Civil/Mechanical Engineering Classroom Dynamics

• C/M ENG consists of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. The program runs on a 4 block schedule. Each block is 88 minutes, and each grade meets 5 days per week. The cornerstone of our classroom dynamics is the “Brain Buffet”. It is a system that maximizes student productivity and facilitates the development of time management skills.

• The “Brain Buffet” is a menu of value-added activities that students may choose from when they complete an assignment before the rest of the class, or need a change in subject matter to maintain focus. Certain items on the “Brain Buffet” are constants. The first 15 minutes of each class is a reading session to learn from the past (i.e. READ). Students build a CAD portfolio by experimenting with new tools. The portfolios are graded at the end of each marking period (i.e. CAD DEVELOPMENT). Other value-added items move on and off of the menu on a weekly basis.

• Students may work as individuals, small groups, or teams. They are not restricted to our classroom and may work in the CAD Lab or, with permission, the Media Center and/or. On any given day all of the possible combinations of students/activities/location may be in play.

CMET Overview

The CMET program is an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge that are prerequisites for success in engineering studies and career development. The focus of the program is to use projects as platforms for lessons in the basics of engineering design, development, manufacturing, quality, project planning and management, team dynamics, and communications at various organizational levels.

The program includes an introduction to college level subject matter such as Statics, Structural Analysis, Simple Beams, Simple Columns, Thermodynamics, Kinematics, and Hydrostatics. The overall objective of the first three years is to develop the necessary engineering tools and skills to succeed in their design project of their senior year and prepare them for a career in engineering or other careers.

Class Rules

1) Students must be in their seats, working on

the initial assignment, reading or Do-Now,

when the tardy bell rings

2) Students must request permission to leave

the work area (Classroom or CAD Room) by

signing out with only one student away at a

time

3) Students are expected to do their own work

a) Individually their work must reflect their own effort

b) In groups everyone must contribute equally since everyone receives the same grade

4) Assignments are due at the beginning of the

period

a) Assignment are to be submitted in the designated folder

b) Late assignments will receive a ‘0’ for participation

5) Students can only work on the items listed

on the Brain Buffet without prior approval

5 C/ME 1 September 2015 v1

6) Cellphone and smartphone usage

a) Should be muted b) Cannot be used during class without

permission – 3 strikes before a zero is entered for P/P

c) Must be secured in your book bag, locker or left at the front of the room during exams and finals.

d) Using a cellphone during an exam or quiz results in a zero for the test.

7) Students can access the Brain Buffet after the initial lecture and assignment is complete

8) Cheating will not be tolerated a) Zero for the assignment or activity with

notification of the office

b) Zero on a quiz will not be dropped

c) Student cannot be exempt from the final

d) It will be mentioned on any recommendation letters

I have read the syllabus on the CME website and I understand the expectations placed on me for the CME class with Dr. Weinstein and the grading scheme that applies.

I also understand that I will have input on any proposed changes and these changes will not be affective until the next marking period.
