Thank you! Orbx would like to thank you for purchasing CityScene Charleston!

The latest in our advanced CityScene products will be the wonderful city of Charleston in South Carolina. As the oldest and largest city in the state is also one of the prettiest with its fantastic array of traditional looking townhouses, historical sites and huge plantations. With over 1150km2 of coverage included, get ready for an exciting trip across one of the most cultural cities in the US.

The city of Charleston is rich in history with well-preserved architecture, which makes it a very desirable city for visitors. The number of tours, stunning sites and friendly locals has helped make the city to receive numerous awards, including “World’s Best City” in 2016.

Developed by veteran Orbx architect Allen Kriesman, CityScene Charleston is the most advanced city made yet for Prepar3D. Plenty of real-world data has been processed to recreate memorable views across the downtown area where you can witness the picturesque Rainbow row or travel around the huge number of plantations and gardens spread throughout the city. As usual with our CityScene products, there are countless points of interest to visit. Charleston is by no means an exception with the inclusion of the Pink House (the oldest stone building in the city), Charleston City Hall and numerous sports stadiums. The incredibly detailed 3D models developed immerse you into the area offering unparalleled views across the diverse city. Will you be the first to find all 41 POIs?

Once you’ve taken in the historic sights, be sure to sweep along the banks of the Ashley River or take a trip up to Daniel Island past the Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge. James Island is another favorite amongst tourists and locals offering even more historical buildings. The number of areas and possibilities with this old city offer a truly unique experience within the simulator.

As an added bonus, many of the surrounding airports have seen a facelift to give pilots the opportunity to land and explore these facilities. Charleston International Airport, included with the package, features custom models of the terminals, satellite imagery, animated people and more. Whilst it doesn't feature the same usual detail as stand-alone airport packages, it's an excellent step up from default. Also included in similar detail is Charleston Executive Airport, Mount Pleasant Airport and two other private airports (SC65 and SC06) Served by the Charleston International Airport, to the North-West of the downtown areas, you get to see incredible views whatever type of flying you enjoy doing. The ground-breaking technology, which we have been refining over the years, means the over 340,000 custom buildings are more accurate than ever and vegetation, lighting, terrain, traffic, are all fully integrated with a focus on delivering excellent performance.

Product tips Prepar3D V4.5+ is highly recommended!

This product will work best with P3D V4.5 or newer. An enhancement was made by Lockheed Martin in P3D V4.5 to improve load times dramatically for large scenery areas like CityScene with hundreds of thousands of custom objects. These improvements not only impact initial load times, but also in flight performance when loading scenery. This product will work in PD3 V3, FSX and FSX-SE. However, these simulator versions are only recommended for low speed VFR flight.

Make sure texture resolution is “Ultra – 4096 x 4096”

All Orbx CityScene products use high resolution 4096x4096 texture sheets. Using larger, shared texture sheets increases sim performance by reducing the total number of draw calls necessary to render the scenery, without sacrificing building texture clarity.

To get optimum performance from your CityScape product, you should make sure the “Texture Resolution” setting in P3DV4 is set to “Ultra – 4096 x 4096”. The default setting of 1024x1024 will cause non-POI building objects to appear blurry at close distances. Increasing the Texture Resolution setting will not have any negative impact on other 3rd party products that you may have installed.

Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 9

P3D HDR Lighting Adjustments (Washed Out Terrain)

CityScene Charleston is based on vibrant 0.5m satellite imagery. The source images have good tone, contrast and saturation. However, if you have enabled HDR lighting in P3D, the default settings may appear to add too much brightening to your terrain textures, which can wash out the lighter portions of the terrain. HDR lighting is a nice enhancement. But, you may want to lower your HDR lighting settings if your terrain appears washed out in spots. The default settings are 1.0. An example of lowering the settings is shown below. The ideal settings are a matter of personal taste. So, feel free to play around with them to find your sweet spot as changes can be made on the fly during flight.

Optional Charleston CityScene Configurations

Each CityScene product may provide additional configurations that are available through Orbx Central. The number of configurations provided will depend on the targeted sim platform and/or scenery product.

Page 10: CityScene Charleston User Guide...Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 7 Product requirements This scenery airport addon is designed to work in the following simulators: Microsoft

Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 10

Improving Frame Rates CityScene products are very efficient using our proprietary technology and frame rates are generally very good even with the advanced detail. However, there are some things you can do to improve performance further within the simulator itself.

Autogen Density You can improve overall performance by reducing the Autogen density sliders in P3D and FSX. FSX

FSX does not have a separate autogen density for buildings and vegetation. One slider will control both.

Page 11: CityScene Charleston User Guide...Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 7 Product requirements This scenery airport addon is designed to work in the following simulators: Microsoft

Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 11

PD3 v3

P3D v3 has separate sliders for Autogen Vegetation and Autogen Buildings. You should reduce only the Autogen Vegetation slider.

Page 12: CityScene Charleston User Guide...Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 7 Product requirements This scenery airport addon is designed to work in the following simulators: Microsoft

Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 12

P3D v4 P3D V4 has separate sliders for Autogen Vegetation and Autogen Buildings.

