The honor is voted on by coaches in the re- gion; the Paducah Sun and Pepsi are corporate sponsors. (BCS photos) Ballard County Elemen- tary School held its annual science fair on March 6, with students from every grade participating. The overall pri- mary grades (kindergarten-2) winner was first-grader Kylie Cooper. The overall interme- diate grades winners (3-5) were (tie) third-grader Lydia Bowles and the team of fourth-grade team of Reed Lee and Brady Cox. For the first year, overall winners re- ceived trophies. All partici- pants received a ribbon. Students like Lindsey Webb’s kindergarten class shown here were allowed to tour the ex- hibits. (BCES photo) BCES holds annual science fair Two Bombers selected for All-Purchase teams Two Ballard County Career and Technical students placed first in their respective contests at West Kentucky Community and Technical College on Feb. 24. Devan Walters took first place in auto refinishing and Cameron Peck took first in auto body repair. Both students are eligible to compete at the state level in April. Two students in Ballard County Career and Technical Center’s carpentry class placed in the top five at regional Skills USA competition, held March 2 at West Kentucky Commu- nity and Technical College. Charley Phillippe, son of Chuck and Cyndie Phillippe of Kevil, placed third in the ad- vanced carpentry contest, only one point behind the second- place finisher. Contestants had three hours to build a wall with a rough window opening, cut a common and a hip rafter, lay out and cut a stair stringer, and cope a piece of base. Phillippe finished in about 2 1/2 hours. Tracy Armer, son of Tracy N. and Tina Armer of Kevil, finished fifth in the beginners’ contest. Contestants had to build a wall with a rough door opening, including building corners, laying out sole and top plates, cutting studs to the cor- rect length, building a door header and assembling the wall. This means that these children have been utilizing the school’s Keys to Success: Respectful, Responsible and Ready. Through- out the week, the students will be rewarded by his/her teachers.
