If you have children, be sure to consider spending your Fourth on the Plateau in the Lower Commons Park. e Lower Commons has lots of room to spread out, great food and many kids’ activities. e SAMMI Awards will be hosting the Kids Area sponsored by Rhonda Newton, DDS and Bellevue College. ere are many other activities for kids including sporting events by Skyhawks Sports Academy and balloon animals and face painting o ered by Mars Hill Church. Food is available for purchase including hot dogs, Teriyaki, elephant ears and ice cream. e Lower Commons property was purchased from the Sween family who ran a very successful poultry farm until 1965. ere is a wonderful story about the Sween family and their role in Sammamish which you can read by going to HistoryLink.org and search for “Sween poultry farm, Sammamish”. e park consists of approximately 20 acres of rolling grassland, a large wetland, native plant garden, playground with a spray park and two nearby shelters. Also housed on the property is CrossPath Counseling Center for families and youth,www.CrossPathCounseling.com. Be sure to check out the native plant garden while you are waiting for the

reworks. e city of Sammamish and the Sammamish native plant stewards will be holding volunteer events at the gardens on the 2nd ursday of the month from 10am-12pm. e Lower Commons native plant garden is managed exclusively by volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help with the regular maintenance. Although we will be maintaining (weeding) the garden, the emphasize will be on meeting new people and learning from our native plant stewards

more about invasive and native plants that thrive in Sammamish. All ages are welcome. If you are interested in volunteering please contactDawn Sanders, [email protected]; 425.295.0556.

e City of Sammamish would like to recognize Caitlin Stephensfor her volunteer work with the city. Caitlin has been volunteering since the end of her Freshman year at Skyline High School, coming in once a week helping with o ce work in the Parks Department. Caitlin graduated this June and will be moving on to the University of Washington. “It has been wonderful to watch Caitlin grow over the years. She has been coming in so much that she knows just about everything in the Parks department, especially all things volunteer,” said Dawn Sanders, Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Sammamish. “Caitlin has personally input over half of the 30,000 plus volunteer hours from city volunteer events and o ce workers. She assists with special events and the administration of the Sammamish Youth Board. Her help has been invaluable to the city. We would like to congratulate her on her graduation and wish her well at the University of Washington this fall.”
