• The Transportation Revolution made shipping
much easier.
• The North changed and grew rapidly.

• The War of 1812 caused America to become
self-sufficient
• The Revolution depended on four concepts-
– Machinery to do hand work
– Steam, coal, and other power in place of muscle
– The factory system and assembly lines

factories, as farming was more profitable

Mills, Workers’ Lives, and Family
• Textile mills were built during the Industrial
Revolution near rivers or streams.
• Rhode Island System: Workers were hired in
units of families and had individual jobs to do.
• Samuel Slater built housing and company
stores to attract families.
• The chance to work in a factory was a
welcome opportunity for money and skill.

The Lowell System
• The Lowell system relied on young,
unmarried, women
• The wages were high compared to normal
wages for women
• The Lowell system lost popularity due to a
boring life style and an economic downturn.
• Mill workers formed a workers union for
better wages.

Workers Organizations
• Tensions arose between factory heads and
workers
• Collective bargaining and strikes were the
main forms of protest
• Workers fought to change the work day from
12-hours to 10-hours.

Gibbons vs. Ogden
• Conflict arose between Thomas Gibbons and
Aaron Ogden over steamboat shipping
• Ogden won the case in a lower court. Gibbons
won in the Supreme Court
• Federal government’s authority to regulate
interstate trade was reuinforced.
• Monopolistic control over waterways ended-
waters freed up for greater trade

More Technology
• Samuel Morse perfected the telegraph in 1832
• John Deere invented the steel plow that was
more effective than the iron plow
• The mechanical reaper cut wheat faster than a
human could pick it.
• The sewing machine was perfected to be
twice as fast as before.
