Ultrastructure Research

In Ultrastructure Research we study structures at va-rious levels of complexity, from extracellular products to organelles and organisms in order to contribute to a better understanding of function (with regard to possib-le applications in industry), ontogenetic processes and phylogenetic relationships.

Services and Equipment

The two groups of CIUS offer support and training in the following techniques:

Cell Physiology & Scientific Film

We seek to contribute to the understanding of the organi-zation and dynamics of plant cells under various physiolo-gical and ecological conditions. We apply ultraviolet and video light microscopy combined with fluorescence techniques. In addition, we describe and analyse the motility of cells and whole plants by cinemato-graphy.

Cell PhysiologyOur main research topics are:• Cytomorphology of plant cells and motility of organelles• Stress reactions of plant cells• Carnivorous plants and their ecological environment

Scientific Film Many processes in animals and plants and their cells can only be analysed in motion pictures. We use film and video techniques as a scientific tool and for dissemination of our results to the general public.

• the study of cephalopod adhesive systems, cell- carrier constructs and cuticular structures in arthropods.

• the analysis of the elemental composition of cells, tissues, organisms and abiotic materials. Especially in this subject basic and applied research merges,

• structural alterations of organelles, cells, tissues, organs and organisms in the course of develop- ment and regression,
