Battle of Bull Run
• Started on July 21,1861• Location: Bull Run is a creek in NE Virginia• Union General: General John Pope• Confederate General: Joseph E. Johnson• Casualties: nearly 2,800 for the Union and about 1,900 for the
confederacy• Significance of the battle: The first Battle of bull run was a
major wake up call to the north. Union forces were routed by Beauregard forces.
Battle of Gettysburg
• Date: the battle of Gettysburg started July 1,1863 July 3, 1863• Location: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania • General Union: George G. Meade• Confederate: Robert E. Lee• Casualties between 46,000 and 51,000• Significance of the battle: Gettysburg was an important
victory for the north first because it was such a significant defeat the north.

Appomattox Courthouse
• After the siege of Petersburg, General Lee abandoned the Confederate capital.
• He headed southwest toward North Carolina• However he was cut off by General Grant’s
troops.
The battle
• April 7th Grant sent Lee a letter requesting a surrender…?
• Lee was waiting for supply trains at the Appomattox Station.
• April 8th Union Cavalry arrived first and burned the supplies.
Surrender
• April 9th at 11:50 am, Lee sent a letter to Grant agreeing to surrender.
• Terms
Major artillery would be turned over.
Side arms, horses, and mules would remain.
No imprisonment for treason.
The End of the War
• After Appomattox, there were still minor battles as 175,000 Confederate troops remained in the field.
• The final surrender of Confederate troops occurred June 23, 1865.
