Is your cat registered with the City of Wanneroo?

The Cat Act 2011 was passed by the West Australian Parliament in November 2011, so what does this mean for your feline friends?

From 1 November 2013, all cats over six months of age are required to be:

Registered with a local government

Sterilised (unless used for breeding by a registered breeder)

Microchipped so they can be returned to their owners if lost, stolen or straying from their owner’s property.

Whilst the Act does not come into effect until 1 November 2013, the City of Wanneroo encourages responsible cat ownership and recommends that cat owners sterilise and microchip their cats before the due date.

The cost of registration will soon be determined.

Visit the Cat Haven at www.cathaven.com.au for all your sterilisation and microchipping needs as well as events leading up to the changes in November.

The City of Wanneroo is proud to bring its residents another free first-class concert on Saturday, 9 November at Wanneroo Showgrounds, this time featuring two of Australia’s prominent artists, Lisa Mitchell and Josh Pyke.

Fresh from supporting a national tour for Neil Finn and Paul Kelly and recently releasing her debut album Bless this Mess, Lisa Mitchell is excited to be heading over with her four piece band and entertaining the residents of Wanneroo.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone... I’ve only really hung out in Perth and I have some friends in Bunbury and that’s about it, so I’m excited to see more of the countryside, you are all so lucky over there,” she said.

“My last album came out just late last year so I will be playing at least half new stuff and definitely some old goldies.

Not only is Mitchell looking forward to playing at the concert, but also to be co-headlining with Pyke.

“I grew up listening to Josh, so for me he’s a huge inspiration. He’s very much and has always been in my musical psyche so yeah, I love him, I’ve always been very inspired by his work,” she explained.

“You’d be crazy not to come down and hang out with us and have a beautiful time.”

Off the back of his recent national tour for his new album The Beginning and the End of Everything, you’ll be moved by the tunes of Josh Pyke. Known for his ability to weave intelligent lyrics with warm melodies and quirky song structures, Pyke will bring modern day story telling depth for all to enjoy.

“I really think at these sorts of events people are there to have a good time, they’re there to hear songs that they know and [I’m] there to engage with an audience as a whole. I will be playing all the stuff from my records, all the singles, things like that,” Pyke announced.

“I love Lisa Mitchell’s stuff, I’ve always thought she was super, super talented and I’ve enjoyed her most recent stuff as well so I think it’s going to be good fun.”

Pyke said he loved playing free shows because it opens up the demographic and he wants to see everyone get involved in the community spirit and come along on the day.

“It’s so nice when it’s a free gig. You can come down and see the community being together. It feels really inclusive,” he explained.

“It’s a chance for me to play to families and also all ages, kids that I often don’t get to play gigs to. It’s always a great vibe.

“Not every community gets events at this sort of level put on for them just for their enjoyment.”

Construction of EdithCowan University’s Health Centre, incorporating the Wanneroo GP Super Clinic in the Wanneroo Town Centre, is on track to be open to the public in just over a year.

The $22 million project will provide much-needed health services to the region, offering general practitioner, nursing and midwifery services to the community whilst providing teaching and research opportunities for ECU students and staff.

It will also deliver allied health services such as clinical psychology, physiotherapy, speech pathology, occupational therapy, nutrition and exercise physiology, along with Indigenous health and visiting specialist services.

ECU Vice-Chancellor Professor Kerry Cox said construction began on the Dundebar Road site on 30 January, and was progressing well.

“I am pleased to say that the project is progressing on time with a practical completion date in mid-2014,” Professor Cox said.

The internal fit-out will then take place mid-year, and the clinic is expected to be operational by October 2014.

The four level office-style Health Centre, which includes a basement car park, has an overall gross floor area of more than 4,000sqm and will provide parking for 70 cars.

Earthworks have been finalised, lift cores poured, a brick retaining wall and

the ground floor slab completed and concreting of the first floor is being finalised. The project is currently on budget as well.

“Access to healthcare is vital, especially in such a rapidly growing region,” Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said. “Once complete, the ECU Health Centre will become one of our greatest community assets, providing for our residents’ health needs

and taking pressure off Joondalup Health Campus.

“It is exciting to see the building take shape and each day we are a little closer to having a state-of-the-art health clinic in our own town centre.”

