As the weather warms up and those long summer days are filled with backyard barbecues and pool parties, please keep these simple tips in mind:
Safe Disposal of Barbecue Coals
• Please allow coals/ashes to cool for at least 48 hours in the grill, 72 hours for extra precaution, before placing them in the trash. • Never place coals/ashes in your recycling or green waste containers.
Safe Disposal of Pool Chemicals
• Please do not dispose of pool cleaning chemicals in your trash, recycling or green waste carts. • Pool chemicals can be safely disposed of at our drop-off center, located at 925 O’Connor Street in El Cajon. Call (619) 596-5100 to schedule an appointment.

Residential collection service will be delayed one day following the above holidays. If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there will be no delay.

Stay Safe This Summer!Still spring cleaning? Let us help! City of El Cajon residents can schedule four (4) bulky item pick-ups per calendar year (up to 6 items per pick-up) at no additional charge. These items are picked up on service days and need to be placed at the curb by 6:00 a.m. in order to be retrieved. To schedule a bulky item pick-up, please contact Waste Management at 1(800) DUMPSTER or (619) 596-5100 at least 24 hours in advance of your service day.
Note: We are now able to accept TVs or computer monitors as bulky items. You may also take TVs and computer monitors to Waste Management’s Recycling Center at 925 O’Connor St. in El Cajon, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All e-waste can be safely disposed of at no charge.

Did you know City of El Cajon residents can safely dispose of paint and other household hazardous waste at our drop-off center, located at 925 O’Connor Street in El Cajon? Household hazardous waste is accepted on the second and fourth Saturday of the month, by appointment only. Please call (619) 596-5100 to schedule an appointment.
Acceptable items include used oil filters, used motor oil, paint, antifreeze, batteries*, propane tanks, pesticides, household cleaners, pool chemicals and sharps/needles*. *No appointment needed for batteries or sharps. They can be dropped off Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Just bought a new mattress? We can help you get rid of your old one for free! Mattresses can be dropped off for recycling at our location at 925 O’Connor Street in El Cajon, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This location is a participating collection site for Bye Bye Mattress. Residents can drop off up to 5 mattresses per person, per day.
