black spies

    that helped the Union

    to gather information

    about the confederates

RECONSTRUCTION AND EFFECTS OF THE CIVIL WAR

The civil war left a long

    lasting impact on the South.

They were in poverty. Many of

    them were starving and had

little to no jobs. Almost an

    entire generation had been

brutally wiped out. They had no

    food and no supplies. Their

cities were burnt to the ground

    and they were demoralized and

tired of war. They needed help

    to reconstruct the South, but

were reluctant to get it from

the north. They were mad at them

because of the tactics that they

used in the war and were also

    mad because they wanted to

    rebuild on their own. Another

    problem, was that their biggest

    export had become extremely

    cheap everywhere else. They had

nothing to trade and no goods

    that were worth selling. Their

    medicine and technology was

behind and they needed the extra

    hand in rebuilding their

    destroyed homeland.
