City of London SENIORS’ SATELLITE Programs

Jan – Mar 2018 Guide Beginning the week of Jan 8, 2018

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SATELLITES

Management & Supervision: The Seniors’ Satellites were created by the City of London, and City of London staff and volunteers manage and operate the satellites operation and their programs. Various community partners may offer supplementary programming, or donate space.

Membership: Membership to EACH satellite is $9.76 + HST ($11.00) per person, per year! Additional minimal fees per class may be charged for classes with a certified instructor (see program schedules at each satellite for more information). Membership to any satellite is open to anyone aged 55 & over, living in any area of the City. Memberships can be purchased online at www.london.ca, at one of the City’s Customer Service Centres (for City services available evenings and Saturdays visit london.ca/hours), or on site at your satellite during the satellite operating day/time (see dates/time on front page of this brochure). If you’re purchasing your membership at the satellite location, we only accept cash or cheque (all cheques are to be made payable to ‘The City of London’). No pre-registration required for classes (unless otherwise noted); all classes are drop-in.

Membership includes:

Access to all programs and services at YOUR satellite location (unless otherwise noted);

Discounted rate on Spectrum programs operating at Kiwanis and Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centres and;

The ‘member rate’ for bus trips at both Kiwanis and Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centres.

Membership does not include:

Access to member programs and services at Kiwanis or Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centres, including special events, without paying a visitor fee.

Program fees at any partner program location

Access to community partner programs

Member Input: We welcome the input from all satellite members in regard to programming and special events. Members of the satellites are encouraged to complete surveys and talk to the Greeter at their satellite to voice their opinion.

Programs and Activities: The programs we offer at the satellite locations mimic the core programs available at Kiwanis and Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centres. At the suggestion and input of the members, programs are changed or enhanced. Programs build on the concept of the Dimensions of Wellness, offering programs that support the physical, emotional, social, environmental, occupational, spiritual and intellectual wellness of our members. Our satellite programs are all ‘drop-in’ in nature, and therefore it is unnecessary to stay for the duration of the programming time at your satellite location, or pre-register (unless otherwise noted). The majority of our programs are led by qualified fitness, dance and yoga instructors however some programs are also led by volunteers or volunteers assist the program instructors. The fitness and yoga instructors are certified, and ensure that proper conditioning, stretching, form, posture, warm up and cool downs are followed, in order to guard against any unnecessary strain on the body, or injury. The asterisks (*) next to class names indicate that the instructor has successfully completed ‘dementia friendliness’ training with the Alzheimer Society London Middlesex, and the plus sign (+) indicates the instructor has completed ‘sensitivity training for those with physical disabilities’ with the March of Dimes Canada. Note that all of our Greeters at each location also hold their certifications.

SPECIAL NOTE:

We’re Ensuring a Supportive Environment for Everyone: The Seniors’ Satellite staff are newly certified in ‘dementia friendliness’ through the Alzheimer Society London Middlesex. This certification course provides staff with additional knowledge and compassion to support those with Alzheimer’s and/or dementia. Each of our Greeters/front desk staff at each satellite location, and those instructors with a star (*) next to their program name, have successfully completed the training, and the plus sign (+) indicates the instructor has completed ‘sensitivity training for those with physical disabilities’ with the March of Dimes Canada. Note that the majority of our Greeters at each location also hold their certifications. Our programs remain welcoming, friendly, and accessible for all. Any caregiver/support person may attend the satellites free of charge (with the expectation that the caregiver will provide support to the member at all times).

SATELLITE MEMBERS! Are you missing your favourite Satellite program due to watching your grandchildren during March Break? We want to offer an opportunity for grandparents & their grandchildren to participate in programs (within

the same facility), however we don’t know if this is a service our satellite members are interested in! By offering a program space, run by professional child care workers, where children in grades 4 & under can listen to stories, do crafts, sing songs and more, satellite members will be able to still participate in their

favourite programs! The children’s program will be free, offered in partnership by the Ontario Early Years Centre. If this is something that interests you, please contact Tracy at 519-661-2489, ext 5769 before

March 1st. If we receive interest from our members, we will begin a pilot program in 2018. Those that pre-register will be contacted by phone or email about program details by early March.
