Introduction to Primary Sources
• Primary sources (documents or objects) are original materials that have not been altered.
• Primary sources were written or created during the time period under study.
• Primary sources provide first-hand testimony or direct evidence concerning a topic. – These sources are typically created by eye-witnesses or
recorders who personally experienced the events or conditions being documented.
Primary Source Examples
• ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS like diaries, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies or memoirs, and official records.
• CREATIVE WORKS like poetry, drama, novels, music, art • RELICS OR ARTIFACTS like pottery, weapons, furniture,
clothing, and even buildings.
• Examples: Civil War photography, the Constitution, Native American pottery, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
Vs. Secondary Sources• Secondary sources interpret and analyze primary sources.
They are one or more steps removed from the actual event or time period.
• Secondary sources are not evidence, but commentary on and discussion of evidence.
• Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources included in them.
• Examples: PUBLICATIONS like history textbooks, magazine articles, book reviews, other criticisms or commentaries of an original work, and encyclopedias

Graffiti Directions• Around the room, you will see an image next to each piece of paper. • Each group will have 3 matching color markers.• You should have a quiet conversation about each picture with your group
members. Then do the following:– 1. Your group must write down one educated question.
• The question should be at least one sentence!
– 2. Your group must write one well-thought out response to a previous question OR one statement about the picture.• The response or statement should be at least one sentence!
• You will have 25 minutes to walk around the room. If we have time at the end of class, we will discuss what you write on each piece of paper.