Moving the slider down from “Extremely Dense to “Dense” increased frame rates by an average of about 12-15%.

Moving the slider down from “Extremely Dense to “Sparse” increased frame rates by an average of about 20%.

Page 13: CityScene Charleston User Guide...Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 7 Product requirements This scenery airport addon is designed to work in the following simulators: Microsoft

Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 13

Autogen And Scenery Draw Distance (P3D V4 only)

In P3D V4, our friends at Lockheed Martin have increased the draw distance for both autogen and terrain scenery. This allows for some terrific visuals with fewer autogen objects popping up at the last minute. But, with those increased draw distances, more terrain scenery must be loaded. This appears to not only have an impact on performance (frame rates), but also load times.

The “Autogen and scenery draw distance” slider can be used to change the current setting. In our environments, we were able to decrease overall load times by about 30% by moving this slider from “Extremely High” down to “High”.

Moving the slider also increased from frame rates by an increase of about 10%.

Vehicle Traffic

Lastly, don’t forget your Vehicle Traffic slider. Going from 0% traffic to 100% traffic can DECREASE frame rates by about 40% (in our test systems).

Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 14

CityScene Building Model Details Most terrain scenery products consist of a handful of very detailed POI buildings (Points Of Interest) along with generic autogen buildings filling in the rest of the scenery region. CityScene products are unique in that the level of building detail is raised across the entire scenery area using proprietary technology. This added detail is done in a very efficient manner that still allows for terrific frame rates and smooth performance. In the past, when talking about “POIs”, developers and users were talking about very detailed buildings that were created using commercial 3D modeling packages. Each one of these POI’s can take hours, days or even weeks to develop. Extremely detailed POI’s also can reduce performance if too many of them are provided. Detailed POI’s are most often used in airport scenery products, where the aircraft (point of view) is close to the buildings and either not moving or moving very slowly. For CityScene products, POI’s are also important. However, the POI’s are only seen as the aircraft is moving at a much higher speed. So, the goal of CityScene developers is to make the object look as realistic as possible, without sacrificing performance too much. Small building details are not as important, as you won’t seem them while flying. For CityScene products, we use the term POI a bit differently, because there are different levels of POI building details. In fact, we have broken down all building models into 4 categories:

• POI Level 0 - Autogen buildings • POI Level 1 - Automated, extruded building footprints • POI Level 2 - Custom buildings created from complex building footprint structures • POI Level 3 – Detailed buildings constructed with commercial 3D modeling package

Each level of POI provides different characteristics that are important

• Positional Accuracy – How accurate is the building location ? • Size/Shape Accuracy – How accurate is the building shape ? • Texture Accuracy – Accuracy of the building texture • Building Details – How many details are in the building model? • Performance – How much drain does the model put on the system. • Object Draw Distance – How far in the distance does the object appear ?

The following charge compares the different POI levels that we are discussing. You should note that Autogen buildings (POI Level 0) are generally not used in our CityScene products.

POI Level Examples

POI Level 0 – Autogen Autogen objects are very efficient, but low detailed objects that only popup within a fairly close range. The object textures are regionally appropriate, but are randomly chosen by the simulator. Autogen objects are typically not used in CityScene products. Autogen House And Building Example

Page 16: CityScene Charleston User Guide...Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 7 Product requirements This scenery airport addon is designed to work in the following simulators: Microsoft

Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 16

POI Level 1 POI Level 1 CityScene buildings are created from extruded building footprints, in a semi-automated fashion. Because the building footprints can represent an actual building foundation, the building shapes are generally an accurate representation of the real thing. The wall textures for these buildings are generic, but regionally appropriate. The roof texture colors in most cases represent the actual roof colors as our software chooses the closest available roof texture to the roof in the satellite imagery. POI Level 1 Building Example

Most buildings (sometimes 100,000+) in CityScene products are of this type. POI Level 2 POI Level 1 and POI Level 2 CityScene objects are very efficiently rendered due to object clustering and shared textures. POI Level 2 objects are more detailed because they are semi-automated, with some manual touches added. These objects also have a far draw distance and will typically appear on the distant horizon due to their larger size. While the textures are not the actual building textures in real life, the actual texture used is carefully selected from the nearly 100 shared building textures that are unique to a regional CityScene product. The end result is still a very accurate version of the building, without sacrificing performance. CityScene products typically contain hundreds of these types of objects. POI Level 2 Building Examples

Page 17: CityScene Charleston User Guide...Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 7 Product requirements This scenery airport addon is designed to work in the following simulators: Microsoft

Orbx CityScene Charleston User Guide 17

POI Level 3 POI Level 3 objects are very detailed objects that are hand-created with a 3D object editor. These objects have textures that are unique to that object only. Sometimes these objects have a high polygon count. Because of the high polygon count and unique textures, detailed objects are typically not very efficient and can use up a lot of the simulator resources if too many of these objects are used. Detailed POI Level 3 models are most often used in detailed airport scenery packages, where they are viewed at close up on the ground. Since CityScene objects are typically only seen from the air, these detailed objects are usually kept to a minimum and only used for very important points of interest.
