over one hundred and fifty spirits, ninety beers and twelve types of wine, The Old House has a staggering number of ways to enjoy alcohol. And if that doesn’t whet your appetite its thirty cocktails might. Situated in Sheffield’s trendy Dev- onshire Quarter, The Old House is a bar that’s causing something of a stir to Sheffield social scene. Rising from the ashes of its not so success- ful predecessor The Halcyon, this bar has been treated to a complete make-over, and its success is largely thanks to the efforts of bar man- ager Toby Grattidge. Toby who has worked in the bar industry for eleven years and has established several successful bars, is proud of his achievements; ‘For me what makes a good bar is hav- ing somewhere you want to be in and somewhere that has a great drinks range. I’d like to think it’s the best if not one of one of the best pubs in Sheffield.’ The bar itself is an eclectic array of chairs, mirrors and alcohol mer - chandise. Its left wall is dominated by a huge print of anti-prohibition protesters holding placards em- blazoned with ‘We Want Beer’, a fitting motif. The name befits its cosy décor, and it’s easy to feel quite at home when relaxing by the fire in a rocking chair, or gazing out the window on one of its comfy sofa’s. However, this laid back attitude is transformed on a weekend, when the old house is crammed with stu- dents and locals, all holding lavish cocktail glasses adorned with ice mounds, flaming limes and straw- berries. The superb cocktail menu caters for both the light hearted and strong willed, from a fruity mojito’s to a classic gin martini. ‘Everything we do, we try to do thoroughly and with a good range as feasibly possibly’, explains Toby, C ityspy Lifestyle S heffield B ars T he O ld H ouse who along with other members of its experienced bar staff put together this original and varied menu.