The Commonwealth Government and State Government have each contributed $5 million to the project, with ECU investing $12 million.

The draft City of Wanneroo Public Health Plan 2014-2017 identifies the health status of the community, highlights priority issues and needs and establishes the City’s strategies for the next three years regarding community health and wellbeing.

The purpose of the plan is to protect, improve and promote the health and wellbeing of the people living in our City.

Honouring our PioneersThe City of Wanneroo Pioneering family has extended to 221, with 12 new Pioneers honoured at the annual Pioneers lunch recently.

The title of Pioneer is awarded to community members who have lived in the City of Wanneroo for 50 years of their adult life, showing an outstanding commitment to Wanneroo.

Our pioneers hold the stories of Wanneroo; they have been through the changes and the developments and have some fantastic memories that will be cherished forever.

One of our new Pioneers, Constance Irene Neave, was born in England and moved to Wanneroo in 1963 with her husband Albert. Constance has a wonderful memory of first moving to the City of Wanneroo.

“The first morning I woke up in Yanchep Park I thought I was in heaven. It was so beautiful and peaceful and as I looked out over the lake from my back door it was just like a picture. We were so happy living there. Everyone was so friendly just like a happy family.”

Many of the Pioneers remember spending their Saturday nights at the Crisafulli picture theatre, the Atlantis Marine Park in Two Rocks, camping in Yanchep, working at the market gardens, on farms, for the Shire or

providing for families at home, and the vast landscapes with only one road to Lancelin.

Most importantly, all agree they wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Stage 1 works have now begun for the realignment of Brazier Road between Wilkie Avenue and Yanchep Beach Road. These include construction of a realigned roadway between Wilkie Avenue and the Yanchep Kiosk, together with associated retaining walls, earthworks and drainage. The new road will also include a dual use path, on-street parking and street lighting. In addition, a new car parking area is planned for Fishermans Hollow and a roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Brazier Road and Wilkie Avenue.

Vehicle traffic will be able to access both the Lagoon Beach and the

Yanchep Kiosk from the north to the existing car park opposite Picnic Cove, whilst vehicle traffic from the south will be diverted via Wilkie Avenue onto Yanchep Beach Road. Pedestrian access to the works area will be closed until late December 2013.

Lagoon Drive and Brazier Road, Yanchep - Traffic Treatment

Works involve a median island traffic treatment on Lagoon Drive, between St Ives Drive and Foreshore Vista and on Brazier Road, between Lagoon Drive and Compass Circle.

A roundabout is proposed for the intersection of Lagoon Drive and Brazier Road.

The median island traffic treatment works are currently scheduled between October and December 2013 however, construction of the roundabout at Lagoon Drive/Brazier Road is subject to Western Power’s timeline and is more likely to occur early in 2014.

The facility will include: play equipment, playable art components, nature play, musical play equipment and an important retention of existing mature native vegetation.

Alexander Drive/ Marangaroo Drive Intersection

The works for this State Black Spot Project include construction of left turn lanes on Marangaroo Drive on the western side approach to the intersection at Alexander Drive, and on Alexander Drive the northern side approach to the intersection at Marangaroo Drive. Works also include an upgrade to the traffic signals at Alexander Drive on the

northern side approach to the intersection at Marangaroo Drive.

Construction works are scheduled between October and December 2013.

Works on this StateBlack Spot Project are intended to help reduce congestion in the area and involve construction of two roundabout bypass lanes. These will be on the Marmion Avenue eastern carriageway turning into Hester Avenue heading east, and on the Hester Avenue southern carriageway turning into Marmion Avenue heading south.

Works are progressing well, with public utility service relocation work currently being carried out. All works are on the eastern side of Marmion Avenue with road widening of the Hester Avenue median island nearing completion and road construction on the

northern and southern bypass lanes well under way. Completion of the project is scheduled for October subject to

lowering of services by Western Power.The travelling public is requested to follow traffic management direction

and expect delays as there will be temporary lane closures to enable the works to be undertaken in a safe manner.

Development of a MasterPlan for the improvement of the Wanneroo Road Town Centre Streetscape has now been completed and endorsed by Council. The Stage 1 works include landscaping of the

Wanneroo Road median islands between Church Road and Noonan Drive.The contractor has been appointed and is finalising their program based on preparation of a Traffic Management Plan for Main Roads WA approval

and coordination of Western Power streetlighting and power assets.

