PROJECT OBJECTIVE & TIMELINEPROJECT OBJECTIVETo involve the public and stakeholdersinthedevelopmentofshortandlong-termstreetscapeconceptdesignsthatwillimprovethelook,functionandfeelof109StreetbetweentheHighLevelBridge and 61 Avenue.
The 109 Street Corridor Area RedevelopmentPlan(2013)willbeusedasthefoundationforthisproject.
The designs will address the needs of drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and transit riders who use the 109 Street areaandwillconsideropportunitiesto enhance accessibility, safety, furnishings, signage, surface treatments,publicart,lighting,publicspacesandmore.
PROJECT OUTCOMESTwostreetscapeconceptdesignoptionswillbe developed:•Shorttermoff-streetimprovements-improvementstothepublicrealmthatdonotinvolvereconstructionoftheroadway.
• Longtermroad/streetscapeimprovements-reconstructionofroadwaythatenvisionsamorepedestrianorientedstreet.

109 STREET CORRIDOR ARPIn 2013, City Council approved the 109 street Corridor area redevelopment Plan (arP). Createdinconsultationwithcommunitymembers,theplansetsoutacleardirectionforthefutureredevelopmentofthearea,andspecificallyaboutthe109streetscape.ThisARPsetsthefoundationforthestreetscape planning.
PLAN PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE“Toimprovethequalityandappearanceofdevelopmentand the streetscape on 109 Streettoachieveabetterenvironmentforpedestriansandabetterbalancebetweenallusersofthisimportanttransportationcorridor.”
ARP DEVELOPMENT CONCEPTThedevelopmentconceptconsistsoftwodistinctdistricts,eachwithanemphasisontheprincipalmixeduse/commercialandmedium-scaleresidentialusesthatdefinethoseportionsofthe109StreetCorridor.

EXISTINGROADWAY
ARTERIALIntended to carry large volumesoftrafficbetweenareas(“through”traffic)withfeweraccessopportunitiestoadjacentdevelopmentsandaredefinedbytheTransportationSystemBylaw.
COLLECTORProvide neighbourhood travel between local and arterial roads and direct access to adjacent lands. Buses generally operate on collector roads within neighbourhoods.
LOCALProvide direct access to adjacent lands and serve neighbourhood travel.

Transit Avenue – it is served by oneormorebusroutesthatprovide all day service and connectmajortripgenerators,LRTstationsandtransitcentres.
•North-south bus routes connectingtoUniversityandDowntown.
• East-west bus routes intersectingwith109St.
• Future LRT: An east-west LRT route is proposed as a corridor for future study that would intersect 109 Street and connectwiththeexistinglineat the University.
• 109 is an Arterial Road and therefore is intended to carry largevolumesoftraffic.