Lenore Road Realignment (Stage 1)

Works recommenced in August 2013 following

receipt of advice from the Department of Environment Regulation that the report relating to the removal of asbestos fence sheeting had been validated, with completion schedule by April 2014.

This project involves the realignment of the existing Lenore Road from Ocean Reef Road at its signalised intersection with Hartman Drive, and includes construction of a new dual carriageway with street lighting, drainage and pathways. This will merge into a new single carriageway north of Kemp Street prior to connecting with the existing Lenore Road at East Road.

The Australasian Safari, oneof the toughest and most challenging motorsport events in the world, will hold its event headquarters at Wanneroo Showgrounds for the 2013 event.

The showgrounds will provide a base for the endurance motorsport event’s competitors, service crew, media, motorsport officials and event staff, before they embark on seven days and 3,500km of

off-road racing adventure through Western Australia’s Mid-West region.

More young people benefit from facilitiesOver the last eight monthsthe City’s youth team, in particular Youth Support Worker Osvaldo Bravo, have been working hard to increase the amount of young people who access services in the Girrawheen area.

This fantastic initiative has seen the number of young people visiting the youth room at the Hainsworth Centre in Girrawheen rise from 15-25 per shift to 40-80 young people at each session.

Osvaldo has visited several schools around the area - both primary and secondary - to promote the youth programs, engaging with over 500 young people by speaking at assemblies, in classrooms and running lunchtime activities.

The City has also been liaising with both the Centre for Cerebral Palsy and Inclusion WA to help make the Hainsworth youth program more inclusive for young people in the community who are living with a disability.

Currently there is one young person with a disability attending

the Hainsworth youth program every Tuesday. Since beginning they have now made friends and become more confident with communicating and their carer has noticed a significant increase in social development.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the hard work and consistency of the Youth Team has increased

numbers and created a wonderful atmosphere.

“When you step inside the youth room you see young people having a good time in a safe and happy environment. It’s something the City is extremely proud of achieving.”

“By actually engaging with young people on a personal level we are able to create activities they enjoy

and attract those who really benefit from these programs.”

50,000th VisitorThe Wanneroo Regional Museum celebrated its 50,000th visitor on Friday, 28 July - since opening its doors in September 2009.

Local resident Sybil Hopkins of Marangaroo walked through the doors as a first time visitor, whilst part of a City of Wanneroo HACC Social Support Program. Sybil has memories of a section of Wanneroo Road constructed of planks shown in the museum.

Meet the Artist Talk - James FoleyJames Foley is a children’s author and illustrator. His latest book, ‘In The Lion’, was released by Walker Books in 2012.

His debut picture book was the award winning ‘The Last Viking’. James has worked as a freelancer, creating cartoons and illustrations for publications, promotions, events and corporations.

More recently James has worked with community groups and non-government organisations, working with children with special needs and teaching students in country towns through the Rural Development Australia (Wheatbelt)

‘Sharing Stories’ comic project.

Come along and meet James in what will be a fun and insightful evening.

Daniel Connell - Face UpDaniel Connell is an Australian visual artist whose work is concerned with creating spaces for self-reflection in public.

His work attracts a broad base audience and invites dialogue with strangers. For many years he has

worked in India and Australia examining the role of the arts in creating resilient and healthy communities.

The exhibition will showcase existing original drawings of Australian faces from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Artistic Perspectives captures peacekeeping tours Perspectives showcases the art of two of Australia’s leading artists: Jon Cattapan and eX de Medici.

Each artist was commissioned by the Australian War Memorial to produce artworks in response to their tours to Timor-Leste and the Solomon Islands with our Australian Peacekeepers.

Their paintings and works on paper will be on display for the first time outside of

the Australian War Memorial.

On Sunday, 27 October at Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex, Dogs Breakfast, presented by ADVANCE, is going to be bigger and better than ever with over 30 exhibitors, a raft of entertainment, live demonstrations, free vet-checks and activities for our two and four-legged friends.

Follow the behaviour sessions and learn some tips or get a photo with your pet in a photo booth, there will also be plenty of competitions and giveaways on the day. Our friendly City of Wanneroo Rangers will also be on site doing registrations of both cats and dogs, so beat the rego deadline whilst having a fun day out.
